1. Grade: 11-12
Week of: June 1-5
Unit: The Cell
Subject: Biology
Materials: microslides, microslide viewers, pens, paper, text books, lab hand out
Accomidations/Modifications: available if needed
GLE(s): LS-H-A1 1. ; LS-H-A1 2.
Seven Step Lesson Plan: Kyle Guzik
Lesson Component Description of Component
Lesson Opening
(5-10 minutes)
Step 1: Objective
The student will be able to compare microscopic organisms in the cell.
The student will also be able to compare different human cells. Guiding
questions include: can the students identify the types of microscopic
plants and animals that live in the soil, and can the students identify the
structures and functions of cells in the human body?
Step 2: Motivation
I will give a brief introduction describing the diversity of forms and
functions observable at the microscopic level to encourage student
curiosity. The lesson will be interactive through the use of the microslide
viewer kit. Students will be encouraged to observe and draw.
Introduction of
New Material
(10-15 minutes)
Step 3: Introduction of New Material/Directed Lesson Sequence
This is a student driven learning experience. Students will be introduced
to new material through this hands-on activity. Students will observe and
answer questions about human cells such as blood cells and nerve cells
as well as life in the soil such as algae and nematodes.
Student Practice
of New Material
Step 4: Guided Practice
Having the students draw what they observe will facilitate close
observation of the slides.
Step 5: Independent Practice
Students will answer written questions about the slides if they are unable
to finish in class the worksheet will be assigned as homework.
Step 6: Alternate and Supplementary Activities
Supplementary activities include having students research soil organisms
and human cells in their textbooks and then prepare a drawing of the cell
or organism with at least five components labeled and each of these
components defined. Students could also work on assigned reading
2. Closing
(5-10 minutes)
Step 7: Assessment
Students will be assessed through a discussion of the slides observed and
by filling out a written handout.
