These two teams have faced eachother in many dramatic playoff games. According to tradition, the rivalry began in 1918, when a financially strapped Red Sox owner sold his star player, Babe Ruth, to the Yankees. Up until 2004, the Yankees had won every decisive match the two teams had played. In 2004, what Red Sox fans call "the curse of the Bambino" was broken.
