2. Objectives
• Students create a mixed media sculpture
• Students utilize a welding technique as a primary practice.
• Welded steel can be a primary form of their sculpture or a structure
of their sculpture or installation
• Students integrate multi-materials of their choice: ex. Fabric,
ceramics, found objects, plastic, other metal objects etc…
• Students go through all required activities on the Blackboard
• The documentation of those activities are updated on their websites

4. Brainstorming
• Brainstorm themed “Contrast” listing at least 10 sets of two words
that are opposites. 5 sets must be invisible noun ex. Past and future,
artificiality and naturalness …. 5 sets must be adjectives
• Link those 5 sets that you feel most closely match.
• Write any story or experience that relates to each 5 sets of invisible
noun words. *it will be your actual theme and inspiration!
• List materials of your interest to use in this project as an opposite
material of steel
• Write a reason why it is opposite to metal and how you integrate
ideas of brainstorming and its materiality.
• Sketch out 2 designs of mixed media sculpture for each set of invisible
noun words
5. Maquette
• Maquette can be made of wire, cardboard, foamboard, or any
materials of their choice that are cheap and approachable.
• Maquette should be 5” scale but can be bigger *remember that
maquette is to visualize your design in a 3D form not actual artwork.
• Maquette clearly presents your plan and design.
• You may use actual materials (not steel but others) in your maquette.
• You may also utilize soldering or other techniques that you have
done.
6. Process
• After brainstorming and group discussion, students finalize their plan and
their design.
• Instructor will give at least two artists that relate to their project. Students
research those artists AND research artists from PowerPoint “Conceptual
Art”
• Write a draft and create a 5” scale maquette
• Intermediate Critique
• Safety Test and Demo for Welding
• Fabricate steel by April 13 *The yard will be under the construction after then
• Fabricate other materials
• Revise a statement
• Finalize a statement
• Critique
