SpiceJet was originally launched in 1993 as ModiLuft, one of India's first private airlines after deregulation. It had technical partnership with Lufthansa and started operations quickly. However, issues arose due to differences between the German and Indian partners, and ModiLuft ceased operations in 1996. In 2004, the airline was acquired and relaunched as SpiceJet under a low-cost model. It has since grown to become India's second largest budget airline.
