The Ethical Concepts Of The Antihero
CHAPTER 1: INTRODUCTION
Our meaning of heroes and villains are continually evolving. In their anecdotal universes, there are
superheroes that are looked upon with profound respect and thought to be essential pioneers of
society, and there are superheroes that are looked upon with wariness or even scorn. Heroes and
villains often reflect one another in their forces and capacities; with the significant contrast that the
hero is utilizing his/her energy to help other people and the scoundrel is utilizing it for narrow minded
purposes. I will take a gander at a character that is a perplexing cross breed between these two
generalizations, to be specific the Antihero.
Presently the inquiry emerges, what is an Antihero? An anti hero is a defective saint, and along these
lines, substantially more fascinating than the traditional stereotypical heroes. They can be taking a shot
along the edge of good, however with a deplorable imperfection, or a repulsive past. They can
likewise be working for the side of evil, however with concealed honourable aims, or other basic
complexities.
What is moral? Since characteristic and exact science rose and smashed our old otherworldly method
for comprehension the world, our ethical qualities are no more chose for us by a flat out God, however
something that we need to choose for ourselves. By which premises do we choose ... Show more

Now this is what makes him an Anti hero. The next point to be noted is that, Light is not the only one
who gets hold of a Death Note, but there is another person who falls in the same trap as Light, a
female, named Misa Amane, a young model, who is if anything more ruthless than Light. While Misa
has her own weaknesses, as she hopelessly falls in love with Light and calls it love at first sight and
Light as expected takes advantage of her as she traded her half life for shinigami

Native American Perspective on Indian Removal Act
In May 1830, Congress passed the Indian Removal Act which forced Native American tribes to move
west. Some Indians left swiftly, while others were forced to to leave by the United States Army. Some
were even taken away in chains. Andrew Jackson, the seventh president of the United States, strongly
reinforced this act. In the Second State of the Union Address, Jackson advocated his Indian Policy.
There was controversy as to whether the removal of the Native Americans was justified under the
administration of President Andrew Jackson. In my personal opinion, as a Native American, the
removal of the tribes was not in any way justified.
The removal of the Native Americans was an egocentric move on Jackson s part. Jackson was only

Jackson felt the removal of the Cherokees from our land was justified because the government was
paying for everything. Money can not compensate for the blood that was shed by our ancestors.
When some Indian tribes did not leave the land, federal troops came to Georgia to remove the tribes
forcibly. Cherokees resisted leaving their land until the bitter finish. Cherokees were marched by
gunpoint which was known as the infamous Trail of Tears. Many died due to the horrid conditions,
including my great grandmother. Any sensible person would have considered the consequences of
these actions. Jackson tried to make the trade seem peaceful and reasonable, but there is nothing sane
about the Trail of Tears. The consequence of a speedy removal will be important to the United States,
and to the Indians themselves (91). If Jackson really cared about our well being, like he claimed, why
would he allow the horrific Trail of Tears to persist? This exhibits Jackson s insincerity and disregard
for the inhuman conditions my ancestors had endure.
A main argument Andrew Jackson had was that the Indian Removal Act was only a continuation of a
change that was already happened, The present policy of the government is but a continuation of the
same progressive change by a milder process (93). He then continued to state how the tribes that
previously occupied the eastern states were annihilated to make room for the whites. This was a
transparent

The Legendary Lebron James
The chosen one, the hometown hero, the traitor, the king, the greatest of all time, or also known as
Lebron James has been through what most kids can t even imagine. Lebron grew up without a father

16 at the time she had Lebron, and Lebrons biological father, Anthony McClelland was an ex convict
uninterested in being a parent, and he left Gloria to raise Lebron by herself. This is why Lebron uses
his mothers maiden name and not his father s last name. Gloria had many personal problems and had
trouble keeping a steady job. Gloria tried to give Lebron a good life she just had struggles doing it.
Gloria tried to give Lebron everything she could, at a young age Lebron loved sports so she bought
him a miniature basketball hoop. Lebron James struggled at school, and at making friends because he
was embarrassed about his home life; Lebron found a way to get away from his home life with

Drug Trafficking In Mexico
Drug trafficking, as an actual problemátic around the world, has been a problem since long time ago,
and Mexico has come into notice around the world for this matter. Since approximately the 19th
century, the world has been worried because of illegal drug trafficking, but in the beginning, drugs
were not illegal and widely used throughout the world as they are today. Laws that banned the
commercialization use of drugs were approved less than 80 years ago in the mayor part of the world´s
countries, In the early 1900 s, drugs were not considered a serious issue, because the government
believed the abuse would not stop if citizens could not get drugs after they were banned, but it would
grow. Among the years, México has been gaining a bad image related with drug trafficking and ...

In 2006, last Mexican President Felipe Calderon proposed an initiative, in partnership with the United
States, wanting to combat the cartels with military force, which significantly escalated violence and
claimed thousands of lives, including civilians. Mexico s drug war has turned violent in recent years,
resulting in tens of thousands of deaths. Law enforcement attempts to put cartels out of business by
arresting key figures have led not to the demise of the drug trade, but to bloody deaths of both guilty
and innocent people, so we come to question the usefulness of this measurements. The drug trade will
mightily continue, no matter how risky or violent the the commercialization of it gets. In Afghanistan,

The Pros And Cons Of The Unity Party
The Unity Party s activities largely died down throughout 2000 and Wong acted as a virtual
independent in the Legislative Council. After their failure to break into federal parliament in 2001, the
Unity Party largely shifted its attentions to local government, running a number of candidates for local
councils in largely non white areas, primarily in suburban Sydney. It did not run any candidates in the
2004 federal election but Peter Wong continued to represent Unity in the NSW Parliament, until the
expiry of his term in March 2007. At the March 2007 NSW state election, lead Unity Upper House
candidate, Le Lam, won 1.2% of the vote , which was insufficient to gain election. Consequently,
Unity no longer holds seats in any Australian parliament.

