through personal and collective insight.
A lot of those things will be for business use
As we’ve heard, there’s a massive efficiency and productivity side to IoT
Business will benefit from the IoT in a big way.
But I’m a real person.
I don’t want the Internet of Things. I want the Internet of Me. I am the root of the universe I inhabit.
I provide my own context to the things around me.
Where does this future lie?
What’s in store for the Internet of Me?
There’s two sides to the IoM
Let’s call them Eric and Ernie
Eric is the obvious face of it
The one that gets most of the attention
In your face and obvious
Eric is the IoM doing things for you
Thermostat that learns which temperatures to set when
It’s going to be great
It’s all the things that you’re doing already but
Automatic, faster, better. Easier
But then on the other side you’ve got Ernie
Ernie doesn’t get all the plaudits but the partnership doesn’t work without him
Ernie represents the IoM describing you and your interactions through your data
Ernie seems like the less interesting side but he’s the base on which the IoM will flourish
These same things that are doing Eric’s bidding can also collect information about you.
When did you come home?
What times are you in which rooms?
Ernie gives us something completely new. Knowledge that we’ve never had before
Ernie gives our things greater context
With Ernie’s info my thermostat will know whether I’ve just been out running and therefore don’t want the heating on yet
With Ernie’s info I’ll learn more about myself
Ernie makes it the IoM rather than the IoMyThings
That’s the really exciting side and so that’s what my predictions are going to focus on
So, what will the IoT mean to you in 2024
How is your life going to be different?
This is the most obvious prediction when you think about the Internet of Me
We’re already seeing a lot of this happen
Where once there was guesswork, supposition and theory
In 2024 you’ll be getting data about everything you do
The subjective will become objective
How much did you eat? Your fork can tell you.
How did you feel? Your watch can tell you.
How hard did you work out? Your tshirt can tell you.
What’s your potassium level? Maybe your pants can tell you.
Data output from your things won’t be a special feature, it will be expected. It’ll be the default.
All brought to you by the shrinking / cheapening of tech
Broadening of tech companies – like Apple creating their watch
And innovation platforms like Kickstarter which will look after the niches
What we just talked about was “Active” monitoring.
In 2024 you will understand the benefits of “Passive” monitoring
Passive monitoring goes on in the background.
It comes from all around you. The environment that you’re in
This is Data Harvesting
You harvest the data that describes your activities as you go about them
How much pollution have you experienced in the last year?
When did you see most friends?
What have you been spending money on?
You aren’t monitoring this data with specific targets in mind.
But you know that trends might fall out of the data that give you new insights and tell you something new about yourself
You can retrospectively go back over this data to spot patterns
You can see the incremental changes about yourself that you might have otherwise missed
Like when your aunt used to say how much you’d grown
Santander, Spain—are some 12,000 electronic sensors that track everything from traffic to noise to surfing conditions at local beaches.
Another change is that you have an expectation of greater access to the data from your context
Claiming access to the data from the noise sensors or your Oyster card or the pollution monitors in my environment
Data pertaining to me
From more data we will get more wisdom
Data is the raw material that is processed
there is a direct correlation between the input (data) and output (wisdom).
The more data that is created, the more knowledge and wisdom people can obtain.
Data harvesting dramatically increases the amount of data available to be processed.
But all of this data, all of these things cannot be siloed into their own stores
Bisociation is the act of bringing two things which seem unrelated together to create a new connection
Your data will be combined. It’ll be bisociated
I’ve got a picture of the tube map here because that provides a good analogy
A single line with a few stops on it is some use.
A second line with a connection to the first lets you get into a whole different part of town
The more lines and connections that are added the more powerful the system as a whole
You’ll have easier ways of dissecting your data
Bots will pull out interesting insights for you
A community around data will find connections and publish them and you’ll be alerted to new connections that are relevant to you
Your data is automatically connected and correlated to produce interesting, useful and actionable insights about your life.
If you go to bed earlier you could earn more money.
If you took a different route to work you’d be less stressed all day.
Your data will also be connected to that of other people
You’ll be able to see how you compare with other people
What do the healthiest people do? How do other people save money?
Data will augment what has always happened – people connecting through stories about their lives
You may have told a story about how it was so hot on holiday that you had to wear a big sombrero the whole time to keep the sun off
Example of story that develops in this way
Pictures or it didn’t happen
Went on holiday
FB
Photos
Data – temperature
Social media gave people a new way to connect
It took existing behaviours and made them easier
We’ve always told stories to connect with others
In the new world your data will provide rich input to the stories that you can tell about yourself
And the discussions that you have with friends.
I’m already seeing this. I log my sleep data with Sleep Cycle.
I know it’s not an accurate representation of my sleep quality but when I share that data with my friends it never fails to get a conversation going.
I’ve put FB at the centre here but it could be Instagram or LinkedIn or something completely different.
The point is that our data will give us a different social currency to trade
Another thing that social media has done for us is given us new ways to create and maintain connections
Who to friend, link in with or follow.
Our data may do this too.
You’ll be able to find the people who love fishing for pike on a Sunday and have data driven conversations about casting techniques
And my 5 prediction is
You know the value of your data
We’re starting to see this now
People are aware that they are the product
Also we’re already seeing insurance companies reward or deny based on your data – like the driving one
In 2024 we’ll see more of this – such as different rates of council tax based on how much rubbish you throw out
You’ll also be able to opt in to letting companies buy bits of your data for cash
The upshot is that we’ll see a change of model.
We will be the guardians of our own data and we will loan it to businesses when we choose for a transparent value exchange
So, that was my 5 for 2024.
But I’ve got a special, feel good, bonus prediction
Imagine if this connected and aggregated data and the insights from it became a resource for everyone, like a Wikipedia of human data. Imagine if smart brains from all over the world could interrogate this data and find out interesting and useful insights for the benefit of everybody.
The one I’m most excited about and interested in
Saturated fats
Cancer and pollution
At the very least it will enable us to be more energy efficient and environmentally friendly
Doesn’t all that sound amazing? Or perhaps it sounds scary, creepy, dangerous. Well, unless you’re going to throw your smartphone in the bin and go to live in a cabin in the forest, the data collection bit is going to happen whether you like it or not. It’s going to be done by corporations for their own benefit rather than for yours. And certainly not for humanity’s.
Who should store this data? Who should own it?. Who should profit from its insights?
All of this is why we wanted to create 1self.
We’re going to need a central place for all of our data to be stored
We’re going to need a standard protocol to accept the data from our devices and claim it from those around our environment
We’re going to need the innovators of the world to satisfy every niche from fishing to knitting
We’re going to want to be able to connect up that data and find out different things about ourselves
We’re going to want insights from our data
We’re going to want to be able to use our data to tell stories and to connect with other people
The 1self approach is to be free, open, transparent and not for profit.
The 1self mission is to unleash the value of this data to you and to our collective humanity.
There’s too much value in this combination to let the data be imprisoned behind the walls of any commercial entity.
The IoT is here and by 2024 it’ll be pervasive
Things will be everywhere. They’ll be talking to each other and they’ll be talking about you.
“thing” is so impersonal and yet the IoT is going to be really personal
There is a big bright future for the Internet of Me
I want the open and transparent and not-for-profit 1self platform to be the platform that helps us achieve this big bright future
I really hope you’ve found that interesting and thought provoking.
We’re at a very early stage with 1self.
