The Q-factor of the sensor is 174.
Determination of solid material permittivity using T-ring resonator for food ...TELKOMNIKA JOURNAL
In this paper, we present a simple design of a T-ring resonator sensor for characterizing solid detection. The sensor is based on a planar microwave ring resonator and operating at 4.2 GHz frequency with a high-quality factor and sensitivity. An optimization of the T-ring geometry and materials were made to achieve high sensitivity for microwave material characterizations. This technique can determine the properties of solid materials from range of 2 GHz to 12 GHz frequencies. Techniques of current microwave resonator are usually measuring the properties of material at frequencies with a wide range; however, their accuracy is limited. Contrary to techniques that have a narrowband which is normally measuring the properties of materials to a high-accuracy with limitation to only a single frequency. This sensor has a capability of measuring the properties of materials at frequencies of wide range to a high-accuracy. A good agreement is achieved between the simulated results of the tested materials and the values of the manufacturer’s Data sheets. An empirical equation has been developed accordingly for the simulated results of the tested materials. Various standard materials have been tested for validation and verification of the sensor sensitivity. The proposed concept enables the detection and characterization of materials and it has miniaturized the size with low cost, reusable, reliable, and ease of design fabrication with using a small size of tested sample. It is inspiring a broader of interest in developing microwave planar sensors and improving their applications in food industry, quality control and biomedical materials.
Transmission spectra of single ring coupled-waveguide resonator configuration...TELKOMNIKA JOURNAL
Development of optical waveguide resonators have greatly expanded and continues to grow since they have kinds potential applications such as wavelength filtering, switching, coupling and multiplexing. One of resonators, coupled waveguides, ring resonators are designed and operated using various coupling configurations. Ring resonators can be particularly used as wavelength filter if the wavelength can fit a whole multiple time in the circumference of the ring. This article proposes to investigate the transmission spectra from the power source and amplify it in linearized ring resonator configurations and varies the input amplitude on five different wavelengths. With finite difference time domain method, the geometry and power source are simulated to obtain the better result and configuration. The results show the intensity phenomena of filtering in optical circuit.
Incident and reflected two waves correlation with cancellous bone structureTELKOMNIKA JOURNAL
The correlation in bone microstructure for ultrasound pulse echo technique is still less accurate compared to through transmission technique. Previous works demonstrated, reflected two modes wave has significant association with bone porosity. The paper aims is to conduct simulation using pulse echo technique to examine the relationship between fast and slow waves with porosity of 2-dimensional cancellous bone models by comparing the result to through transmission technique. The “incident” and “reflected” waves were separated using bandlimited deconvolution method by estimating time threshold of fast and slow waves' transfer function. The parameters of the waves were computed, plotted versus porosity for six different thicknesses and the correlation coefficients between them were compared. The incident and reflected fast wave attenuations show marginally significant correlation with porosity for both bone models orientations. Wave propagation for parallel orientation dominated by incident and reflected fast wave, meanwhile, perpendicular orientation dominated by incident slow wave. The thickness factor affected wave amplitude but less affected the attenuation. Because of propagation loss, reflected wave shows lower correlation to porosity compared to incident wave. Hence, analyzing fast and slow waves might improve the measurement accuracy of pulse echo technique compared to using single mode wave to estimate bone quality.

A SIMPLE METHOD TO AMPLIFY MICRO DISPLACEMENTijics
A simple method to amplify the micro displacements produced by magnetostrictive effect, giant
magnetostrictive, converse piezoelectric and photo strictive effect, respectively, is reported. The device
consists mainly of two material rods with different coefficients of strains vs intensity of external fields,
which are rigidly jointed, so that the displacements created by different rods can be added directly. In
contrast with all other methods reported so far, which are all based on the principle of lever, this approach
holds some unique advantages that can be applied to respond to the electromagnetic fields with high

ideal and smooth amplification of micro displacement can be obtained with ease in principle.