Lawsuits involving ex members forced Hanson to repay approximately A$500,000 of public funding
won at the 1998 Queensland election amid claims that the party was fraudulently registered. The first
Annual General Meeting of the One Nation party was held in April 1999, which critic Paul Reynolds
said demonstrated that One Nation lacked organization (Rutherford 201). In October 2000, Hanson
expelled Oldfield from the party. His expulsion created even more instability in a party which was
constantly embroiled in scandal and internal strife. Oldfield engineered a split within the party,
creating One Nation NSW, in 2001. The new party took advantage of electoral party registration laws
to register itself as a political party under the One Nation name with the NSW electoral commission,
and achieved registration in April 2002. This meant that the original One Nation party was unable to
gain registration for NSW elections. Consequently, the original One Nation could only contest Federal
elections in NSW under the One Nation banner, whilst the Oldfield group could present itself as One

Organ Donation
Get him into the O.R. stat! After applying yourself to be a recipient for a donation, you will be added
to the waiting list for that organ. This can take months, if not years. Receiving an organ can be sudden
whenever an organ match has been found for you. We should reevaluate organ donation due to
someone s personal religion, inability to benefit the poor, numerous hospital visits, and potential
endangerment to their own well being. Therefore, in 2009, organ transplants became a demand
everywhere so abruptly that countless nationalities began selling their organs in return for money
(HRSA 1). Eighty one percent of commercial living donors (CLDs) in Egypt spent their Kidney

Krasnolutska also states that the Israeli eastern European organ trafficking rings extended their reach
to the United States. In July 2009, the Justice Department charged Levy Rosenbaum, an Israeli in New
York, with conspiracy of human organ trafficking. A Federal Bureau of Investigation agent caught
Rosenbaum offering a kidney for $160,000 (Budiani Saberi 37). Laws designed to prevent trafficking
are currently unsuccessful. While prosecutors in places such as Israel, Brazil, Kosovo and Ukraine
have successfully eliminated some of the organ trading gangs, they re still fighting powerful economic
forces. As long as there s a worldwide shortage of legal donors for life saving transplants, the
exploitation of the poor will only grow. Unless governments around the world enforce existing laws
on prohibiting procedures, the traffickers will continue to cultivate a growing legion of impoverished
organ sellers who end up with an immense wad of cash, says Glovin (Budiani Saberi 39 40). As a
result, suspicions of organ trades between Hong Kong and China in 1989 caused the Tiananmen
Square massacre arose. The Amnesty International noted an increase in China s submissions for the
death penalty, and reported on the use of executed prisoners organs without their consent. Dr. Ronald
D. Guttman, a McGill University professor, showed that after 1989, about ninety percent of China s
transplants came from executed prisoners. Along with Ronald Guttman was Forsythe stating that

Persuasive Essay About Ice Skating
Ice skating can be a difficult sport to learn because there are many steps to learn before you can even
think about going into a competition. To be able to start you will need a pair of professional ice skates,
ice skating nylons, a ice skating dress or clothes suited to practice in like loose sweatpants and a long
sleeves. First, you need to learn the basics of ice skating. You need to be able to balance on the ice
without holding onto the wall, falling, and wobbling side to side. In order to move on to the next step
you have to skate smoothly with ease so you will look professional to the judges. At the beginning you
will most likely fall a lot, especially if you are not used to balancing onto a pair of shoes with a thin

You two will keep doing that until you are able to do it on your own without the help of your
instructor. Before you start to make your routine, you will have to choose a song that will match
perfectly with your routine in the making. It may sound hard to pick the perfect song for a routine that
is not even made up yet, but for the first part all you have to do is find a song that you will be able to
skate and dance to. The most important rule you should remember while you are picking you song is
that the song has to be absolutely clean or else the judges will either deduct points from your score or
you will be disqualified it will most likely be the latter. Once you picked out a song give it to your
instructor to listen to and see if they approve of your choice of music. The second part is that your
instructor will either be able to make up a routine to go along with the music you had chosen or they
will tell you to choose a different song. Another option is that they can choose a song for you to skate
to. The reason why the last two options are there is because your instructor may not like the music you
had chosen since before they even listen to the music you chosen they are already figuring out what
will be put in your routine and how it will be put together. Next, you will begin practicing your routine
in parts before you

John Cook Imperialist Attitude
Cook s imperialist attitude may have very well, led to his demise. His initial behavior of beginning
trade with the Hawaiians, dismantling of sacred structures, and his strategic use of Lono was not have
directly caused his death, these interactions certainly cause the stressing of the relationship between
the Europeans and the native people as the Europeans outstayed their welcome. Trade efforts were
successful at the outset, the trading of iron goods to the Hawaiians gave the group power and strength
through the tools allowing them to match the battle efforts of the Europeans, to an extent. Scholars
claim that Cook s imperialist attitude caused his actions to be rude and insensitive to culture, as seen
in the utilization of the wood from ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Almost all depictions show European sailors in small numbers in boats with guns and countless
Hawaiians on the shore with spears. The key difference is the positioning of Cook, in some depictions
Cook appears to be holding up a hand to his crew ordering them to stop their fire and trying to flee the
island while a Hawaiian man is stabbing him in the back and in other depictions Cook is face to face
with the mob of Hawaiians, threateningly holding a gun with a dead Hawaiian man at his feet. In the
artistic depictions that show Cook as ordering his crew to stop their fire, while Cook is stabbed in the
back, the point of view that Cook was a heroic figure is brought to life. It can be assumed that the
artist was painting from the perspective that Cook was vouching for a diplomatic and peaceful way of
resolving the dispute and fairly wanted his cutter to be returned, falling victim to the unintelligent,
savage, and brutish ways of the native people. In the depiction that shows Cook with a gun, engaging
the Hawaiians face to face, with a dead (native) body at his feet, the point of view of the Hawaiians is
more clearly shown with Cook as an instigator, who took advantage of the Hawaiians in his time on
the island, and who reacted unproportionately to the theft of the cutter with the kidnapping of Kaawola
Kalei opu u. The first depiction seems unlikely

Tariffs on Imports
In simplest terms, a tariff is a tax. It adds to the cost of imported goods and is one of several trade
policies that a country can enact. Tariffs are often created to protect infant industries and developing
economies, but are also used by more advanced economies with developed industries. Here are five of
the top reasons tariffs are used: Protecting Domestic Employment The levying of tariffs is often highly
politicized. The possibility of increased competition from imported goods can threaten domestic
industries. These domestic companies may fire workers or shift production abroad to cut costs, which
means higher unemployment and a less happy electorate. The unemployment argument often shifts to
domestic industries complaining ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The 15% is a price increase on the value of the automobile, so a $10,000 vehicle now costs $11,500 to
Japanese consumers. This price increase protects domestic producers from being undercut, but also
keeps prices artificially high for Japanese car shoppers. Non tariff barriers to trade include: Licenses A
license is granted to a business by the government, and allows the business to import a certain type of
good into the country. For example, there could be a restriction on imported cheese, and licenses
would be granted to certain companies allowing them to act as importers. This creates a restriction on
competition, and increases prices faced by consumers. Import Quotas An import quota is a restriction
placed on the amount of a particular good that can be imported. This sort of barrier is often associated
with the issuance of licenses. For example, a country may place a quota on the volume of imported
citrus fruit that is allowed. Voluntary Export Restraints (VER) This type of trade barrier is voluntary in
that it is created by the exporting country rather than the importing one. A voluntary export restraint is
usually levied at the behest of the importing country, and could be accompanied by a reciprocal VER.
For example, Brazil could place a VER on the exportation of sugar to Canada, based on a request by
Canada. Canada could then place a VER on the exportation of coal to Brazil. This increases the price
of both coal and sugar, but protects the

