(short) presentation I gave at DIBI Conference on April 28 in Newcastle, UK. It's a bunch of "How?" and "Why?"'s on how to prepare for the next 10 years as a designer.
These are the slides of the presentation that I did at "FuffaDay 2018" (http://www.fuffaday.org) about avoiding the ten typical mistakes that a presenter typically does. I've added a slide near the end :-)
Design and development is a lifestyle choice for many of us, but that doesn't mean we don't want to get out and enjoy the other things in life. When most of your day is spent on trivial tasks rather than productive work, it's time to evaluate your process and improve it.
This talk will show you how to focus your work day, reduce time spent on the crap you don't enjoy, and help you Get Shit Done. We'll talk about the tools and resources you can use to speed up your process, how to find the right routine for you, and when to unplug and get away from your computer.
I am Bi-Polar. While some may think that is a bad thing. I am very thankful. Because during my Manic times I have found Great Success in starting successful businesses, earning my Realtor and Barber License, and receiving top sales/recruiting awards. Now you too can find that Manic Success in Reaching all your goals and dreams.

People say ‘women can’t do business’. There is a saying ‘Bengalis can’t do business’. Many left Kolkata saying ‘You can’t run a Startup in Kolkata’. Stop, stop, stop! Who cares what people say? Rather let me introduce you to a person, who has dispelled all these myths, and growing a Startup in Kolkata, inspite of being a Bengali woman. Meet Somrwita Guha, the coolest boss and young owner of Papercup.

A TOP KEYNOTE SPEAKER FOR EDUCATION AND CORPORATIONS
Tim Clue is a top motivational speaker for those in education; a speaker who can help our school teachers relax, laugh and remember the joy of why they are teachers. This acclaimed industry keynote and presenter has been used for staff days, in-service programs, professional seminars, convocations, continuing education programs, beginning of the year school kick offs and end of the year celebrations for school districts, colleges, universities and educational gatherings of all kinds.
Tim managed to carve out a comedy career on the national circuit, working with many well-known comics such as Jerry Seinfeld, Steven Wright and Larry Miller. And Tim’s standup can be heard alongside those and others on XM/Sirius Satellite Radio’s comedy channels.
In 2005, his stage play “Leaving Iowa” premiered at Jeff Daniels’ Purple Rose Theatre Company during which it received a nomination for American Theatre Critics’ award for Best New Play in the country, was soon thereafter published and is currently performed in theaters all over the U.S. and Canada.
So it turns out that comedy, improv, writing, directing and teaching are not such strange bedfellows. Tim has synthesized his calling as a thought leader in motivational speaking, reinventing conferences one funny experience at a time. As he often says, “If you want them to hear it, tell them. If you want them to remember, make them laugh.”
Tim has been privileged to speak before such notables as former President George H.W. Bush and economist Paul Krugman and continues to expand his role as a speaker and facilitator, magnifying the art of connection and extolling the virtues—and what Tim feels is the necessity—of finding Comfort in Discomfort.
Games, Interactivity and Gamification for LearningKarl Kapp
This session introduces, defines, and describes the concept of gamification, games for learning and interactivity. Kapp will dissect critical elements of games and describe how they can be applied to the design and development of interactive learning. The presentation is based on solid research including peer-reviewed results from dozens of studies that offer insights into why game-based thinking and mechanics makes for vigorous learning tools. You’ll learn how to create engaging learning using game-based thinking by matching instructional content with the right game mechanics and game thinking; how to move beyond the theoretical considerations; and three methods for designing interactive learning based on concepts from games
Solving the Case of the Disengaged LearnerKarl Kapp
Grabbing and holding the attention of learners is getting harder and harder. In fact, the average person sends or receives more than 150 text messages a day. This means your learner's attention is not always focused on the content you have designed or are delivering to them. How do you design instruction that engages and motivates the learner? How do you make learning exciting, interesting, and memorable? The answer is to use evidence-based techniques to engage and motivate. This presentation will use an audience response system and a case study to demonstrate the key elements required to make learning engaging. You will learn five techniques for creating engaging and memorable learning events all while playing a game. Don't miss this energetic and fun presentation.

A presentation at Sketching In Hardware 2007 on approaches to prototyping ideas and the ways ideas can be linked to their materialization, no matter how peculiar they may be.
Solving the Case of the Disengaged LearnerKarl Kapp
Engaging learners is a difficult task. They are constantly confronted with distractions and demands on their time. So how can we create instruction that pulls learners into the content and helps them gain the knowledge required to be successful? How do we grab and hold a learner's attention? How do we motivate them to engage with the content we are teaching? Participate in this session and engage in solving this mystery in this interactive, presentation.
Based on the bestselling book, The Gamification of Learning and Instruction, this session includes many examples of using game-elements, game-thinking, and gamification to engage and motivate learners.
And, yes, you will play a polling game in this session. Discover firsthand how research-based practices and game-thinking are used to engage learners, increase learning, and lead to performance driven results.

