A port is a location on a coast containing one or more harbors where ships can dock and transfer people and cargo to and from land, optimizing access to commercial demand. Ports have facilities for cargo handling, port canals to allow ships further inland movement beyond port areas and passenger and cargo transport inland via trains and trucks. Major ports in India are under government control and handle over 75% of total traffic and cargo, while non-major ports controlled by states handle about 25% of total traffic and cargo.