An extremely important era in the history of America was the Colonial Settlements. During this time
Spain had most of the control of the recently founded land in America and controlled many ports
along the coast. Although Spain controlled most of the land, they were only looking for resources as
was France. The English were also in the New World but they were focused more on establishing
settlements than exploiting new resources. The English s first settlement failed at Roanoke Island. The
next settlement was the colony at Jamestown, Virginia and it became known as one of the first
permanent settlements in America, ran by John Smith. This colony was sponsored by the Virginia

On Truth And Lies In A Marginal Sense Analysis
Over 140 years ago, you published a work called On Truth and Lies in a Nonmoral Sense. In this
essay, you detailed how words should not be taken at face value, because words are just metaphors for
something more. You may be aware that in the current political climate, the phenomenon of fake news
has arisen. Many websites, newspapers and apps publish articles containing fraudulent information
with the goal of deceiving readers or causing a spectacle. The idea in your essay that deception is
necessary (because it is everywhere) is beginning to be echoed by a large part of the media.
Furthermore, in your work you articulate how words represent something bigger and that they mean
something different to every person and are a subjective matter. ... Show more content on

Also in that way, all news is fake news because it is subjective and there is no real way to verify the
true truth. This creates a cyclone of misinformation and misinterpretation that is currently engulfing
the internet. Often, the premise of fake news deters people from frequenting certain sites and make
them more careful about how they get their news. In the 21st century, people are keenly aware of the
information they take in, so far so that often pick and choose what knowledge they chose to believe.
Likewise, as explained in On Truth and Lies in a Nonmoral Sense, as people gain more knowledge
they feel like they have a superiority to others, and focus on acquiring knowledge far more than
anything else in the world. I have noticed that currently people are so invested in becoming more
intellectual that they often lead themselves down the wrong paths, towards isolation and loneliness.

Changes And Continuity Of Contemporary Bolivia
Change and Continuity in Contemporary Bolivia
Diversity of Capitalism and Economy, Emergence of Plurinational
Self Government, Patterns of Cultural Change and Continuity, and Consensual Community
Organization
The events that took place before and after Western involvement have led to modern day Bolivia and
help explain the implications for how Bolivia has changed and stayed the same under the Morales
administration, which implemented the new constitution in 2009. After the constitution was ratified,
some legislation quickly followed suit, including the electoral system, a law of autonomies, and a law
establishing the parameters of communitarian justice in indigenous areas (Crabtree and Chaplin
2013:25).
Regarding the economical standpoint, while the average income has soared, the Morales
administration has not been able to radically change the economy; rather it has followed a neo
extractivist model due to the lingering reliance on gas and other resources. Although this means a
larger role for the state, it also means that Bolivia is even more dependent on its natural resources
(Farthing and Kohl 2014:79). With so much of the country s earnings coming from natural resources,
this puts a strain on a left wing country that is trying to move away from such capitalist influences. An
example of how this distribution of money manifests is that urban problems, such as the building of
new roads and schools, are often given more attention than rural issues (Crabtree and Chaplin

Comparing The Romans And The Han Dynasty Chinese
Both the Romans and the Han Dynasty Chinese had a lot in common even though they lived
thousands of miles apart, but had many differences as well. Both civilizations lasted hundreds of years
and accumulated each a population of more than fifty to sixty million inhabitants. While the two
developed around the same time frame they spoke different languages, had different governments, and
different ways of living. Their main way of food was agriculture. Both great civilizations had
perfected the ways of trade and had built numerus roads to do so. Trade was their major source of
money and exotic products such as cotton and spices. Additionally, both of them concentrated on
territory expansion. While both these civilizations had many similarities in their economic structure
they had a few differences as well. For the Roman Empire agriculture was its primary source of their
food and wealth. The grew grains, olives, and grapes. Furthermore, out of those crops they made olive
oil and wine since that was one of their most important commodities. Most of the grain, grape, and
olive products they made were then later traded or sold to other people. On the other hand, the Roman
s had a fairly negative approach to trading, considerably in the higher classes. Since having a surplus
of crops and land was a status of wealth while manufacturing and commerce were seen as a lesser
occupation. The rich landlords had many slaves to work in their fields to harvest their crops.

My Favorite Sport In My Life
Have you ever wanted something so severely and it ripped out from underneath you? That s exactly
how I felt after finding out I could no longer continue my high school volleyball career. I was ready to

I can t think of a single reason why he would do this to me and make me miss out on my senior season
of my favorite sport. Every time I stepped on the court I gave everything I had and I did the best of my
ability. First day of school senior year, I was excited to be on the last stretch of my high school career
and I was more excited to have a volleyball scrimmage after school. We were scrimmaging the junior
varsity and it was like a normal game with referees. We were going to play best three out of five, and
we won the first set. During the game, I started in the front row and then rotated to the back row and
got to serve. I am a middle hitter and I didn t play back row unless I was serving. That is when
everything went wrong. JV hit the ball back over and we shank it off, but I could still get it back into
play if I went after it. I turn and start sprinting to the back wall trying to get to the shanked ball before
it hits the ground. Suddenly, I collide with the purple brick wall with full force and my hands are the
only part that stop me from my whole body running into it. Instantly, I feel pain in my right wrist, but

Rise Of The Counterculture
During the sixties, American people saw the rise of the counterculture. Counterculture was a group of
movements focused on achieving personal and cultural liberation, mainly embraced by the decade s
young adults. Because many Americans were members of the different movements in the
counterculture, the counterculture influenced American society as a whole. As a result of the
achievements the counterculture movements had made, the United States in the 1960s became a more
open, more tolerant, and a more freer country. In 1969, close to half a million self described
hippies, peace makers, and Aquarians made an expedition from mainly San Francisco to Woodstock in
upstate New York. The Woodstock Music and Arts Festival was called an Aquarian Exposition and
hailed as three days of peace and music, over 400,000 people attended; it was peaceful. However, life
outside of the woodstock festival was not. America seemed to be dividing as a country. The war in
Vietnam went on for roughly another 15 years. American boys were still being sent to Southeast Asia
by the newly elected President, Nixon. The increasingly unpopular war intensified a campus protest
movement. Burning draft cards and peace marches became daily fare on the evening news. And not all
of the demonstrations were peaceful. The summer after Martin Luther King was assassinated, riots
broke out in 125 cities including, Chicago, Baltimore, NYC, Kansas City, and Cincinnati. Meanwhile,
at the Democratic convention in Chicago, the anti war movement tore the Democratic Party in two.
Both critics and fans agree that Woodstock has become part of the mythology of the 1960s, even if the
actual event didn t necessarily represent the musical or political taste of most of the young Americans
adults at this time. Some say it symbolized the freedom and idealism of the 1960s. Some argue that
Woodstock represented much of everything that was wrong with the sixties: a glorification of drugs, a
loosening of sexual morality and a socially corrosive disrespect for authority.
The 60s was full of major movements. One of the most powerful counterculture movements was the
civil rights movement. In 1964, Congress passed the Civil Rights Act to end racial discrimination in
employment

Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie s novel, Purple Hibiscus, is an unconventional coming of age novel, set
in postcolonial Nigeria. Kambili, a teenage Igbo girl, lives with her brother Jaja, mother and her
wealthy, religious zealot father, who abuses the family in the name of Catholicism. Kambili sees her
life as the norm, however her paradigm completely changes when she and Jaja go to spend a week at
her Aunty Ifeoma s house; and the freedom they experience creates a staggering rift within their
family. It addresses various themes and motifs, including religion, domestic abuse, silence, and
political strife. However, one of the more underrated themes in the book is the imagery of nature; the
text is littered with vivid imagery and analogies connecting the characters with this theme. Weather is
one aspect of nature that becomes prevalent, and gives the events in the book a deeper and more subtle
meaning that goes missed by most. Adichie uses the weather as a symbolic undertone to illustrate the
emotional shift of Kambili between her life in Engu and her newfound freedom in Nsukka. Weather is
a symbol of nature that is the most blatant reflection of the Achikes lives, and yet is the most subtle in
illustrating how it evolves. The second chapter of the book opens with a normal day in the life of
Kambili: she is doing her homework when Mama comes into her room, with Kambili s uniforms in
hand, fresh off of the clothesline outside. Kambili is confused, because cleaning Kambili

The Defenders Essay
Hello and welcome to my review of Season 1 of the Defenders, the newest Netflix show from Marvel.
The first section will be spoiler free and then I ll get into spoilers at the end.
Overall, the show is very good and I think anyone who like the previous shows will like this, but if
you didn t, The Defenders won t do much to convert you, as its mainly intended for fans of the earlier
Marvel shows on Netflix.
I m not sure how many people this even applies to, but if you were wondering if The Defenders would
still be enjoyable if you haven t seen everything else, I d say you can, but it s much more rewarding
the more you ve seen. Having watched Daredevil is especially important as the plotlines and
supporting characters from that show play a ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The show starts out with a somewhat of a slow build, with not that much action in the first two
episodes. I didn t have a problem with it and there s plenty of action later, but just keep that in mind
going in.
The Defenders is only 8 episodes long, compared to the 13 episodes that Daredevil and the others got
per season. This lets the plot move along a quick pace and there really isn t any noticeable filler.
Everyone felt true to the way they had previously been portrayed and I didn t notice any glaring out of
character moments. It s really fun seeing people from different shows interact with each other, which I
ll get more into in the spoiler section.
The cast is very good with the main exception being Finn Jones as Danny Rand as I alluded to earlier.
Sigourney Weaver is great as always in her role as the villain Alexandra Reid, but the character itself
didn t really work for me that much, and we never get to see her do anything to establish herself as a
great villain. It s hard to explain fully without spoilers, so I ll get into that later. From what I
understand, Reid is not from the comics, which seems like an odd choice to do for the first season of
the team up of all Marvel s Netflix shows, given the ridiculous amount of villains Marvel has its
disposal.
The fight choreography is basically on the same level as Daredevil and huge step up from Iron Fist. A
few moments are a

personal can medicine get? In 2003, researchers obtained a complete human genome from which the

we are a step closer to treating cancer and other diseases.
Most cancer treatments engage in trial and error basis of treatment which puts so much of pain, and

1881 Russian Pogroms
The Russian Pogroms of 1881 were a series of devastating events in Eastern European Jewish history.
The 1881 pogroms immediately followed the assassination of Czar Alexander II. Due to
industrialization, the Russian government plunged into turmoil, and the masses were living
impoverished and discontented lives. The assassins were a radical group called Narodnaya Volya,
consisting entirely of Atheists, only one who was born Jewish. Anti Semitic groups claimed the Jews
were the ones who killed Czar Alexander II. Riots ensued: Jewish homes and businesses were
destroyed, and people were killed and injured. Historians debate whether the 1881 pogroms were
really just a spontaneous reaction to the assassination of Czar Alexander II, or whether they ... Show

Although the newspapers were an important ingredient in preparing for the pogroms and adding to the
anti Semitic feeling of the times, they do not support any master plan nor government approval.
Multiple articles in the Novorossisski Telegraf never call for physical violence against the Jews. They
specifically say to fight the Jewish exploitation with money, not with violence. Rumors were a way of
life in Russia and not part of a master plan by the government. In fact, Kutaisov writes when
investigating the pogroms, because of the government s faulty communication with the people, rumors
would circulate... (93 94). Aronson supports the spontaneity of the pogroms by showing how the
pogroms mostly occurred on a religious holiday or a Sunday when there was a lot of drinking and
when religious feelings were high. It s much easier for violence to break out at these times. Also, the
pogroms never occurred on any rumored dates. Aaronson further states that there was not a specific
pattern to all the pogroms. There was not as much uniformity as previously believed. The time frame
and the amount of damage differed from pogrom to pogrom. Although many of the pogroms were the
predictable three days, the three days were only because most of the time the pogrom broke out in the
afternoon, the military then arrived by the next day and only was able to stop the pogrom the
following day. Aaronson agrees that the government s inaction perpetuated the pogroms but their
inaction was not because they organized the pogroms. The government was ill equipped and couldn t
handle the large urban centered pogroms. They had only previously dealt with small peasant rural
uprisings. In

Compare and Contrast Two Short Stories
Landlady by Roald Dahl and Chemistry by Graham Swift
There are lots of great short stories out there, but in my opinion, both Chemistry by Graham Swift and
The Landlady by Roald Dahl are two of the most unique and effective stories. They share both
similarities and differences throughout. Comparing and contrasting the way the authors use their

In another way, these two stories are different because the authors have been using different

mixing both the perspective of adult and young boy s. Line My father s death was a far less remote

of writing style is that if I were to look at the same events in other character s perspective, it might be

Examine the Key Ideas Associated with Law and Punishment
Examine the key ideas associated with law and punishment Law and Punishment go hand in hand.
There are Laws, which are the system of rules which a particular country or community recognises as
regulating the actions of followers, and there are punishments, for when a member of said
country/community breaks the rules. Punishment is defined as the infliction of a penalty or to cause
pain for an offence. Most of the time it is not a choice as to whether you are part of a law following
community because almost all countries in the world have some kind of law system and often the
minute you turn the age where you are legally responsible or step off the boat, plane or train you are

laws. Kant had a similar conclusion i.e. that we should keep the laws but for a different reason. Kant
said that we should act so that you treat humanity, both in your own person and in that of another,
always as an end i.e. we should keep the laws so that we do not treat others as means to an end. His
idea of kingdom of ends states act in accordance with the maxims of a member giving universal laws
for a merely possible kingdom of ends where the kingdom of ends is a perfect community where all
members respect each other as ends in themselves. This is what we should strive to achieve, and to be
successful at this we should keep the laws of the community. Therefore we should keep the laws and
to keep the laws means that we must punish those that break the law.. Evaluate the view that
objectivity and relativism pose problems for the concept of law and punishment. Objectivity states that
there are ethical principles that are always wrong or always right and they are normally established a