can try to walk you
through.
Otherwise, feel free

you might find

5. My background is
in energy, science,
engineering and tech.
Don’t get me wrong,
academia is great.
It allowed me to
ponder on all
sorts of things.
At some point,
though, when you
write-up your PhD
dissertation faster
than get a date
for its defense,
you realize
something
is wrong.
And it’s not only your
writing.
Research
My adventure in science, tech and
research revolves mainly around
all sorts of aspects of energy
systems and engineering.
Recently, however, I find myself
dwelling on a much broader range of
topics, and using more and more
visuals – in my PhD thesis about
resource consumption of economies
I got to 139 diagrams...
Also, I’ve been collaborating with
envisioning.io, who are doing a great
job visualizing emerging tech. The
most recent project I’ve been
involved in has been featured
by UN World Food Program’s
Innovation Accelerator

6. My current
hypothesis is that:
basically all
academics are in fact
frustrated writers and
suffer from “self-
abuse-by-writing”.
Apart from that, it also
dawned on me that
most life happens
outside my head, and
academic journals.
The next thing I
noticed was my
hands deep in
entrepreneursh*t, ---
ship, you know
what I mean!
Entrepreneurship
You can’t
see that in my
writing yet, right?!..
I tried and failed doing stuff
quite a few times already.
Probably the most iconic project so far
was the chocolate 3D printer we built with
two friends over 6 weeks in 2013.
Believe it or not that thing below is the first
configuration of a chocolate pump which
worked. So did the ugly duckling.

7. One quote I still
remember very well
from my teens is:
“The opposite
of play is not work. It’s
depression.”
In all honestly, I failed
to comply with it
quite a few times.
Nonetheless,
resourcefulness is still
at my core and a
healthy dose of
improv is a bliss
in-between “the
mundane”
Innovation
Tiny budget for advertising? No problem.
Make 3.5 inch posters and leave them, accidentally,
in strategic places (such as coffee tables and restrooms).
Dignified it was not, but hey, it worked!
You have no lab? Build a lab!
Another boring
panel session?
Bring in M&Ms
and tennis balls!
Yet another team-
building workshop?
How about
diagnosing your
team’s weak
points with
football
fields?
The best whiteboards are from shower
boards and tubing from catheters (yes,
shopping can get interesting, occasionally)

8. My rediscovery of
passion for design
and data is probably
related to a blog
called “sankey-
diagrams”
What else can I say?
I do like to make
colorful diagrams.
I confess!
I don’t even hide it…
Certainly not here,
under this link.
Data
I usually deal with only the
data and the quantitative
part, but recently I have
been trying to go beyond it.
as well as publishing an open access
article along with an explorable data set
For example, imaging
opportunities for using
data in retail [link],
or designing dashboards,

clean, effective
design.
It might have
something to do with
my stay on Iceland,
where I sat through
30 ppts each week,
for months.
I’m gradually
improving beyond
PowerPoint Magic,
through learning-by-
doing; primarily in
GIMP and Inkscape
(and good, old
Powerpoint ; )

10. Some say that
“everything is a remix”
Some say that “good
artists copy, great
artists steal”
I guess I simply like to
see ideas have sex.
As bad as it sounds,
sometimes nice
things do
come out.
Remixes

11. We all tell stories.
Like…
How I used to sing in
a choir as a child and
it got me a photo with
the late Pope John
Paul II
Or that I had this
grand plan to
become a forester
and get a house
for free from the
government.
Or…
Story-telling
Have you ever fallen into a PhD post-partum
depression? Well… Me neither.
.
Why, you ask? Because for some reason
people expect a sink full of dishes to clean
itself up magically over the course
of the day. That includes that bowl
of leftover porridge, consistency
of concrete.
It’s an awkward experience,
I tell you. Part of that process
involves daily struggle with
kitchen duties. They sneak up
on you, until you realize that
the world apparently believes
in dwarves and fairies.
On top of that, food is apparently cooked by the sun and
falls from the skies! But because the dwarves and fairies
are so secretive and humble, there is no one to thank...
Only The Chronicles of PanzerPorridge remain!
That is until recently.

12. … deliver
presentations
from time to time.
I am a recovering
perfectionist. I could
spend hours aligning
the slides or choosing
sans serif fonts, but
I try to remind myself
that:
It is people who solve
problems and it is
also people who
create those
problems in the
first place. Tech is
secondary.
Well, at least until
the technological
singularity.

guessed that I’m not a
robot yet, hence I do
things in spare time
too.
Noise-making

Other than that, I tend to my hidden stashes of digital goodies:
Music has always been a good
companion of mine.
Occasionally, I go beyond
headphones and indulge
in, what I call,
noise-making
Sometimes
decent,
Often

One of my super-special skills
is making strange faces while
playing volleyball
Also, I devour unhealthy amounts of graphic and