Evolutionary algorithms for optimum design of thin broadband multilayer micro...eSAT Journals
Abstract In this paper we focused on the comparative study of three very popular and most recently developed nature inspired evolutionary algorithms namely Biogeography based optimization algorithm (BBO), Flower pollination algorithm (FPA) and Artificial bee colony optimization algorithm (ABC) for developing a model of 6 layers thin broadband (0.2-20GHz) microwave absorber. The model is optimized for oblique wide angle of incidence (450, 600) taking both TE and TM polarization of the electromagnetic wave under consideration. The primary goal of our design is to minimizing the overall reflection coefficient of the absorber and its total thickness by selecting the proper layer of materials from a predefined database of existing materials. 8 different models are presented and synthesize considering both these design consideration simultaneously and for only overall reflection coefficient of the absorber while total thickness is not taken into consideration during optimization for each cases. The optimum values of all the significant parameters of the multilayer absorber for different models have been compared and tabulated using BBO, FPA and ABC algorithms which established the superiority of our proposed design. Planar Microwave Sensors for Accurate Measurement of Material Characterizatio...TELKOMNIKA JOURNAL
Microwave sensor is used in various industrial applications and requires highly accurate
measurements for material properties. Conventionally, cavity waveguide perturbation, free-space
transmission, open-ended coaxial probe, and planar transmission line technique have been used for
characterizing materials. However, these planar transmission lines are often large and expensive to build,
further restricting their use in many important applications. Thus, this technique is cost effective, easy to
manufacture and due to its compact size, it has the potential to produce sensitivity and a high Q-factor for
various materials. This paper reviews the common characteristics of planar transmission line and
discusses numerous studies about several designs of the microstrip resonator to improve the sensor
performance in terms of the sensitivity and accuracy. This technique enables its use for several industrial
applications such as agriculture and quality control. It is believed that previous studies would lead to a
promising solution of characterizing materials with high sensitivity, particularly in determining a high Qfactor

Complimentary split ring resonator sensor with high sensitivity based on mate...TELKOMNIKA JOURNAL
A new model of microwave planar sensor established on the complementary split ring resonator (CSRR) as well as an air hole in substrate of the structure is introduced for a precise measurement of materials permittivity. The hole is filled into substrate of the planar microstrip line. The CSRR structure with hole is selected for the sensitivity analysis, the result is established to hold over quite sensitive compared with CSRR structure without hole and thus evidence to be more suitable for the sensor design. The sensor in the form of CSRRs operating at a 1.74–3.4 GHz band is explained. At resonance, it is found that the electric field produced straight the plane of CSRR being highly sensitive for the characterization of sample resident with the sensor. The minimum transmission frequency of sensor shifts from 3.4 to 1.74 GHz as the sample permittivity varies from 1 to 10. A numerical paradigm is introduced herein for the computation of the system resolution as a assignment of resonance frequency and sample permittivity using electromagnetic simulator. It is found that the proposed sensor provides 35% increment in sensitivity more than conventional sensor for same permittivity of the specimen.

Wavelet-based sensing technique in cognitive radio networkTELKOMNIKA JOURNAL
Cognitive radio is a smart radio that can change its transmitter parameter based on interaction with the environment in which it operates. The demand for frequency spectrum is growing due to a big data issue as many Internet of Things (IoT) devices are in the network. Based on previous research, most frequency spectrum was used, but some spectrums were not used, called spectrum hole. Energy detection is one of the spectrum sensing methods that has been frequently used since it is easy to use and does not require license users to have any prior signal understanding. But this technique is incapable of detecting at low signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) levels. Therefore, the wavelet-based sensing is proposed to overcome this issue and detect spectrum holes. The main objective of this work is to evaluate the performance of wavelet-based sensing and compare it with the energy detection technique. The findings show that the percentage of detection in wavelet-based sensing is 83% higher than energy detection performance. This result indicates that the wavelet-based sensing has higher precision in detection and the interference towards primary user can be decreased.
Design of Micro strip Antenna in Ism Band with Polarization Diversity and Fre...paperpublications3
Abstract: In the modern world especially during the last two decades, Wireless communications has been developed widely and rapidly. In future, development in personal communication devices will provide image, speech and data communications at any time, and anywhere around the world. It shows that the future communication terminal antennas must meet the requirements of multi-band or wideband operations to cover the frequency band of operation. Frequency agile antennas in ISM band (2.4-2.4835) GHz that support diversity polarization provides excellent performance for applications including multifunction radar, space-based platforms, wireless communications, and personal electronic devices. To reduce the transmission losses, matching in polarization in both the transmitter and receiver antennas is very much important. In this paper we will design two microstrip antenna one with linearly polarized and other with circularly polarized in 2.4 GHz ISM band with frequency agility in 2.4-2.4835 GHz. In both the design single feeding is used. This paper presents a new design for a linearly polarized antenna based on rectangular microstrip patch. Circular polarization is generated by truncating two opposite edges from a rectangular patch antenna. The truncation splits the field with equal magnitude and 90° phase shift into two orthogonal modes. Both the antennas are simulated with high frequency simulating software (HFSS).
A novel miniature coplanar band-pass filter for ISM applicationsjournalBEEI
This paper presents a novel approach to design a compact miniature coplanar band-pass filter by using rectangular split ring resonator. This proposed circuit is designed for the Industrial, Scientific and, Medical (ISM) frequency band applications at 2.4 GHz. At the first stage, a metamaterial resonator is designed and simulated in a TEM waveguide to verifiy its electromagnetic proprieties around the desired frequency bands. At the second stage, a band pass filter is designed using the proposed metamaterial resonator. Many parametric studies are realized to investigate the effect and influence of some resonator parameters on the proposed BPF performances. ADS Agilent and CST-MWS solvers are used in order to verify the simulated results. The circuit frequency responses show an excellent insertion loss and good return loss in the passband.

