1. REC and Quarantine
The director wanted to make it into a documentary style because
documentaries are now made into reality TV which is in massive
demand from audiences around the world as reality TV is a big trend
at the moment, this film also can relate for the ever immerging
zombie video games such as “Doom” as these are very popular and
they are aiming at both theses audiences, and it has just been
waiting to be used in film, the film being a horror can make it more
scary as the audience see’s exactly what the camera man see’s so the
feel like they are in the film and they can get emerged in the film.
It is coincidence that they have all come as there has been a massive
demand for reality so the creators of “REC” taped into this big market
by creating this reality film that puts you in a character in the films
shoes this makes it extra scary also they use zombie type monsters in
the film so this attracts fans of zombie films and then it relates to
popular zombie games which are in trend at the moment with call of
duty and others heading the gaming market.
I believe that they wanted to get it so quickly as they had also
bought the rights to distribute “REC” in America so they would be
running at the same time so once they had watch one they
wanted to watch the other so Screen Gems were living of the
success of REC when they released Quarantine so they managed
to double their money by running both. They also released it so
quick as again reality TV and zombie games are in trend so they
believed that a blend of both them would create a big selling film/
For your assignment, you need to consider why film production
companies produce remakes and the factors that influence those
remakes.
2. The Karate Kid
The original Karate Kid was released on June the 22nd 1984 and was
written by Robert Mark Kamen; it was directed by John G. Avildsen
and was produced by Jerry Weintraub and stars Ralph Macchio as
Daniel LaRusso and Noriyuke Morita as Keisuke Miyagi. The Budget
was 8 Million and made $90,815,558 in box office. They then remade
the Karate Kid and it was released on June 11th 2010, this movie was
directed by Harald Swart and was produced by Jerry Weintraub, Will
Smith, Jada Pinkett Smith, James Lassiter and Ken Stovitz. This movie
stars Jaden Smith and Jackie Chan.vg The Budget for this film was 40
Million and the box office earnings were 359,125,613.
The remake of the Karate Kid was influenced by many things on of
them was the trends of gaming as in resent times many of the top
selling games are fighting games so there was a market for a new
action fighting film. The original Karate Kid film had a game made for
it called Karate Kid Master the martial arts. So when they decided to
make a remake they also had the gaming industry in mind.
In this remake they have decided to include big stars into the film as they believe more
viewers would come and watch it as they have used Jaden Smith to appeal to the American
Viewers as they will know that he is the son of Will Smith. They have also decided to get
Jackie Chan in this movie as he is not just a star in the Europe and the US he is a huge star in
Asia especially in China and Japan where they can make even more money.
For The original version in 1984 and the remake in 2010 they were
both distributed by Columbia pictures this can be a good financial
factor when making the remake as this will make it allot cheaper as
they have done it before and they know exactly which audience they
are going to target and which country’s the film was successful from
the original.
They have been also been able to raise allot of money through
synergy by using DVD sales to sell both versions of the film at the
same time so once people have seen one they will want to watch the
other this is another big financial factor.
