This past month was teeming with events, from Microsoft Ignite 2021 wrapping up on November 4 to our glorious return to in-person events at MWC Los Angeles 2021 during the last week of October.
Among the many telco sessions at Ignite, we were joined by partners STL and Nokia to explore how telcos can apply analytics, artificial intelligence and automation across their organization and extended value network to improve business results, efficiency and organizational agility.
MWC LA provided a great opportunity to meet with many customers and partners, and get a pulse on new developments across the telecom industry, including Open RAN, edge, AI everywhere, and the tireless hunt for 5G’s killer app.
Most importantly though, MWC LA provided a return to normalcy as it paved the way for MWC Barcelona 2022, where we hope to once again meet our customers and partners to share our vision for the future of telecommunications, along with flavorful tapas and breathtaking views.

Across industries, organizations are venturing deeper into their digital transformation journeys every day, and the telco industry is no exception. Microsoft is front-and-center helping to lead the transition of mobile networks to an open, disaggregated, and software-based model, leveraging Azure for Operators as the platform of choice. In this edition, you’ll find numerous stories about telcos transitioning IT, BSS, OSS, and their most critical network workloads to the cloud—and how Microsoft and partner solutions are key to those efforts.
This transformation doesn’t stop with core services, but it extends to innovative solutions that generate new revenue streams for operators. In this place where cloud meets the edge, compute meets mobile, and 5G trends continue to drive innovation, customer demand for advanced network capabilities is surging. Azure Edge Zones with AT&T is a great example of how Microsoft partners with operators to dramatically improve an application’s performance while reducing overhead and complexity for enterprise customers. And our extensive portfolio of private network offerings, cited as the most innovative globally in a recent Omnia report, provide operators new private LTE/5G solutions to bring to market.
Finally, we’d like to welcome Francesco Venturini to the Microsoft family as the executive leader for Media & Communications, and we look forward to working alongside him. Wishing you all a safe and happy holiday season.

Monetizing the edge continues to be a top priority for telcos, and not a day goes by where we don’t have a meaningful conversation on the topic with a telco partner. While the edge’s killer app continues to elude the industry, private mobile networks and video analytics are quickly becoming the critical building blocks for bringing it to market – whatever it is.
So where can you learn more about monetizing the edge? The TM Forum Digital Transformation World Series 2021 provides a collaborative environment for operators and suppliers to come together, share ideas, and solve the industry’s toughest problems. Microsoft is an active participant in this year’s event, sharing best practices, successes, and industry insights across wide-ranging areas including edge, artificial intelligence, cloud transformation, and customer experience.

The European Commission, in a recent communication (April 19th), has identified 5G and Internet of Things (IoT) amongst the ICT standardisation priorities for the Digital Single Market (DSM). This session will discuss the emergence of the mobile edge computing paradigm to reduce the latency for processing near the source large quantities of data and the need of the emerging 5G technology to satisfy the requirements of different verticals. Mobile Edge Clouds have the potential to provide an enormous amount of resources, but it raises several research challenges related to the resilience, security, data portability and usage due to the presence of multiple trusted domains, as well as energy consumption of battery powered devices. Large and centralized clouds have been deployed and have shown how this paradigm can greatly improve performance and flexibility while reducing costs. However, there are many issues requiring solutions that are user and context aware, dynamic, and with the capability to handle heterogeneous demands and systems. This is a challenge triggered by the Internet of Things (IoT) scenario, which strongly requires cloud-based solutions that can be dynamically located and managed, on demand and with self-organization capabilities to serve the purposes of different verticals.

I’m amazed to see our tremendous growth in the industry in this quarter. There’s plenty to be optimistic
about. With COVID vaccines readily available to more and more people worldwide in the coming months,
we will hopefully begin transitioning back to the post-COVID landscape. I know I’m not alone when I say
that I can’t wait to get back into in person customer and partner meetings. We’re forging ahead with
getting customers ready for the new normal. Proud to see TIM Brazil to move 100% of their datacenters to
the cloud.
If one thing’s for sure, organizations in the telco space have transformed rapidly in this unprecedented
year. I’m excited to share The Network, Microsoft’s newest podcast series focused on digital resilience and
acceleration of technology for the telco industry, with stories from business leaders around the globe.