Coplanar waveguide low pass filter based on square complementary split ring r...TELKOMNIKA JOURNAL
In this paper, we present a novel coplanar waveguide low pass filter (LPF)structure based on the use of square complementary split ring resonators (CSRRs) in order to enhance the performances of a low pass filter. Especially, to enlarge the bandwidth of the LPF, the insertion losses and to increase the rejection of the LPF. The CSRRs are optimised and inserted periodically along the center conductor of the CPW line with a CPW ground integrating stubs permitting to enlarge the bandwidth. The simulation results of this filter show a -3 dB cut-off frequency equal to fc = 5.28 GHz. The designed filter has a good rejection in the stop band which below -20 dB and presents a good insertion loss in the bandwidth. The proposed filter has been fabricated and tested which give a good agreement between simulation and measurement results, the whole dimensions of the validated filter are 35.48x21.16 mm2. The originality of this work is the wide rejection band and the miniature dimensions.

Due to high demand of using cordless mobile device, the interest in wireless energy transfer (WET) has been growth intensively. This paper presented a method to obtained optimum transmitter receiver ratio for maximum performance of WET system using different initial antenna size at various distance. An optimized algorithm has been developed to determine the optimum ratios that yield the highest wireless transfer efficiency (WTE) at near field communication (NFC) frequency, 13.56MHz. 30mm x 30mm single square loop antenna is used as initial size of both transmitter and receiver using FR4 with operating distance = 50mm. Operating distance and initial size of the antenna will be varied and the effect to the WTE will be studied using Matlab, verified using Microsoft Studio CST. At distance = 50mm and initial size of the antenna = 30mm x 30mm, optimum transmitter to receiver ratio equal to 1:3 is obtained. The pattern of optimum transmitter receiver ratio between Matlab and CST has met an agreement. This research limited to integer transmitter receiver ratio used only and no decimal number being involved in magnify the transmitter size.
Recent research shows the tremendous potential for the development of optical devices viz. photo-detector, optical sources, connectors and applications etc. This is mainly because of the success of optical communication in the recent for gigabit transmission and is intended for terabits transmission in future. In this paper, mathematical model for the optical dependence of I-V, C-V characteristics of MISFET structure (to be used as photo-detector) is reported. Model is based on solution of Poisson‟s and current continuity equation. Proposed structure of MISFET includes, In0.53Ga0.47As used as substrate material and InP as insulator. Light is made to incident perpendicular to the surface. Drain current can be controlled optically by means of varying light intensity of incident radiation. There is significant effect of intensity modulation on IV and CV characteristics of MISFET. As a result of intensity modulation, drain current increases significantly in presence of illumination mainly due to change in carrier concentration of channel results from photo-generated carriers. Simulation of mathematical model is carried out in MATLAB.

Measuring the underwater received power behavior for 433 mhz radio frequency ...journalBEEI
Underwater wireless sensor network (UWSN) important to enhance the widely use of the application of the Internet of things (IoT) for underwater. Uses of the acoustics base of wave propagations are the best ways to establish the UWSN. But the unpracticality of the hardware due to the size and cost has limited the application of UWSN. Radio frequency (RF) wave propagation is the best way to overcome this situation. Low frequency of the RF wave is proven feasible and suitable for underwater communication. 433 MHz RF were chosen to measuring the underwater received power behavior between the transmitter node and receiver node based on different distance and depth. HC12 transceiver module was used as a transmitter and spectrum analyzer with the telescopic antenna was used as a receiver. The received power give a good reading when the transmitter note was at 0.5-meter depth with a maximum operating range within 12 meters from the receiver.

