1. The document provides instructions for students to read about photosynthesis and prepare to teach their group. 1. 1. Read page 201. On yourpiece of paper draw an example of an autotroph (like grass) and a heterotroph
(like a cow) of your choice. Define autotroph and heterotroph for your group. Teach them that nearly all
of the energy that lining things need comes from the sun.
2. On your piece of paper write the photosynthesis equation found on page 206. Read the description of
the photosynthesis equation and be ready to explain it to your group when you present. Learn about ATP
and ADP by reading page 202 and 203. Draw the conversion of ADP to ATP on your piece of paper and
be ready to explain this to yourgroup.
3. Read the paragraphs about Van Helmont’s Experiment, Priestly’s Experiment and Jan Ingenhouz on
pages 204-206. Draw Van Helmont’s experiment at the beginning and again after five years. Show this
drawing to your group when you present. Explain that the 75 kg the plant gained in mass comes from
water and carbon dioxide. Explain to your group that carbon dioxide is used to make sugars and other
carbohydrates. Be ready to tell your group what Priestley discovered and what Ingenhouszdiscovered.
The answer to 3 D) is on page 206 in bold.
4. Read page 206. On yoursheet of paper define a pigment, and chlorophyll. Name the two types of
chlorophyll. Inform your group that the chloroplast contains the most pigments. Tell them why you think
this is the case (think about the fact that the chloroplast contains chlorophyll pigments and since these
pigments reflect green light particularly well, leaves appeargreen). Copy figure 8-5 on page 207 onto your
sheet of paper and explain it to your group.
5. You will teach your group about the parts of the chloroplast. Read pages 208 and 209. Copy figure 8-7
onto your sheet of paper and explain it to yourgroup. Be prepared to define granum, stroma, and thylakoid
for your group.
6. You will teach your group about electron carriers and the light dependant reactions. Read pages 209 and
210. Look over the figure on 211. Find the answer to 6A) and 6B) on page 209. Find the answer to 6C)
on page 210 in paragraph A. The answer to 6D) is also on page 210. On your sheet of paper devise an
effective way to represent what your group needs to learn to answer the question. Do not just use words.
Also include a picture.
7. You will teach your group about the light dependent reactions. Read pages 210 and 211. Pay special
attention to paragraph C) and paragraph D) on page 210 as these paragraphs will help you answer 7A) and
7B) for your group. Create a drawing on your sheet of paper to explain the light reactions. Use your
drawing to emphasize that the light reactions use water, ADP and NADP+ and that they produce oxygen
and two high energy compounds:NADPH and ATP.
8. You will teach yourgroup about the Calvin cycle. Read pages 212 and 213. Copy figure 8-11 onto
your sheet of paper and be prepared to explain it to your group. Find the answer to 8A) on page 212 and
the answer to 8B) on 213.
