Mit Patel played cricket in high school and was the vice captain of his team. When the captain was injured, Mit had to step up as both captain and vice captain for the championship game. Although nervous at first, Mit demonstrated strong leadership and communication skills which helped lead his team to victory. This experience taught Mit the importance of leadership, commitment, and performing well under stress.

2. Back in the year of 2010 when I was in in my last year of high school, I played for my school’s cricket team. On
nice warm summer days we would go to different parks to compete with other teams from Toronto high schools.
This photo of me and my teammate was taken at a park right after we won the senior boys cricket city
champions. I was the vice captain of my cricket team and had actually taken the role of the captain since the
actual captain was injured. It was crucial for me to fill in for the captain because it was the final match and we
had to win. I had to step up my leadership skills by actively taking the role of both the captain and vice captain. I
learned that each team member has it’s own responsibilities and that if I did not fulfill mine, out team could have
been in serious trouble. However, I made sure that my leadership skills were strong enough to communicate well
with my team members because in cricket or any other sport, communication and team spirit is the key to
winning. In the beginning I was pretty nervous, however as the day went on I got more and more into my role as
the captain, and my nervousness and anxiety died down. The outcome was amazing since we actually won the
game and the city champions. This gave me pride and I was really proud of my hard work as well as the team.
This event helped me work my best in stress and because of this, I was able to handle many other stressful
situations and I overcame many barriers just to make sure I can be successful at everything I aim to do.

3. Cricket is a very important part of my life, and other than my memories, medals represent
my accomplishments. I have gotten many medals and awards to represent my role as a
team player in the sport. I have been rewarded with medals for being outstanding as a team
member for five consecutive years. Some of them were given to me for being a part of the
winning team. The award was given for my recognition as MVP for executing games in an
excellent fashion and for leadership skills. These awards are a important part of my life
because cricket is a sport that is really important to me. Even though sports and business
are two different areas, they do share many similarities, and I learned this from playing
cricket and from learning aspects of business. In both, you need leadership skills and need
to commit. If I didn’t have any leadership skills and if I didn’t commit to the sport, I would
have never achieved any of these medals. Therefore, I learned that I must set a
goal, commit to it, and become a leader in leading others or just leading myself in the right
direction to achieve it.

4. Taking a role and initiative whether it’s small or big is really important. I helped my friend
Neha (In the picture with me) at an Ontario election event in supporting an Ontario
politician by the name of Brad Duguid. I was volunteering with her in organizing the event.
For me, this was an important event because it was a new experience. I was helping people
at the event organize and assist them in anything they needed. I learned skills such as
organizational skills in how to organize events. This will come really handy in the future
when I want to hold events to brand myself or to run a business since many events fail due
to not being properly organized.

5. To make business, you need to make friends first, and my friends are a huge part of my life. I
have three best friends (shown in the picture) and we love to do everything together. One
night, we all decided to go to a business event to see what doing business actually takes. Many
people who owned businesses and companies had come to talk about the steps they had
taken to get there. Other business investors were also there and they were talking about what
young people like my friends and I could do to start our own careers in the business industry.
My best friends and I would really like to invest in a business together once we finish out
education and going to this event gave us the opportunity to learn about all the options and
opportunities out there. We wore professional attire because by dressing professionally, you
are showing people that you are serious about what you are doing I learned about the
different kinds of businesses, the different kinds of levels of management etc. I feel like this
really allowed me to keep my options open and that my best friends and I could be very
successful together and even individually if we try.

6. Every school year during spring time, my friends and I would organize a fundraiser to raise
money for children in Africa. We would rush to the school gymnasium every lunch and ask
other students to come watch and donate. In order to play for a team, students had to
donate a few dollars. My school had a lot of students that loved cricket so this was a really
good idea to raise money. I would take rotational turns with other players to play as well as to
make sure everything was running smoothly in terms of fundraising. These were important
events (shown in the pictures) because I got to enjoy playing a sport I love and I was a part of
helping raise money to help others in need. I learned to strengthen my organizational skills.
As a result, the event was indeed successful and this made me really happy. This allowed us
to continue hosting the event every year with the permission of our school teachers. Not only
did we have a lot of fun, but we also brought smiles to the faces of the children in Africa.