Fatalism In The Lady Finger
Joint family and close association between family members is the greatest characteristics of the
Pakistani society. Sdiqa s house was a big house. Many relatives visited this house and stayed there.
Particularly in case of some ceremony or distress, many relatives came to share such occasions.
Sadiqa s friendship with Imran came out an account of his characteristic. Thus the story, The Lady
Finger presents a true picture of our society in a very convincing manner.
The story, The Lady Finger, has the characteristics of both fatalism and feminism. But the fatalism has
been dealt with loudly. In other words, the story opens with romantic of an adopted girl and proceeds
along the growth of the girl. The story writer develops the story the story taking the norms of society
into account. Certainly, human beings around girl, though unconsciously, are taking the girl. However,
the greater cause of the girl s troubles is not human beings. It is her fate.
Feminism or the subject treating the troubles of women has been covered from various angels. For

Battle Of Kosovo Essay
The Battle of Kosovo created a myth that added to Serbian nationalism in three major ways. First, it
became part of the calendar of the nation. Not only did June 28 mark the battle of Kosovo, but also the
day that the Bosnian Serb student, Gavrilo Princip, assassinated Archduke Franz Ferdinand beginning
WWI. This date was and is indispensible in Serbian culture and identity. Second, it created a claim to
Kosovo by establishing the idea that Kosovo was a key part of the medieval Serbian kingdom. By
drawing a linkage to Kosovo before the Ottoman conquest the Serbs were able to make a case that
they were the rightful inheritors of the region. Third, it drew a connection between contemporary
Serbia and the Serbs of the Middle Ages through linkages between common religion and a common
struggle against an ostensibly oppressive force (Bieber 2002: 96). The ... Show more content on

The allies thought that Serbia deserved to be rewarded. The U.S, British, and French governments all
officially recognized Serbian valor during the ward, and the Battle of Kosovo became the subject of
many sermons throughout the world as a valiant effort to defend Christianity (Vickers 1998: 97). WWI
activated, mobilized, and politicized a Serbian notion of identity that would plant the seeds for future
conflict (Harzl 2011: 56). WWI further consolidated the imagery of Serbians as victims, an imagery
that would undergird the discourse of intellectuals in the late twentieth century. Serbia staggering
amount of human loss particularly in Kosovo placed them well to argue that they needed the region to
reestablish their cultural identity. National identity does not just have positive components, but needs
negative moments and history that deprives that identity of something that is required for its full
establishment. This was the backdrop for future arguments made by the Serbian elite and intellectuals
to push for Serbian control over Kosovo (Shigeno 2004:

Recollection in Plato s Phaedo and Meno Essay
Recollection in Plato s Phaedo and Meno
As the earliest philosopher from whom we have written texts, Plato is often misrepresented as merely
reproducing Socratic rhetoric. In Meno, one of the first Platonic dialogues, Plato offers his own unique
philosophical theory, infused with his mentor s brilliant sophistry.
Amidst discussing whether or not virtue can be taught, Meno poses a difficult paradox: How can one
be virtuous, or seek virtue, when one cannot know what it is? How will you aim to search for
something you do not know at all? (Plato, Meno, 80d). From this question, Plato purposes a solution,
that knowledge must be recollected from the soul. When the soul enters the world of space and time,
Plato suggests, it carries some ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Near the end of Meno, Socrates observes:
For true opinions, so long as they stick around, are a fine thing and do all sorts of good. But they are
not willing to stick around for long. Rather, they escape from one s mind, so that they are not worth
much until one ties them down by figuring out the cause. (97e 98e)
Thus true opinion, on the other hand, is of things circumstantial and conditional, and remains only
temporarily in the soul s memory. Plato also uses the example of a journey to Larissa to illustrate this
difference; for even if one knows the route, in another lifetime the route may change, and thus is
temporary. The route to Larissa, therefore, would be an object of true opinion but not of knowledge,
and could not be recollected by another in future lifetimes.
Although these examples of differentiating knowledge and opinion strengthen Plato s theory of
recollection, the theory itself is not substantiated enough to prove the soul s immortality. Other
statements in both books prove to be hypocritical. If all humans possess innate knowledge through
recollection, this would refute Socrates frequent statement that he does not have any knowledge. Other
explanations are also lacking: if we are to believe this theory of recollected knowledge, then how did
the soul initially gain any knowledge? If opinion is

God s Grandeur By Gerald Manley Hopkins
At the beginning of the 19th Psalm, David writes, The heavens declare the glory of God; the skies
proclaim the work of his hands. Gerald Manley Hopkins seems to echo this theme in his poem, God s
Grandeur. The interesting aspects of this poem are a result of Hopkins different perspectives on nature.
In the beginning of the poem, Hopkins directs his focus on the glory of God through the lens of the
world. There is then a turning point where he diverts his attention to the problems mankind inflicts
upon creation. However, the closing of the poem involves him stepping back and reflecting upon the
eternality of God. God s Grandeur is interwoven with powerful imagery that is evoked by elaborate
double entendres that reflect the interaction between humans, nature, and the eternal grandeur of God
that surpasses Earth, which though temporary, is under constant care from God despite our actions.
The first stanza provides an interesting dynamic between creation and man. Hopkins writes, The world
is charged with grandeur of God. / It will flame out, shining from shook foil... (1 2). The first two lines
provide an interesting double entendre. When Hopkins writes, The world is charged with the grandeur
of God (1), is evokes the imagery of electricity. Thus, the shook foil mentioned in the second line
characterizes the world of having bursts of energy and light similar to when light is shone upon
metallic surfaces like foil. The other interpretation comes from