Square transposition: an approach to the transposition process in block cipherjournalBEEI
The transposition process is needed in cryptography to create a diffusion effect on data encryption standard (DES) and advanced encryption standard (AES) algorithms as standard information security algorithms by the National Institute of Standards and Technology. The problem with DES and AES algorithms is that their transposition index values form patterns and do not form random values. This condition will certainly make it easier for a cryptanalyst to look for a relationship between ciphertexts because some processes are predictable. This research designs a transposition algorithm called square transposition. Each process uses square 8 × 8 as a place to insert and retrieve 64-bits. The determination of the pairing of the input scheme and the retrieval scheme that have unequal flow is an important factor in producing a good transposition. The square transposition can generate random and non-pattern indices so that transposition can be done better than DES and AES.
Hyper-parameter optimization of convolutional neural network based on particl...journalBEEI
Deep neural networks have accomplished enormous progress in tackling many problems. More specifically, convolutional neural network (CNN) is a category of deep networks that have been a dominant technique in computer vision tasks. Despite that these deep neural networks are highly effective; the ideal structure is still an issue that needs a lot of investigation. Deep Convolutional Neural Network model is usually designed manually by trials and repeated tests which enormously constrain its application. Many hyper-parameters of the CNN can affect the model performance. These parameters are depth of the network, numbers of convolutional layers, and numbers of kernels with their sizes. Therefore, it may be a huge challenge to design an appropriate CNN model that uses optimized hyper-parameters and reduces the reliance on manual involvement and domain expertise. In this paper, a design architecture method for CNNs is proposed by utilization of particle swarm optimization (PSO) algorithm to learn the optimal CNN hyper-parameters values. In the experiment, we used Modified National Institute of Standards and Technology (MNIST) database of handwritten digit recognition. The experiments showed that our proposed approach can find an architecture that is competitive to the state-of-the-art models with a testing error of 0.87%.
Supervised machine learning based liver disease prediction approach with LASS...journalBEEI
In this contemporary era, the uses of machine learning techniques are increasing rapidly in the field of medical science for detecting various diseases such as liver disease (LD). Around the globe, a large number of people die because of this deadly disease. By diagnosing the disease in a primary stage, early treatment can be helpful to cure the patient. In this research paper, a method is proposed to diagnose the LD using supervised machine learning classification algorithms, namely logistic regression, decision tree, random forest, AdaBoost, KNN, linear discriminant analysis, gradient boosting and support vector machine (SVM). We also deployed a least absolute shrinkage and selection operator (LASSO) feature selection technique on our taken dataset to suggest the most highly correlated attributes of LD. The predictions with 10 fold cross-validation (CV) made by the algorithms are tested in terms of accuracy, sensitivity, precision and f1-score values to forecast the disease. It is observed that the decision tree algorithm has the best performance score where accuracy, precision, sensitivity and f1-score values are 94.295%, 92%, 99% and 96% respectively with the inclusion of LASSO. Furthermore, a comparison with recent studies is shown to prove the significance of the proposed system.
A secure and energy saving protocol for wireless sensor networksjournalBEEI
The research domain for wireless sensor networks (WSN) has been extensively conducted due to innovative technologies and research directions that have come up addressing the usability of WSN under various schemes. This domain permits dependable tracking of a diversity of environments for both military and civil applications. The key management mechanism is a primary protocol for keeping the privacy and confidentiality of the data transmitted among different sensor nodes in WSNs. Since node's size is small; they are intrinsically limited by inadequate resources such as battery life-time and memory capacity. The proposed secure and energy saving protocol (SESP) for wireless sensor networks) has a significant impact on the overall network life-time and energy dissipation. To encrypt sent messsages, the SESP uses the public-key cryptography’s concept. It depends on sensor nodes' identities (IDs) to prevent the messages repeated; making security goals- authentication, confidentiality, integrity, availability, and freshness to be achieved. Finally, simulation results show that the proposed approach produced better energy consumption and network life-time compared to LEACH protocol; sensors are dead after 900 rounds in the proposed SESP protocol. While, in the low-energy adaptive clustering hierarchy (LEACH) scheme, the sensors are dead after 750 rounds.

Dynamic learning environment has emerged as a powerful platform in a modern e-learning system. The learning situation that constantly changing has forced the learning platform to adapt and personalize its learning resources for students. Evidence suggested that adaptation and personalization of e-learning systems (APLS) can be achieved by utilizing learner modeling, domain modeling, and instructional modeling. In the literature of APLS, questions have been raised about the role of individual characteristics that are relevant for adaptation. With several options, a new problem has been raised where the attributes of students in APLS often overlap and are not related between studies. Therefore, this study proposed a list of learner model attributes in dynamic learning to support adaptation and personalization. The study was conducted by exploring concepts from the literature selected based on the best criteria. Then, we described the results of important concepts in student modeling and provided definitions and examples of data values that researchers have used. Besides, we also discussed the implementation of the selected learner model in providing adaptation in dynamic learning.

