Moving to Vaadin 7 involves migrating from Vaadin 6 to take advantage of new features in Vaadin 7 including a new windowing API, improved field groups and converters, and SASS based themes. The migration involves updating dependencies to Vaadin 7, replacing the Application and Window classes with the UI class, and converting themes to use SASS. Many APIs are backwards compatible but some changes like separate presentation of field groups and converters may require updates to code. The Vaadin documentation provides guides on migration and information on new features in Vaadin 7.
Room with a Vue - Introduction to Vue.jsZachary Klein
Angular has brought MVC & dependency injection to the browser, while React nudges developers towards a simpler, functional approach to view rendering. What if there was a tool that took the best ideas from both of these titans, giving us simple, expressive components while still including enough “magic” to significantly boost developer productivity?
Enter Vue.js
In this talk we’ll get to know this new kid on the frontend block, contrast Vue with it’s better known rivals. We’ll explore the ecosystem: state management with Vuex, routing with Vue-router - and see why Vue.js might not be just another JavaScript framework.
Do you hear of Vue.js everywhere lately? With this presentation, you will be able to create your first app in just 30 minutes. Understand the basics and get yourself a solid knowledge to start your journey with the new progressive JavaScript Framework.

A guide to create a simple Java application and upload it to the Google Cloud Platform with Google App Engine. This presentation covers usage of persistence API with both Google Cloud SQL and Google Cloud Datastore.
Vue.js is a modern JavaScript framework for building UI on the web. It managed to combine hipster virtual DOM approach with API well known to any Angular developer. Components, SSR, CLI, state management, dev tools and much more. Besides it has smallest footprint (23kb gziped) and provides great developer experience. Those are the reasons the community and the adoption was growing rapidly last year. We'll have an intro to vue.js API and usage.
Single Page App (SPA) frameworks offer many benefits over traditional web apps which do all of their HTML generation on the server side. Popular SPA frameworks include Vue, React and Angular. Micronaut is very well suited for publishing REST APIs and is a terrific fit for implementing backend logic for SPAs.
These are the slides of my talk at the San Francisco Java User Group.
They don't really stand on their own since there was a lot of hands-on demonstration, but are nice to browse anyway :-)
This talk is a fast-paced introduction to the Micronaut framework, from creating the first app to orchestrating a microservice federation and deploying to the cloud.
Znasz podstawy HTMLa, CSSa i JavaScriptu? Może na studiach miałeś okazję bawić się jQuery? To wystarczy, by zacząć swoją przygodę z Vue.js.
Grails 4 takes the powerful and flexibility of the Grails framework to a new level, with the latest versions of core frameworks like Spring 5.1, Spring Boot 2.1, Gradle 5, and Groovy 2.5. Additionally, Micronaut is now part of the Grails foundation, allowing many powerful features from Micronaut to be used natively within your Grails apps. In this talk, we’ll look at how you can upgrade your Grails 3 project (with a little aside for Grails 2 projects as well) to Grails 4, and get a taste of the new features at your disposal in this exciting new release.
Vaadin is quickly popularizing Java framework for developing rich and interactive server-driven web applications. Vaadin is built around core Servlet and Google Web Toolkit (GWT) technologies and it strives to developer productivity by providing large library of components and ready made functionality that hides the hard parts of web development allowing developers to concentrate to the real business problem at hand. During this session we’ll cover the basics of building Vaadin based web applications: layouting, data binding, application deployment and Vaadin Touckit integration for mobile devices. Attending the speech does not require thorough understanding of web technologies in general, session will include demonstration and live coding.
Workshop on how to build Vaadin Add-ons. We introduce two styles of building Vaadin add-on components for Vaadin: integrating an existing GWT widget (DatePicker), and integrating an existing JavaScript library (three.js).

Apache Wicket is constantly growing in popularity throughout all kinds of projects. However Wicket doesn't come out of the box with a built-in Java EE support. Integration to CDI is missing and the same is valid for Bean Validation support for example. This session demonstrates how you can user CDI, Conversations and Bean Validation together with Apache Wicket. The first part of the talk will consist of a small slide-driven theoretical part whereas the second part will consist of a coding session that demonstrates hands-on how to hook everything together.
Modular Test-driven SPAs with Spring and AngularJSGunnar Hillert
Single-page Applications (SPA) are all the rage these days and with them there is an avalanche of new tools, libraries and frameworks we need to know. But what does this mean for us as Spring developers? In this session we will give you an overview of the current landscape and illustrate the choices the Spring XD team has made for its user interface. What do I use to write SPA applications? How do I integrate them into existing Spring-based backends? How do I build them? Can I integrate them into my existing Gradle or Maven build processes in order to achieve complete build automation? How do I integrate realtime messaging using Spring's SockJS/WebSocket support? In this talk we will answer these and many more questions. We will cover frameworks such as AngularJS, Bootstrap, RequireJS; tools like Bower, Grunt, Gulp; and also talk about testing using Karma and Protractor.

Ready to write an amazing front-end for your app? There are *so* many great tools, like React, Vue.js, module loaders, Sass, LESS, PostCSS and more. But, they all have one thing in common: you need to configure a *build* system before you write a single line of code! Thankfully, there's Webpack: the leading tool for processing & bundling your JavaScript and CSS. There's just one problem: configuring Webpack is tough and requires a lot of Webpack-specific knowledge. Say hello to Webpack Encore: a library built by Symfony to quickly bootstrap a sophisticated asset setup, complete with minification, SASS processing, automatic versioning, Babel support and *everything* you need to start writing great JavaScript quickly. In this talk, we'll also learn about using JavaScript modules, how to bootstrap a framework (like React) and other important modern practices. Give your assets a huge boost with Webpack Encore!
Refactoring Large Web Applications with Backbone.jsStacy London
Have you ever starting working on a large, existing web application and jQuery spaghetti-code is all over the place? Your mind swirls as you try to figure out what code belongs to what component on what page. There are no JavaScript unit tests and you're terrified of making a change and breaking everything? I'm going to talk through the real life story of how Backbone.js helped to bring organization/structure, modularity, and testability to a large multi-page web application.
How to build Vaadin apps with managed beans? How to use Spring or CDI with Vaadin? How to create abstractions that are powerful but abstract, How to do dependency inversion with Vaadin apps?

Epistemic Interaction - tuning interfaces to provide information for AI supportAlan Dix
Paper presented at SYNERGY workshop at AVI 2024, Genoa, Italy. 3rd June 2024
https://alandix.com/academic/papers/synergy2024-epistemic/
As machine learning integrates deeper into human-computer interactions, the concept of epistemic interaction emerges, aiming to refine these interactions to enhance system adaptability. This approach encourages minor, intentional adjustments in user behaviour to enrich the data available for system learning. This paper introduces epistemic interaction within the context of human-system communication, illustrating how deliberate interaction design can improve system understanding and adaptation. Through concrete examples, we demonstrate the potential of epistemic interaction to significantly advance human-computer interaction by leveraging intuitive human communication strategies to inform system design and functionality, offering a novel pathway for enriching user-system engagements.

Neuro-symbolic is not enough, we need neuro-*semantic*Frank van Harmelen
Neuro-symbolic (NeSy) AI is on the rise. However, simply machine learning on just any symbolic structure is not sufficient to really harvest the gains of NeSy. These will only be gained when the symbolic structures have an actual semantics. I give an operational definition of semantics as “predictable inference”.
All of this illustrated with link prediction over knowledge graphs, but the argument is general.
