Analyzing the conventions of mise-en scene.

1. Mise-en scene
Mise-en scene is the arrangement of the shot. The
positioning of the actors, scenery, and the props on the set.
The mise-en scene is affected by the style of the
movie or show being shot.
The mise-en scene effects the point or the part of
storyline that the shot is meaning to represent.

2. Setting

The main importance of the visual side of any film is the setting and
layout of the shots/scene.
The background setting of the shot is a location shot, as it shows the
train in the background as well as the actors in the foreground. The
set is also a natural exterior location because it involves mainly
natural light and is able to have shadows in the shot without it
decreasing the brightness of the shot.

3. Props
Harry
Potter
In this shot the key prop involves the wands because the wand is a
symbolic prop throughout the Harry Potter film series. The flame as a prop
is placed in the foreground the to connotate the fantasy, magical genre that
the films revolves around. The incidental props in this shot include the
props that set the scene but is not have such as importance than the key
props. Examples of the incidental props in the shot are props such as, the
bunk bed and furniture to allow the audience to interpret the story line
more.

4. Lighting and colour
The lighting in the first shot is a high
key lighting focusing on the two main
protagonists. This draws focus to the
main actors that are placed in the
foreground.
The colour of the shot as a whole
connotates danger as a purple tone is
used in the background. The purple tint
to the lightening causes a contrast
between the background colour and the
foreground colours that the actors are
dressed and shown in (the yellow light).
In the second shot of the same set
includes a natural colour and brighter
lighting, which indicates day time in the
shot instead of artificial lighting.

5. Costume hair and
make-up
 The costume, hair and make-up in the film can imply a change in the
story line or personality for the character.
In both of the shots the character shows a sense of elegance,
however it still shows two different personalities of the character.
The first shot involves simple and neutral colours in costume, hair and
make up which adds to the natural scene and lighting. Where as the
second shot includes a more stylised shot that includes more
artificial light .
The costume, hair and make up also has input on what era the movie is
trying to represent.

6. Facial expressions and
body language
 In a film the facial expressions and body language are as important as the
setting or props of the film. They indicate the characters emotions as well
as their relationships with other characters these show a reflect on the
audience watching the film.
 Body language and Facial expressions can be portrayed in different ways
by adding more conventions.

7. Positioning and space

Woman
The woman is positioned central of the shot that conotates
that she is the main protagonist of the film. Having the
woman central also reflects that the character is the stronger
person and will have a strong personality.