Wireless HART stack using multiprocessor technique with laxity algorithmjournalBEEI
The use of a real-time operating system is required for the demarcation of industrial wireless sensor network (IWSN) stacks (RTOS). In the industrial world, a vast number of sensors are utilised to gather various types of data. The data gathered by the sensors cannot be prioritised ahead of time. Because all of the information is equally essential. As a result, a protocol stack is employed to guarantee that data is acquired and processed fairly. In IWSN, the protocol stack is implemented using RTOS. The data collected from IWSN sensor nodes is processed using non-preemptive scheduling and the protocol stack, and then sent in parallel to the IWSN's central controller. The real-time operating system (RTOS) is a process that occurs between hardware and software. Packets must be sent at a certain time. It's possible that some packets may collide during transmission. We're going to undertake this project to get around this collision. As a prototype, this project is divided into two parts. The first uses RTOS and the LPC2148 as a master node, while the second serves as a standard data collection node to which sensors are attached. Any controller may be used in the second part, depending on the situation. Wireless HART allows two nodes to communicate with each other.

Exact secure outage probability performance of uplinkdownlink multiple access...journalBEEI
In this paper, we study uplink-downlink non-orthogonal multiple access (NOMA) systems by considering the secure performance at the physical layer. In the considered system model, the base station acts a relay to allow two users at the left side communicate with two users at the right side. By considering imperfect channel state information (CSI), the secure performance need be studied since an eavesdropper wants to overhear signals processed at the downlink. To provide secure performance metric, we derive exact expressions of secrecy outage probability (SOP) and and evaluating the impacts of main parameters on SOP metric. The important finding is that we can achieve the higher secrecy performance at high signal to noise ratio (SNR). Moreover, the numerical results demonstrate that the SOP tends to a constant at high SNR. Finally, our results show that the power allocation factors, target rates are main factors affecting to the secrecy performance of considered uplink-downlink NOMA systems.

Besides that, to develop a new design and validate the antenna frequencies that will operate at 2.4 GHz and 5.4 GHz. At 5.4 GHz, more data can be transmitted compare to 2.4 GHz. However, 2.4 GHz has long distance of radiation, so it can be used when far away from the antenna module compare to 5 GHz that has short distance in radiation. The development of this project includes the scope of designing and testing of antenna using computer simulation technology (CST) 2018 software and vector network analyzer (VNA) equipment. In the process of designing, fundamental parameters of antenna are being measured and validated, in purpose to identify the better antenna performance.
Transforming data-centric eXtensible markup language into relational database...journalBEEI
eXtensible markup language (XML) appeared internationally as the format for data representation over the web. Yet, most organizations are still utilising relational databases as their database solutions. As such, it is crucial to provide seamless integration via effective transformation between these database infrastructures. In this paper, we propose XML-REG to bridge these two technologies based on node-based and path-based approaches. The node-based approach is good to annotate each positional node uniquely, while the path-based approach provides summarised path information to join the nodes. On top of that, a new range labelling is also proposed to annotate nodes uniquely by ensuring the structural relationships are maintained between nodes. If a new node is to be added to the document, re-labelling is not required as the new label will be assigned to the node via the new proposed labelling scheme. Experimental evaluations indicated that the performance of XML-REG exceeded XMap, XRecursive, XAncestor and Mini-XML concerning storing time, query retrieval time and scalability. This research produces a core framework for XML to relational databases (RDB) mapping, which could be adopted in various industries.

This paper presents the use of the inverse confidential technique on bilateral function with the territorial intensity-based optical flow to prove the effectiveness in noise resistance environment. In general, the image’s motion vector is coded by the technique called optical flow where the sequences of the image are used to determine the motion vector. But, the accuracy rate of the motion vector is reduced when the source of image sequences is interfered by noises. This work proved that the inverse confidential technique on bilateral function can increase the percentage of accuracy in the motion vector determination by the territorial intensity-based optical flow under the noisy environment. We performed the testing with several kinds of non-Gaussian noises at several patterns of standard image sequences by analyzing the result of the motion vector in a form of the error vector magnitude (EVM) and compared it with several noise resistance techniques in territorial intensity-based optical flow method.