  • 2. The Ethical Concepts Of The Antihero CHAPTER 1: INTRODUCTION Our meaning of heroes and villains are continually evolving. In their anecdotal universes, there are superheroes that are looked upon with profound respect and thought to be essential pioneers of society, and there are superheroes that are looked upon with wariness or even scorn. Heroes and villains often reflect one another in their forces and capacities; with the significant contrast that the hero is utilizing his/her energy to help other people and the scoundrel is utilizing it for narrow minded purposes. I will take a gander at a character that is a perplexing cross breed between these two generalizations, to be specific the Antihero. Presently the inquiry emerges, what is an Antihero? An anti hero is a defective saint, and along these lines, substantially more fascinating than the traditional stereotypical heroes. They can be taking a shot along the edge of good, however with a deplorable imperfection, or a repulsive past. They can likewise be working for the side of evil, however with concealed honourable aims, or other basic complexities. What is moral? Since characteristic and exact science rose and smashed our old otherworldly method for comprehension the world, our ethical qualities are no more chose for us by a flat out God, however something that we need to choose for ourselves. By which premises do we choose ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Now this is what makes him an Anti hero. The next point to be noted is that, Light is not the only one who gets hold of a Death Note, but there is another person who falls in the same trap as Light, a female, named Misa Amane, a young model, who is if anything more ruthless than Light. While Misa has her own weaknesses, as she hopelessly falls in love with Light and calls it love at first sight and Light as expected takes advantage of her as she traded her half life for shinigami ... • 3. Native American Perspective on Indian Removal Act In May 1830, Congress passed the Indian Removal Act which forced Native American tribes to move west. Some Indians left swiftly, while others were forced to to leave by the United States Army. Some were even taken away in chains. Andrew Jackson, the seventh president of the United States, strongly reinforced this act. In the Second State of the Union Address, Jackson advocated his Indian Policy. There was controversy as to whether the removal of the Native Americans was justified under the administration of President Andrew Jackson. In my personal opinion, as a Native American, the removal of the tribes was not in any way justified. The removal of the Native Americans was an egocentric move on Jackson s part. Jackson was only able to ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Jackson felt the removal of the Cherokees from our land was justified because the government was paying for everything. Money can not compensate for the blood that was shed by our ancestors. When some Indian tribes did not leave the land, federal troops came to Georgia to remove the tribes forcibly. Cherokees resisted leaving their land until the bitter finish. Cherokees were marched by gunpoint which was known as the infamous Trail of Tears. Many died due to the horrid conditions, including my great grandmother. Any sensible person would have considered the consequences of these actions. Jackson tried to make the trade seem peaceful and reasonable, but there is nothing sane about the Trail of Tears. The consequence of a speedy removal will be important to the United States, and to the Indians themselves (91). If Jackson really cared about our well being, like he claimed, why would he allow the horrific Trail of Tears to persist? This exhibits Jackson s insincerity and disregard for the inhuman conditions my ancestors had endure. A main argument Andrew Jackson had was that the Indian Removal Act was only a continuation of a change that was already happened, The present policy of the government is but a continuation of the same progressive change by a milder process (93). He then continued to state how the tribes that previously occupied the eastern states were annihilated to make room for the whites. This was a transparent ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Law enforcement attempts to put cartels out of business by arresting key figures have led not to the demise of the drug trade, but to bloody deaths of both guilty and innocent people, so we come to question the usefulness of this measurements. After their failure to break into federal parliament in 2001, the Unity Party largely shifted its attentions to local government, running a number of candidates for local councils in largely non white areas, primarily in suburban Sydney. It did not run any candidates in the 2004 federal election but Peter Wong continued to represent Unity in the NSW Parliament, until the expiry of his term in March 2007. In October 2000, Hanson expelled Oldfield from the party. His expulsion created even more instability in a party which was constantly embroiled in scandal and internal strife. Oldfield engineered a split within the party, creating One Nation NSW, in 2001. The new party took advantage of electoral party registration laws to register itself as a political party under the One Nation name with the NSW electoral commission, and achieved registration in April 2002. This meant that the original One Nation party was unable to gain registration for NSW elections. Receiving an organ can be sudden whenever an organ match has been found for you. We should reevaluate organ donation due to someone s personal religion, inability to benefit the poor, numerous hospital visits, and potential endangerment to their own well being. Therefore, in 2009, organ transplants became a demand everywhere so abruptly that countless nationalities began selling their organs in return for money (HRSA 1). While prosecutors in places such as Israel, Brazil, Kosovo and Ukraine have successfully eliminated some of the organ trading gangs, they re still fighting powerful economic forces. As long as there s a worldwide shortage of legal donors for life saving transplants, the exploitation of the poor will only grow. Unless governments around the world enforce existing laws on prohibiting procedures, the traffickers will continue to cultivate a growing legion of impoverished organ sellers who end up with an immense wad of cash, says Glovin (Budiani Saberi 39 40). To be able to start you will need a pair of professional ice skates, ice skating nylons, a ice skating dress or clothes suited to practice in like loose sweatpants and a long sleeves. First, you need to learn the basics of ice skating. You need to be able to balance on the ice without holding onto the wall, falling, and wobbling side to side. In order to move on to the next step you have to skate smoothly with ease so you will look professional to the judges. Before you start to make your routine, you will have to choose a song that will match perfectly with your routine in the making. It may sound hard to pick the perfect song for a routine that is not even made up yet, but for the first part all you have to do is find a song that you will be able to skate and dance to. The most important rule you should remember while you are picking you song is that the song has to be absolutely clean or else the judges will either deduct points from your score or you will be disqualified it will most likely be the latter. Once you picked out a song give it to your instructor to listen to and see if they approve of your choice of music. The second part is that your instructor will either be able to make up a routine to go along with the music you had chosen or they will tell you to choose a different song. Another option is that they can choose a song for you to skate to. The reason why the last two options are there is because your instructor may not like the music you had chosen since before they even listen to the music you chosen they are already figuring out what will be put in your routine and how it will be put together. Almost all depictions show European sailors in small numbers in boats with guns and countless Hawaiians on the shore with spears. The key difference is the positioning of Cook, in some depictions Cook appears to be holding up a hand to his crew ordering them to stop their fire and trying to flee the island while a Hawaiian man is stabbing him in the back and in other depictions Cook is face to face with the mob of Hawaiians, threateningly holding a gun with a dead Hawaiian man at his feet. In the artistic depictions that show Cook as ordering his crew to stop their fire, while Cook is stabbed in the back, the point of view that Cook was a heroic figure is brought to life. It can be assumed that the artist was painting from the perspective that Cook was vouching for a diplomatic and peaceful way of resolving the dispute and fairly wanted his cutter to be returned, falling victim to the unintelligent, savage, and brutish ways of the native people. In the depiction that shows Cook with a gun, engaging the Hawaiians face to face, with a dead (native) body at his feet, the point of view of the Hawaiians is more clearly shown with Cook