Globally, the number of child deaths under five has decreased significantly from 12 million in 1990 to 6.9 million in 2011, however the target of a two-thirds reduction in the child mortality rate by 2015 is unlikely to be met. While progress has been made in reducing malnutrition and increasing access to healthcare, over one third of child deaths are still due to preventable causes like malnutrition and many children in developing countries die without access to basic necessities. More efforts are needed to accelerate the reduction in child deaths and ensure all children can access essential services in order to achieve the UN goal by 2028.