An approach of re-organizing input dataset to enhance the quality of emotion ...journalBEEI
The purpose of this paper is to propose an approach of re-organizing input data to recognize emotion based on short signal segments and increase the quality of emotional recognition using physiological signals. MIT's long physiological signal set was divided into two new datasets, with shorter and overlapped segments. Three different classification methods (support vector machine, random forest, and multilayer perceptron) were implemented to identify eight emotional states based on statistical features of each segment in these two datasets. By re-organizing the input dataset, the quality of recognition results was enhanced. The random forest shows the best classification result among three implemented classification methods, with an accuracy of 97.72% for eight emotional states, on the overlapped dataset. This approach shows that, by re-organizing the input dataset, the high accuracy of recognition results can be achieved without the use of EEG and ECG signals.
Parking detection system using background subtraction and HSV color segmentationjournalBEEI
Manual system vehicle parking makes finding vacant parking lots difficult, so it has to check directly to the vacant space. If many people do parking, then the time needed for it is very much or requires many people to handle it. This research develops a real-time parking system to detect parking. The system is designed using the HSV color segmentation method in determining the background image. In addition, the detection process uses the background subtraction method. Applying these two methods requires image preprocessing using several methods such as grayscaling, blurring (low-pass filter). In addition, it is followed by a thresholding and filtering process to get the best image in the detection process. In the process, there is a determination of the ROI to determine the focus area of the object identified as empty parking. The parking detection process produces the best average accuracy of 95.76%. The minimum threshold value of 255 pixels is 0.4. This value is the best value from 33 test data in several criteria, such as the time of capture, composition and color of the vehicle, the shape of the shadow of the object’s environment, and the intensity of light. This parking detection system can be implemented in real-time to determine the position of an empty place.
Quality of service performances of video and voice transmission in universal ...journalBEEI
The universal mobile telecommunications system (UMTS) has distinct benefits in that it supports a wide range of quality of service (QoS) criteria that users require in order to fulfill their requirements. The transmission of video and audio in real-time applications places a high demand on the cellular network, therefore QoS is a major problem in these applications. The ability to provide QoS in the UMTS backbone network necessitates an active QoS mechanism in order to maintain the necessary level of convenience on UMTS networks. For UMTS networks, investigation models for end-to-end QoS, total transmitted and received data, packet loss, and throughput providing techniques are run and assessed and the simulation results are examined. According to the results, appropriate QoS adaption allows for specific voice and video transmission. Finally, by analyzing existing QoS parameters, the QoS performance of 4G/UMTS networks may be improved.

CFD Simulation of By-pass Flow in a HRSG module by R&R Consult.pptxR&R Consult
CFD analysis is incredibly effective at solving mysteries and improving the performance of complex systems!
Here's a great example: At a large natural gas-fired power plant, where they use waste heat to generate steam and energy, they were puzzled that their boiler wasn't producing as much steam as expected.
R&R and Tetra Engineering Group Inc. were asked to solve the issue with reduced steam production.
An inspection had shown that a significant amount of hot flue gas was bypassing the boiler tubes, where the heat was supposed to be transferred.
R&R Consult conducted a CFD analysis, which revealed that 6.3% of the flue gas was bypassing the boiler tubes without transferring heat. The analysis also showed that the flue gas was instead being directed along the sides of the boiler and between the modules that were supposed to capture the heat. This was the cause of the reduced performance.
Based on our results, Tetra Engineering installed covering plates to reduce the bypass flow. This improved the boiler's performance and increased electricity production.
It is always satisfying when we can help solve complex challenges like this. Do your systems also need a check-up or optimization? Give us a call!

Microwave Planar Sensor for Determination of the Permittivity of Dielectric Material (Mohd Khairy Ismail)

shape due to its high accuracy. The high-quality factor (Q-factor) of the resonator causes a high sensitivity
device where it can be used to sense the difference in physical quantities; depends on the complex
permeability of MUT [9-11].
1.1. Perturbation Technique
The most frequent technique to measure the complex permittivity of lossy material is known as the
perturbation technique. This technique has been used for measuring the electromagnetic characteristics
between the empty and partially loaded MUTs [12]. When a small piece of dielectric material (MUT) is
introduced into the resonant cavity, the resonance frequency is shifted by a small amount [13]. Plus, the
selectivity of the cavity is lowered. These effects are commonly used in the measurement of properties of the
material; the relation between the shifted of resonance frequencies, selectivity and the permittivity of the
sample.
The MUTs is placed at a specific location on the resonator where the electric field (e-field) is at a
maximum condition. Then, the insertion of the MUTs within the cavity causes the effect of perturbation to
the overall circuit. The perturbation causes a shifting of the resonance frequency and a decrease in the
unloaded Q-factor. The cavity response in the perturbation is related to the dielectric properties of the tested
material through the cavity perturbation theory. Based on the theory of perturbation, it is anticipated that the
fractional change in the resonant frequency has increased with the increasing of the dielectric constant of the
MUTs [14]. The resonance frequency is shifted to the lower frequency when the MUTs are being placed on
the resonator sensor. This is because of the maximum electric field of the resonator sensor when it‟s
perturbed to the sample.
1.2. Reflection Method
Reflection methods is a method which able to measure only one of the parameters, either the
permittivity or the permeability. In this project only, the permittivity parameter is measured. The
electromagnetic waves are directed to the MUT, and then the properties of the sample is detected from the
reflection coefficient that occurs in the defined reference plane. To apply the reflection method in the
measurement of the dielectric property, one port resonator is mainly used. The single port capability to
transmit the signal in one port, then, the received signal is reflected from the MUT to the same port it
transmits before. The measured S-parameter is S1, 1 or S2, 2. The dynamic range of reflection measurements is
limited by the directivity of the measurement port.
The one port calibration is compulsory to improve the accuracy and sensitivity of the measurement
of the system. Through the calibration, it can measure and remove the three systematic error terms in the
measurement of the system; the directivity, source match and also the reflection tracking. The simple
calibration is enough to be conducted [15]. In Figure 1, it shows the graph of S-parameter, S1, 1. The value
of the S1,1 can be determined by using the equation 1.1; for determining the half-power width. In the
equation, the S1,1b is the base line of the resonance for S1,1 value. While, the S1,1fo is the resonance
frequency value for the S1, 1 [16]. Besides, from Figure 1 also the Q-factor of the resonator can be
determined based on the bandwidth and the resonant frequency which is:

