If the world of transport is to change, then policy making must change with it. This slide deck sets out a new vision for how mobility policy should be created in the UK. And we want you to be part of it.
2. The Bigger Challenge
Uncertainty
In a period of disruption for the
industry, transport planners are
increasingly being expected to
deal with uncertainty.
Uncertainty of what will happen
in the future, what its impacts
will be, what actions are needed,
and what to do.
A wider agenda
Transport is expected to be more
than the sum of its parts, and put
its users first. It is not just about
the economy or environment, but
about ensuring that users are more
closely involved, and ensuring
transport is achieving socially just
outcomes.
The new
New services, technologies, and
business models are challenging
the traditional way of planning for
the future. Policy makers not only
have to understand this new world,
but also understand the potential
impacts on their policies and plans.
3. The Practical Challenge
“I don’t have the time to
do something new.”
“I don’t have the budget
to do something
different.”
“These changes are
long term. My
politicians need
something in the next
few years.”
“We don’t know what
real people want.”
“We know what we
want to do.We just
don’t know how to.”
“How do I put the user
first?”
Based on conversations with real
policy makers
“We’ll just look to the
DfT for guidance.”
4. The Solution:
Mobility Policy Lab
We are a new organization dedicated to
helping you trial new ways of developing
strategy and delivering it.
We do this through a mixture of strategy
support, community development, and live
projects. We use a range of experts, skills,
and tools to achieve this.
We are not your typical transport
consultancy. Because being open and
collaborative does not suit that way of
working.
6. The Mobility Policy
Lab Approach
We help you to create user-centred mobility policies that are fit for
the future, and help you to test them.We help you to identify
strategies and solutions that meet user needs, are fit for the future,
and are effective.

with everyone by default.
And will be freely available
for people to use, add to,

Knowledge and good
practice should never be
kept behind closed doors.

16. Mobility Trend Deck
This trend deck identifies the major social,
economic, environmental, and technological
trends that will affect the transport sector
over the next 30 years. It is ideal for
transport planners and strategists seeking to
create the policies of the future.
Each card summarises the trend, its likely
impact on transport, its impact timescale,
and how it will impact on other trends in the
deck. It also contains a handy ‘evidence on a
side’, including references.
This trend deck is based upon 5 years of
research and analysis undertaken for clients
such as theTransport Systems Catapult, the
UK Ministry of Defence, and the European
Commission.
17. Future of Mobility
Scenario Game
The Future of Mobility Scenario Game is a
tool that will help you develop better
strategies through experiencing the future
from a variety of viewpoints.
Each player is given a role in the game, that
they must play to its conclusion. They can
compete with each other, collaborate, do
whatever to ensure the perspective of the
role they play is heard.
The intent of the game is to create better
strategy through experiencing the future
from a variety of perspectives. By doing so,
future plans can be iterated and changed.
The components of the game and the rules
are free to download and use.