as an instigator, who took advantage of the Hawaiians in his time on the island, and who reacted unproportionately to the theft of the cutter with the kidnapping of Kaawola Kalei opu u. • 11. Tariffs on Imports In simplest terms, a tariff is a tax. It adds to the cost of imported goods and is one of several trade policies that a country can enact. Tariffs are often created to protect infant industries and developing economies, but are also used by more advanced economies with developed industries. Here are five of the top reasons tariffs are used: Protecting Domestic Employment The levying of tariffs is often highly politicized. The possibility of increased competition from imported goods can threaten domestic industries. These domestic companies may fire workers or shift production abroad to cut costs, which means higher unemployment and a less happy electorate. Non tariff barriers to trade include: Licenses A license is granted to a business by the government, and allows the business to import a certain type of good into the country. For example, there could be a restriction on imported cheese, and licenses would be granted to certain companies allowing them to act as importers. This creates a restriction on competition, and increases prices faced by consumers. Import Quotas An import quota is a restriction placed on the amount of a particular good that can be imported. This sort of barrier is often associated with the issuance of licenses. For example, a country may place a quota on the volume of imported citrus fruit that is allowed. Voluntary Export Restraints (VER) This type of trade barrier is voluntary in that it is created by the exporting country rather than the importing one. A voluntary export restraint is usually levied at the behest of the importing country, and could be accompanied by a reciprocal VER. Changes And Continuity Of Contemporary Bolivia Change and Continuity in Contemporary Bolivia Diversity of Capitalism and Economy, Emergence of Plurinational Self Government, Patterns of Cultural Change and Continuity, and Consensual Community Organization The events that took place before and after Western involvement have led to modern day Bolivia and help explain the implications for how Bolivia has changed and stayed the same under the Morales administration, which implemented the new constitution in 2009. After the constitution was ratified, some legislation quickly followed suit, including the electoral system, a law of autonomies, and a law establishing the parameters of communitarian justice in indigenous areas (Crabtree and Chaplin 2013:25). Regarding the economical standpoint, while the average income has soared, the Morales administration has not been able to radically change the economy; rather it has followed a neo extractivist model due to the lingering reliance on gas and other resources. Although this means a larger role for the state, it also means that Bolivia is even more dependent on its natural resources (Farthing and Kohl 2014:79). With so much of the country s earnings coming from natural resources, this puts a strain on a left wing country that is trying to move away from such capitalist influences. An example of how this distribution of money manifests is that urban problems, such as the building of new roads and schools, are often given more attention than rural issues (Crabtree and Chaplin ... Both civilizations lasted hundreds of years and accumulated each a population of more than fifty to sixty million inhabitants. While the two developed around the same time frame they spoke different languages, had different governments, and different ways of living. Their main way of food was agriculture. Both great civilizations had perfected the ways of trade and had built numerus roads to do so. Trade was their major source of money and exotic products such as cotton and spices. Additionally, both of them concentrated on territory expansion. While both these civilizations had many similarities in their economic structure they had a few differences as well. For the Roman Empire agriculture was its primary source of their food and wealth. The grew grains, olives, and grapes. Furthermore, out of those crops they made olive oil and wine since that was one of their most important commodities. Most of the grain, grape, and olive products they made were then later traded or sold to other people. On the other hand, the Roman s had a fairly negative approach to trading, considerably in the higher classes. • 19. Rise Of The Counterculture During the sixties, American people saw the rise of the counterculture. Counterculture was a group of movements focused on achieving personal and cultural liberation, mainly embraced by the decade s young adults. Because many Americans were members of the different movements in the counterculture, the counterculture influenced American society as a whole. As a result of the achievements the counterculture movements had made, the United States in the 1960s became a more open, more tolerant, and a more freer country. In 1969, close to half a million self described hippies, peace makers, and Aquarians made an expedition from mainly San Francisco to Woodstock in upstate New York. The Woodstock Music and Arts Festival was called an Aquarian Exposition and hailed as three days of peace and music, over 400,000 people attended; it was peaceful. However, life outside of the woodstock festival was not. America seemed to be dividing as a country. The war in Vietnam went on for roughly another 15 years. American boys were still being sent to Southeast Asia by the newly elected President, Nixon. The increasingly unpopular war intensified a campus protest movement. Burning draft cards and peace marches became daily fare on the evening news. And not all of the demonstrations were peaceful. The summer after Martin Luther King was assassinated, riots broke out in 125 cities including, Chicago, Baltimore, NYC, Kansas City, and Cincinnati. Meanwhile, at the Democratic convention in Chicago, the anti war movement tore the Democratic Party in two. Both critics and fans agree that Woodstock has become part of the mythology of the 1960s, even if the actual event didn t necessarily represent the musical or political taste of most of the young Americans adults at this time. Some say it symbolized the freedom and idealism of the 1960s. Some argue that Woodstock represented much of everything that was wrong with the sixties: a glorification of drugs, a loosening of sexual morality and a socially corrosive disrespect for authority. The 60s was full of major movements. One of the most powerful counterculture movements was the civil rights movement. • 20. Weather In Purple Hibiscus Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie s novel, Purple Hibiscus, is an unconventional coming of age novel, set in postcolonial Nigeria. Kambili, a teenage Igbo girl, lives with her brother Jaja, mother and her wealthy, religious zealot father, who abuses the family in the name of Catholicism. Kambili sees her life as the norm, however her paradigm completely changes when she and Jaja go to spend a week at her Aunty Ifeoma s house; and the freedom they experience creates a staggering rift within their family. It addresses various themes and motifs, including religion, domestic abuse, silence, and political strife. However, one of the more underrated themes in the book is the imagery of nature; the text is littered with vivid imagery and analogies connecting the characters with this theme. Weather is one aspect of nature that becomes prevalent, and gives the events in the book a deeper and more subtle meaning that goes missed by most. Adichie uses the weather as a symbolic undertone to illustrate the emotional shift of Kambili between her life in Engu and her newfound freedom in Nsukka. Weather is a symbol of nature that is the most blatant reflection of the Achikes lives, and yet is the most subtle in illustrating how it evolves. Cancer Practitioner Personal Statement For many years now, Scientists have struggled to help medical practitioners treat their patients according to their symptoms and provided customized healthcare on a personal basis. However, how personal can medicine get? In 2003, researchers obtained a complete human genome from which the sequence and map of all genes in the human body can be used as a reference. With this development we are a step closer to treating cancer and other diseases. Most cancer treatments engage in trial and error basis of treatment which puts so much of pain, and risk on the patient. I worked on a similar problem in my role as a research assistant in a project funded by the NIH XYZ Clinical Translational Research Center. It was on the use of metabonomics for the early detection of ovarian cancer. We worked on the development of various multi class modelling techniques like support vector machines, random forests, k nearest neighbours and partial least squares using RNA seq data from PQR that helped estimate accurate sensitivity, specificity, and positive predictive values of the tumour and develop predictive models for cancer. I have worked on DNA methylation, RNA expression, clinical patient data based on the Pancreatic Adenocarcinoma dataset through the