4. What Is Inter-Generational Trauma?
A traumatic disruption that impairs the
normal functioning of a person.
This impairment creates a cycle of learned
behavior that effects future generations.
The effects can be felt: mentally,
emotionally, physically and spiritually
If left unhealed, these traumas can repeat
from generation to generation.

Inter-Generational Impacts?
Inter-generational impacts are
behaviors
that can result from generations of
unhealed trauma. If left unhealed,
these
behaviors can become multi-layered &
complex. They can often be seen as

7. The Union of Ontario Indians received funding through the Truth and
Reconciliation Commission of Canada to develop tools and erect a
monument to pay tribute to Anishinabek Nation members who
attended
Indian Residential School. The project is entitled "Honouring Our
Children,
Families, and Communities Affected by Indian Residential Schools".
As part
of The project, a series of five educational videos were created. In
this
video M'Chigeeng First Nation citizens Krystine Abel and her mother
Eve
Abel talk about how Eve's experience as a student at St. Joseph's
residential
school in Spanish, Ontario in the 1950's had an impact on Eve's
parenting
and Krystine's sense of identity as an Anishinaabe Kwe. Eve has
lived in
Toronto for over 40 years and has two daughters and one
granddaughter.

Assess family system
Are there residential school survivors
in their family system?
Is there inter-generational trauma?
Be careful to assess the behaviors,
while still seeing the person.

Recognizing the hope lies in breaking
the
cycles that have been created by the
inter
generational trauma. Any plan of care
should always include holistic
interventions,
which address the needs of the Body,
Mind & Spirit.

through stories, language, ceremonies,

14. Thomas R. Porter (Sakokwenionkwas-
“The One Who Wins”) has been the
founder, spokesperson and spiritual leader
of the Mohawk Community of
Kanatsiohareke (Ga na jo ha lay gay)
located in the Mohawk Valley near Fonda,
New York since 1993. He is a member of
the Bear Clan of the Mohawk Nation at
Akwesasne. (Akwesasne, also known as
the St. Regis Mohawk Reservation,
straddles the New York State/Canadian
border near Massena, New York.) He is
married to Alice Joe Porter who is Choctaw,
and has six children.
