World War Z
Kayley Robinson-Vaughan
World War Z is a 2013 American action horror film directed
by Marc Forster. The screenplay by Matthew Michael
Carnahan, Drew Goddard, and Damon Lindelof is from a
screen story by Carnahan and J. Michael Straczynski, based
on the title of the 2006 novel of the same name by Max
Brooks. The film stars Brad Pitt as Gerry Lane, a
former United Nations investigator who must travel the
world to find a way to stop a zombie pandemic.
Cast
• Brad Pitt as Gerry Lane, a former United Nations investigator with experience investigating in dangerous war zones.
• Mireille Enos as Karin Lane, Gerry's wife.
• Daniella Kertesz as "Segen" an Israeli soldier who accompanies Gerry during their escape from Israel.
• James Badge Dale as Captain Speke, a soldier stationed at Camp Humphreys in South Korea.
• Ludi Boeken as Jurgen Warmbrunn, the Director of Mossad; responsible for preparing Israel's pre-emptive defenses.
• Matthew Fox as a U.S. Air Force Pararescueman sent by Umutoni to rescue the Lanes in Newark.

• David Andrews as a US Naval Commander
• Peter Capaldi as a World Health Organization (WHO) doctor
• Pierfrancesco Favino as a WHO doctor

• Michiel Huisman as Ellis, a soldier stationed at Camp Humphreys in South Korea.
•
• They used fairly well known actors in World War Z but their main
highlight was having Brad Pitt as the main character as he is very well
known. His appearance would have attracted most of the audience
and a lot of the budget would have been spent on him. Brad Pitt had
even helped produce the movie. He would have done this to help
further boost his career. If they were to have used an unknown actor
as their main character they may not have had as much as an
audience as they did as having unknown actors sets an impression
that it’s a cheap movie weather they’re good actors or not.
Development• Development was very slow for the producers as they were having ‘Creative issues’ with the script. Creative issues means they
were having problems with coming up with ideas. There was arguments about a zombie movie being ‘Best Picture Material’ and it
being very similar to ‘Children of men’. Films that have won the ‘Best picture award’ are:
• 1997 - "Titanic"
• 1996 - "The English Patient"
• 1995 - "Braveheart"
• 1994 - "Forrest Gump"
• 1993 - "Schindler's List"
• 1992 - "Unforgiven"
• 1991 - "The Silence of the Lambs"
• 1990 - "Dances With Wolves”
• Which were not zombie films or anything thrilling.
• It was hoped that the production would start in 2009, but by 2009 the script was still in development and "still far from realization
so the movie production had been delayed.
• The producers then revealed they was having a script rewrite which showed they had confidence in the movie.
• After having such a big budget to be dealing with they wanted to make a best picture film and wanted the script to up to best
standard
Filming and location
• World war Z began Principle photography in July 2011 in Malta, with the first images of
production being released a few days later. Filming was scheduled to move to Glasgow, Scotland
in August with the production company looking to recruit 2,000 local extras for the shoot. At least
3,000 people showed up at a casting call in Glasgow on July 9, hoping for the opportunity to
appear in a scene set in a financial district in Philadelphia. Scenes were also shot
in Falmouth,Cornwall .Also in July 2011, game of throne actor eyles gabriel was cast as a character
named Fassbach.
• Pre-production began in 2011. filming locations would include Pinewood studios and London,
England. it was also reported that filming would begin in Malta in July 2011 and would
encompass Valletta and The Three cities. It was also reported that filming would also take place in
Glasgow, Scotland in August 2011.Glasgow would double as Philadelphia "with false shop fronts
being constructed and American cars on the roads." The city was reportedly chosen after "many
months looking for the perfect city centre location to play an important part in the film.
"Philadelphia was passed on due to "uncertainties about state tax credits for filmmakers.” Filming
was originally planned to take place in Royal tunbrige wells , England before moving to Glasgow.
As they had many options for locations shows that they had it very well thought out on how to
get the perfect scene for what they wanted. They needed the perfect setting and if they had done
it in an unrealistic location then the scene may not have had as much impact.
Budget and filming
• They had a budget of 125million USD, which was a very big budget
compared to most films as it was going to be a ‘best picture
movie’ World War Z began Principle photography in July 2011 in
Malta, with the first images of production being released a few days
later. Later in the same month, filming began in Glasgow. The location
manager for the film said Glasgow had been chosen because of its
architecture, wide roads, and grid layout. Filming was scheduled to be
in Glasgow Scotland and were looking for 2000 extras and about 3000
turned up. This shows that they were well prepared and had a lot of
flexibility for the scene.
Was it successful?
• On a budget of $125 million, but got pushed to $190 million. It made
a box office of $540 million = $350 million profit. World War Z was
initially scheduled for release by Paramount and sky dance on
December 21, 2012, but in March 2012 it was pushed back to June
21, 2013. Paramount elected to release jack reacher on the December
2012 date. The world premiere of World War Z was held at
the empire cinema in Leicester square, London on June 2, 2013. In
other territories, the film earned $5.7 million on its opening day and
$45.8 million on its opening weekend.