Equations 2 to 18 are shown below to design a micro-strip ring resonator, the principle that can be

The micro - strip resonator sensor is a close-loop transmission line. To form the resonant frequency,
the power is capacitive coupled through the feed-line and the gap between them. So, the resonant frequency
happens when the mean circumstances of the ring are equal to the integral of the guided wavelength.

3. RESULTS AND ANALYSIS
After simulation work done, it shows that the antenna bandwidth had been enhanced by the addition
of the modified EC-SRR. An improvement of the bandwidth is 727 MHz, increase from 0.645 GHz (Design
A) to 1.372 GHz (Design D). The return loss also increases but not gives the significant effect to the antenna
design.
3.1. Simulated Result
The single port rectangular resonator sensor with the resonance frequency of 4GHz is designed. The
structure dimension of the resonator sensor is calculated based on the mathematical analysis. While, three
parameters are measured through the sensor; the resonant frequency, Q-factor and the return loss with five
different samples and permittivity; air, Roger 5880, Roger 4350, FR-4 and Roger 3010.
The sensor is constructed by using the Roger 5880 with the thickness of 0.787 mm and loss tangent
of 0.009. The basic rectangular resonator sensor is demonstrated in Figure 3. But, based on the S1, 1 result, it
shows the sensor operates on 3.992 GHz and has a large return loss which is - 6.4881 dB; the targeted return
loss is less than -10 dB.
Although the basic resonator sensor able to shows a good performance in the resonant frequency
and in the strength of the electromagnetic field, the basic design needs a modification. Thus, a modification
in the design is proposed to improve the return loss of the resonator sensor. The enhancement method is
introduced in the design to overcome the problem of low performance in the resonator due to the large return
loss. Figure 4 shows the structure of the rectangular sensor with the enhancement method.
Figure 3. The basic rectangular resonator sensor Figure 4. The structure of proposed resonator sensor
The performance of the proposed resonator sensor with the enhancement method is measured based
on the S1, 1 signal due to the usage of the reflection method. The bandwidth of the S1, 1 is gathered at -3 dB
from the base line of the resonance of S1, 1; refer to Figure 5. So, the resonance frequency is occurring at
3.992 GHz while the bandwidth of the S1, 1 is 0.070678 GHz. The Q-factor of the proposed resonator sensor
in the simulation is 113.
The MUTs are placed in a maximum electric field (e-field) region as indicated in Figure 5 and
Figure 6. Thus, the resonator sensor produces a reduction in the Q-factor as well as the reduction in the
resonant frequency as associated with the loss of the material. Then, the resonator sensor can be used to

measure the dielectric properties of the MUTs by using the perturbation method; based on the shifting of the
resonance frequency.
Figure 5. The S1,1 graph of the proposed design
Figure 6. The e-field in the resonator sensor
Figure 7 shows the overlay sample on the resonator sensor. In Figure 8, it shows the changes in the
resonant frequency after different types of material is placed on the resonator sensor through simulation in
CST software, the frequency is shifted. Four samples have been tested like FR-4, Roger 5880, Roger 4350
and Roger 3010. The resonant frequency with the sample of air refers to the without sample situation.
Besides, based on Figure 8 also, the frequency is shifted to the lower frequency when the overlay sample is
used. This is because of the maximum electric field of the resonator when it is perturbed to the sample. The
return loss level (dB) also shows a variation when the sample is applied to the resonator sensor due to the
effective dielectric constant.

Figure 8. The changes of resonant frequency with different overlay samples in simulation
Based on both data representations in Figure 9, the sensitivity of the sensor is represented in terms
of relative shift in resonance frequency with the permittivity of MUTs. It‟s concluded that the higher
permittivity of the samples causes the higher the percentage of frequency shifting. Roger 5880 has the lowest
percentage which is 2.6 %, followed by Roger 4350, 8.4 %, FR-4 16.8 % and Roger 3010, 27.6 %. Where the
permittivity of Roger 5880 is 2.2, Roger 4350 is 3.48, FR-4 is 4.4 and Roger 3010 is 10.2.