Microsoft believes the telecom edge is the catalyst creating a new world where the telecom and cloud industries join forces to eliminate duplication while creating a new era of latency-sensitive applications and services.
Edge video analytics will be the dominant service for edge computing, with our operator partners not only providing the underlying 5G connectivity, but edge capabilities close to end-users as well. Earlier this month, Singel announced Microsoft Azure Edge Zones integrated with Singtel’s 5G network, a key building block for delivering these advanced edge services. And these rich, multi-cloud, edge-aware applications can all be singularly managed via Azure Arc, as partner Nokia has shown as they empower telco customers in a multi-cloud world.
We’ll visit these themes and many more at the upcoming Mobile World Congress 2022 in Barcelona next week. Pack your bags and see you there!

Many of the benefits that Microsoft delivers to the enterprise are directly applicable in the networking space. But these capabilities must be modified to account for the unique carrier grade needs of operators. Our efforts are aimed at getting workloads on the network to function on a carrier-grade cloud, which is a hybrid cloud, spanning both public and dedicated
on-premises cloud infrastructure.
Telecommunication services are highly distributed and will likely become more so over time. As a result, the value of creating a carrier-grade hybrid cloud model lives in its ability to meet
customers where they are—at the edge of the cloud, the edge of the network, or the edge of the enterprise. In this edition, we provide an update on our acquisition of AT&T’s Network
Cloud, and explore how we’re partnering with telcos like Telefonica, Vodafone, and NTT to deliver new capabilities that streamline their business and reduce cost.
Mobile World Congress (MWC) Barcelona 2022 will gather policymakers and key industry stakeholders to discuss trends and developments in government and public policy, as well as
explore the event’s overall theme of Connectivity Is Unleashed across six topic areas: Cloud, 5G, IoT, FinTech, Tech Horizon, and AI. Microsoft comes to MWC with tremendous momentum in the telecommunications sector driven by new innovations from Azure for Operators. It’s time to plan your trip and prepare for an exciting four days of 5G, cloud, and edge! We look forward to meeting with you at the Fira and sharing the latest developments in our ongoing effort to create the future of telecommunications. ¡Nos vemos en Barcelona!
Microsoft Telecommunications Newsletter | June 2022Rick Lievano
There exists an industrywide consensus that 5G will unlock use cases across many sectors of industry and society. This new paradigm shift will enable massive machine-type communications (MMTC) for billions of devices, ultra-reliable low latency (URLLC) for AR and VR-enabled video devices, and enhanced mobile broadband (EMBB) to allow thousands of sports fans in a packed stadium to enjoy the on-field action live on their devices, all at the same time. This new breed of apps will bring together the cloud and the network, with 5G and multi-access edge computing (MEC) capabilities pushing computing closer to the problems they’re trying to solve. Developers will leverage network APIs as a control plane to make the best use of available infrastructure and the network, with more control over application performance and required capabilities for those next-generation video analytics, quality control, real-time management, and metaverse applications.
At Microsoft, we’re opening the door to the power of 5G to help developers take full advantage of the opportunity. We are committed to helping developers create on their own terms with a distributed, open-source environment and to build on a consistent, carrier-agnostic platform. And we are at the forefront of an effort to help standardize APIs, coordinating work across technology and communications providers. Last month, we touched on Edge Video Services (EVS), a Microsoft platform for developing video analytics solutions that can be deployed on Azure public MEC. In our top story this month, we learn that EVS is just the beginning, and partners are now broadly exploiting the power of Azure edge services to deliver even more incredible applications.
Let’s build the future of communications together!

In almost every conversation, I’m astounded by the amount of folks who mention the recent disruption that’s occurred in this industry. As the old adage goes: “…the only constant has been change.” Digital disruption has fueled digital transformation, and with the proliferation of companies offering broader arrays of services, enterprises are scrambling to keep up and offer newer and better things.
There’s been major consolidation across Telco and Media, and the fight for audience and revenue is more fierce than ever. As we have seen in these last few weeks, there have been industry changing merger talks between Warner Media and Discovery, Bouygues and M6 Groupe from Bertelsmann, and even Amazon and MGM. While we’re proud and confident in our most recent acquisitions, it’s safe to say that the competition is heating up.
As the amount of data used by organizations continues to grow, securing critical information and programs on in-house computer servers has become crucial. Cloud computing offers secure access to users from anywhere and has been widely accepted around the world for its business efficiencies, cost-effectiveness, and competitive advantages.
This e-Book explores the business benefits of cloud migration, including flexibility, higher security, easy accessibility, data recovery, and minimal maintenance. It also provides an overview of the leading cloud service providers, such as Microsoft Azure, Citrix, CompTIA, and AWS.
The e-Book covers the following topics:
The history of cloud computing
An explanation of the three different cloud computing services
A comparative analysis of Cloud vs On-Premises
The advantages of Cloud computing
Quick stats on Cloud-migrated business profits
The top 10 entrepreneurial benefits of Cloud migration
Common Cloud migration challenges faced by every CIO

