Mitosis is the process of cell division where a cell replicates its chromosomes and segregates them into two identical nuclei to prepare for cell division. It involves several phases: prophase, prometaphase, metaphase, anaphase and telophase. During these phases the nuclear envelope breaks down, the chromosomes condense and align, then separate and move to opposite sides of the cell. Cytokinesis then divides the cytoplasmic components between the two daughter cells. Errors in mitosis can result in chromosomal mutations being passed on to some but not all cells, causing conditions like mosaicism.