cancer genome atlas (TCGA). The study ... The 1881 pogroms immediately followed the assassination of Czar Alexander II. Due to industrialization, the Russian government plunged into turmoil, and the masses were living impoverished and discontented lives. The assassins were a radical group called Narodnaya Volya, consisting entirely of Atheists, only one who was born Jewish. Anti Semitic groups claimed the Jews were the ones who killed Czar Alexander II. Riots ensued: Jewish homes and businesses were destroyed, and people were killed and injured. Although the newspapers were an important ingredient in preparing for the pogroms and adding to the anti Semitic feeling of the times, they do not support any master plan nor government approval. Multiple articles in the Novorossisski Telegraf never call for physical violence against the Jews. They specifically say to fight the Jewish exploitation with money, not with violence. Rumors were a way of life in Russia and not part of a master plan by the government. In fact, Kutaisov writes when investigating the pogroms, because of the government s faulty communication with the people, rumors would circulate... (93 94). Aronson supports the spontaneity of the pogroms by showing how the pogroms mostly occurred on a religious holiday or a Sunday when there was a lot of drinking and when religious feelings were high. It s much easier for violence to break out at these times. Also, the pogroms never occurred on any rumored dates. Aaronson further states that there was not a specific pattern to all the pogroms. There was not as much uniformity as previously believed. The time frame and the amount of damage differed from pogrom to pogrom. Although many of the pogroms were the predictable three days, the three days were only because most of the time the pogrom broke out in the afternoon, the military then arrived by the next day and only was able to stop the pogrom the following day. Aaronson agrees that the government s inaction perpetuated the pogroms but their inaction was not because they organized the pogroms. The government was ill equipped and couldn t handle the large urban centered pogroms. They had only previously dealt with small peasant rural uprisings. In ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Ansel Adams is a well known photographer and environmentalist who helped to improve photography with his techniques, and passion for the subject. • 33. Examine the Key Ideas Associated with Law and Punishment Examine the key ideas associated with law and punishment Law and Punishment go hand in hand. There are Laws, which are the system of rules which a particular country or community recognises as regulating the actions of followers, and there are punishments, for when a member of said country/community breaks the rules. Punishment is defined as the infliction of a penalty or to cause pain for an offence. Most of the time it is not a choice as to whether you are part of a law following community because almost all countries in the world have some kind of law system and often the minute you turn the age where you are legally responsible or step off the boat, plane or train you are subjected to their laws. And this is what Hobbes believes to be the basis of our desire to keep the laws set out by the state we should avoid chaos because it is not in our best interests therefore we should keep the laws. Kant had a similar conclusion i.e. that we should keep the laws but for a different reason. Kant said that we should act so that you treat humanity, both in your own person and in that of another, always as an end i.e. we should keep the laws so that we do not treat others as means to an end. His idea of kingdom of ends states act in accordance with the maxims of a member giving universal laws for a merely possible kingdom of ends where the kingdom of ends is a perfect community where all members respect each other as ends in themselves. This is what we should strive to achieve, and to be successful at this we should keep the laws of the community. Therefore we should keep the laws and to keep the laws means that we must punish those that break the law.. Evaluate the view that objectivity and relativism pose problems for the concept of law and punishment. Many relatives visited this house and stayed there. Particularly in case of some ceremony or distress, many relatives came to share such occasions. Sadiqa s friendship with Imran came out an account of his characteristic. Thus the story, The Lady Finger presents a true picture of our society in a very convincing manner. Not only did June 28 mark the battle of Kosovo, but also the day that the Bosnian Serb student, Gavrilo Princip, assassinated Archduke Franz Ferdinand beginning WWI. This date was and is indispensible in Serbian culture and identity. Second, it created a claim to Kosovo by establishing the idea that Kosovo was a key part of the medieval Serbian kingdom. By drawing a linkage to Kosovo before the Ottoman conquest the Serbs were able to make a case that they were the rightful inheritors of the region. Third, it drew a connection between contemporary Serbia and the Serbs of the Middle Ages through linkages between common religion and a common struggle against an ostensibly oppressive force (Bieber 2002: 96). WWI activated, mobilized, and politicized a Serbian notion of identity that would plant the seeds for future conflict (Harzl 2011: 56). WWI further consolidated the imagery of Serbians as victims, an imagery that would undergird the discourse of intellectuals in the late twentieth century. Serbia staggering amount of human loss particularly in Kosovo placed them well to argue that they needed the region to reestablish their cultural identity. • 36. Recollection in Plato s Phaedo and Meno Essay Recollection in Plato s Phaedo and Meno As the earliest philosopher from whom we have written texts, Plato is often misrepresented as merely reproducing Socratic rhetoric. In Meno, one of the first Platonic dialogues, Plato offers his own unique philosophical theory, infused with his mentor s brilliant sophistry. Amidst discussing whether or not virtue can be taught, Meno poses a difficult paradox: How can one be virtuous, or seek virtue, when one cannot know what it is? How will you aim to search for something you do not know at all? (Plato, Meno, 80d). From this question, Plato purposes a solution, that knowledge must be recollected from the soul. When the soul enters the world of space and time, Plato suggests, it carries some ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Near the end of Meno, Socrates observes: For true opinions, so long as they stick around, are a fine thing and do all sorts of good. But they are not willing to stick around for long. Rather, they escape from one s mind, so that they are not worth much until one ties them down by figuring out the cause. (97e 98e) Thus true opinion, on the other hand, is of things circumstantial and conditional, and remains only temporarily in the soul s memory. Plato also uses the example of a journey to Larissa to illustrate this difference; for even if one knows the route, in another lifetime the route may change, and thus is temporary. The route to Larissa, therefore, would be an object of true opinion but not of knowledge, and could not be recollected by another in future lifetimes. Although these examples of differentiating knowledge and opinion strengthen Plato s theory of recollection, the theory itself is not substantiated enough to prove the soul s immortality. Other statements in both books prove to be hypocritical. If all humans possess innate knowledge through recollection, this would refute Socrates frequent statement that he does not have any knowledge. Other explanations are also lacking: if we are to believe this theory of recollected knowledge, then how did the soul initially gain any knowledge? If opinion is ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 37. God s Grandeur By Gerald Manley Hopkins At the beginning of the 19th Psalm, David writes, The heavens declare the glory of God; the skies proclaim the work of his hands. Gerald Manley Hopkins seems to echo this theme in his poem, God s Grandeur. The interesting aspects of this poem are a result of Hopkins different perspectives on nature. In the beginning of the poem, Hopkins directs his focus on the glory of God through the lens of the world. There is then a turning point where he diverts his attention to the problems mankind inflicts upon creation. However, the closing of the poem involves him stepping back and reflecting upon the eternality of God. God s Grandeur is interwoven with powerful imagery that is evoked by elaborate double entendres that reflect the interaction between humans, nature, and the eternal grandeur of God that surpasses Earth, which though temporary, is under constant care from God despite our actions. The first stanza provides an interesting dynamic between creation and man. Hopkins writes, The world is charged with grandeur of God. / It will flame out, shining from shook foil... (1 2). The first two lines provide an interesting double entendre. When Hopkins writes, The world is charged with the grandeur of God (1), is evokes the imagery of electricity.
