Summary of GNI Orientation Held last April 12, 2013 with Dean Nina G. Gloriani
I. Attendance
Present: Kyle Patrick Eugenio
Yves Miel Zuñiga
Chris Erwin Mercado
II. Dean Nina G. Gloriani called for the GNI Orientation with some members of CPH-
SC 2013-2014 to order at 3:23 PM of April 12, 2013 in Room 407 of Lara Hall.
III. Progress and Drawbacks of GNI
Dean Gloriani started the orientation by pointing out the root of the problem – there
are forces which allow the vendors to continue their operations along the sidewalks
making it difficult to address the real situation to the authority.
She even said that the administration has already arranged preliminary processes.
She had tapped several agencies and institutions like DILG, MMDA, BFP, PNP, PWU,
DOJ, traffic bureau, barangay bureau and Supreme Court. Despite these numerous
agencies approached, nothing much happened. She added the promise of Mayor
Alfredo Lim in Thrilla in UP Manila last March 13 that he will vacate the sidewalks of
UP Manila within two weeks. A month has passed yet no development was seen.
Dean said that for the past three years, a number of clean-ups have been done yet
the same problems recur. With this matter, Dean said that it’s not a problem of
Public Health but rather a socio-politico-economic issue on a bigger picture.
IV. Plans and Insights
Dean shared her insights about the GNI clean-up:
1. The first step is giving announcement that there will be a clean-up.
2. A series of follow-ups shall be made such as calling the attention of government
leaders with respect to the problems on pedestrian lanes and road obstruction.
3. It was raised that requesting a portion between CPH and CM to have a terminal
area for the jeepney drivers instead of vendors can also be done.
4. Giving out message to the general public was also raised.
Problem: How do we educate them?
5. Putting up trash bins along sidewalks was also discussed.
Problem: security issues (same with Robinsons Corporation)
6. Issues on jaywalking and cigarette vending (which should keep a considerable
distance from schools) were also tackled.
Dean’s question: How can we help?
7. She wanted the media to come in order to speed up the progress of this project.
8. Social Transformation, a program pushed by CAS.
9. Hitting the root which is politics was the bottomline of the discussion.
V. Dean said that she wanted the students to be at the forefront with them to show
that they’re doing something for the nation. For the GNI clean-up, other GNI
members such as DOJ, SC and Robinsons Corporation did not show interest of
joining this time according to Dean. For the last part, she asked the students
present at the orientation to create witty slogans which can be posted along the
sidewalks of UP Manila.
VI. The orientation ended at 4:30 PM.