Microsoft Telecommunications Newsletter | May 2022Rick Lievano
As 5G and multi-access edge computing (MEC) technologies mature and are more readily deployed, use cases are beginning to coalesce across a few distinct areas, one of which is video analytics. Vision is everything.
Azure private and public MEC capabilities enable low-latency applications at the edge of the mobile operator’s network, providing Azure compute services integrated with 5G connectivity. To light up new compelling video edge applications that benefit from low latency 5G connectivity, we are making available a video analytics library under the umbrella of Edge Video Services (EVS). The apps you create can include traffic management in a city, managing machines and robots in connected factories, handling customer demands and services in retail stores and restaurants, or tracking pedestrian traffic in sports arenas.
With Azure and EVS, your edge apps have both eyes and a brain to interpret what they see and take appropriate action. Our top story this month details the evolution of EVS along with its deployment on Azure public MEC connected to AT&T’s 5G network. It’s exciting to witness new use cases and apps that exploit the power of the cloud, AI, 5G, and edge as operators continue to innovate. What will you do with EVS?

"Impact of front-end architecture on development cost", Viktor TurskyiFwdays
I have heard many times that architecture is not important for the front-end. Also, many times I have seen how developers implement features on the front-end just following the standard rules for a framework and think that this is enough to successfully launch the project, and then the project fails. How to prevent this and what approach to choose? I have launched dozens of complex projects and during the talk we will analyze which approaches have worked for me and which have not.

Search and Society: Reimagining Information Access for Radical FuturesBhaskar Mitra
The field of Information retrieval (IR) is currently undergoing a transformative shift, at least partly due to the emerging applications of generative AI to information access. In this talk, we will deliberate on the sociotechnical implications of generative AI for information access. We will argue that there is both a critical necessity and an exciting opportunity for the IR community to re-center our research agendas on societal needs while dismantling the artificial separation between the work on fairness, accountability, transparency, and ethics in IR and the rest of IR research. Instead of adopting a reactionary strategy of trying to mitigate potential social harms from emerging technologies, the community should aim to proactively set the research agenda for the kinds of systems we should build inspired by diverse explicitly stated sociotechnical imaginaries. The sociotechnical imaginaries that underpin the design and development of information access technologies needs to be explicitly articulated, and we need to develop theories of change in context of these diverse perspectives. Our guiding future imaginaries must be informed by other academic fields, such as democratic theory and critical theory, and should be co-developed with social science scholars, legal scholars, civil rights and social justice activists, and artists, among others.

Networking enables the new world of Edge and 5G Computing
At the recent Microsoft Ignite 2019 conference, we introduced two new and related
perspectives on the future and roadmap of edge computing. Before getting further into
the details of Network Edge Compute (NEC) and Multi-access Edge Compute (MEC), let’s
take a look at the key scenarios which are emerging in line with 5G network deployments.
For a decade, we have been working with customers to move their workloads from their
on-premises locations to Azure to take advantage of the massive economies of scale of
the public cloud. We get this scale with the ongoing build-out of new Azure regions and
the constant increase of capacity in our existing regions, reducing the overall costs of
running data centers.
2. For most workloads, running in the cloud is the best choice. Our ability to innovate and
run Azure as efficiently as possible allows customers to focus on their business instead of
managing physical hardware and associated space, power, cooling, and physical security.
Now, with the advent of 5G mobile technology promising larger bandwidth and better
reliability, we see significant requirements for low latency offerings to enable scenarios
such as smart-buildings, factories, and agriculture. The “smart” prefix highlights that there
is a compute-intensive workload, typically running machine learning or artificial
intelligence-type logic, requiring compute resources to execute in near real-time.
Ultimately the latency, or the time from when data is generated to the time it is analyzed,
and a meaningful result is available, becomes critical for these smart-scenarios. Latency
has become the new currency, and to reduce latency we need to move the required
computing resources closer to the sensors, data origin or users.