3.2. Measured Result
The proposed resonator sensor is fabricated on Roger 5880 substrate and it is found to be working
on 3.98GHz of resonant frequency. Figure 10 shows the experimental setup for the fabricated sensor. The
changes of resonant frequency and return loss of the MUTs are measured by using the vector Network
Analyzer (VNA). The s1P data gained from the measurement is imported to the CST software. Based on the
S1,1 result, it shows that the return loss is - 6.3575 dB and the Q-factor are 174. The improvement of the
sensor in term of Q-factor is 54 %.

While, Figure 11 shows the result of the measurement of different types of MUTs and permittivity.
The data in Figure 11 is represented in the bar chart; Figure 12. The measurement results show that the
sample of Roger 3010 has the highest percentage of frequency shifting with a large difference of frequency
when compared with the resonant frequency without shifting. The percentage of frequency shifting is 26.7 %.
The lowest percentage of frequency shifting happens with the sample Roger 5880, followed by Roger 4350
and FR-4. The measurement result also shows that the higher the permittivity of the sample, the larger the
percentage of frequency shifting.
Figure 11. The changes of resonant frequency with
different overlay samples in simulation
Figure 12. The percentage of frequency shifting
of different MUTs
Then, the simulation and measurement results of the sensor without sample (air) are demonstrated in
Figure 13. A small deviation occured between the simulated and measured results. The measured resonance
frequency is slightly shifted from the simulation and the magnitude of the return loss is higher than the
simulated results. This is due to the mismatch between the feed-line and the connector of the portand the
tolerance of fabrications which limits the simulation accuracy.
The result shown in Figure 13 illustrates that the performance of the fabricated resonator sensor is in
a good agreement with the sensor in the simulation. By using the measured data, the relationship between the
shifting of resonant frequency and the standard permittivity can be modeled by using the second order
polynomial. It is the derivation of numerical model which is used to calculate the permittivity of the MUT.
The derivation model applied the curve fitting method instead; refer to Figure 14. Then, the measured
permittivity of the tested MUT is mathematically expressed as Equation 2.

From Table 2, it shows the result of the calculated permittivity. The error of the permittivity
regarding the usage of Equation 19 is in the range of 0.2% to 8%. The higher the permittivity of the sample
effect the lower the error.

3.3. Compared with Existing Resonator Sensor
Table 3 shows the tabulated data which have been compared with the proposed resonator sensor.
The comparison is made based on the resonance frequency, Q-factor and the return loss. From the table, it
shows that the proposed resonator sensor has the highest Q-factor compared to other two designs. But, the
return loss of the proposed sensor is the lowest. The result of the proposed sensor is due to the usage of the
enhancement method in the design where it introduces the “pushing effect” on the sensor. The method being
used by [17] and [18] shows the opposite result compared to the proposed rectangular sensor where the
sensor has a very low Q-factor, ≈64 but the return loss can achieve until -22.34 dB. Then, each of the
methods has a different level of resonance frequency.

The error percentage is calculated to measure the accuracy of the proposed rectangular sensor. The
data is represented in Table 4. Through the tabulated data, it shows that the proposed sensor gains the lower
range of error compared to the existing sensor. The percentage of error in the permittivity for the proposed
sensor is 0.29 % to 7.85 %, while for the existing sensor; the percentage of the error in the permittivity is
0.57 % to 12.70 % instead.
While analyzing Table 4, it shows that the percentage of error in the proposed sensor is decreased
linearly. The higher the permittivity of the MUTs, the lower the percentage of error in the rectangular sensor.
But, data for the existing sensor are taken from various sources. Thus, it can‟t be analyzed based on the

linearity of the error. But, in the existing sensor, the higher error is gained when there is Roger 5880 that act
as the sample while the lowest error is gained when the Roger 4350 acts as the sample. When there is no
sample overlay on the sensor, the error is 8%. For the FR-4 sample, the error of the permittivity is 5.68%.

4. CONCLUSION
The rectangular resonator sensor with the enhancement method is proposed in this paper. The
proposed sensor design able to improve the return loss of the basic rectangular resonator sensor; less than -10
dB. Regarding the simulated result, it shows that the performance of the proposed sensor is in good
agreement with the calculated result. While, by measuring the permittivity of the known samples, it is found
that the percentage of error for the proposed sensor is from 0.2% to 8%. The sensitivity and accuracy of the
sensor has been analyzed in terms of Q-factor and return loss. Plus, it is noted that the shifting of the
resonance frequency is affected by the permittivity of the sample. The higher the permittivity of the samples
effect the lower the resonance frequency. Thus, the fabricated resonator sensor is suitable to be applied in the
real life like in the food industry, agriculture and so on.
