INCREASE SOIL FERTILITY?
MICRO-ORGANISMS INCREASING SOIL
FERTILITY
Some bacteria are able to fix nitrogen from the
atmosphere to enrich soil with nitrogen and
increase its fertility.
These microbes are commonly called biological
nitrogen fixers.
Go through the book and cite one more
example of biological nitrogen fixer along with
the name of the category of micro-organisms
under which it comes.
Q. Name any two biological nitrogen fixers.
1.
2.
ACTIVITY
CLEANING THE ENVIRONMENT
• The large amounts of dead organic matter in
the form of decaying plants and sometimes
dead animals on the ground disappear after
some time.
• This is because the microorganisms
decompose dead organic waste of plants and
animals converting them into simple
substances. These substances are again used
by other plants and animals.
• Microorganisms can be used to degrade the
harmful and smelly substances and thereby
clean up the environment.
Why do you think the plastic materials are not
decomposed by the micro-organisms?
Q. Which of the following cannot be
decomposed by the micro-organisms?
(i)Plant remains
(ii)Animal remains
(iii)plastic water bottles
(iv)organic wastes
HARMFUL MICRO-ORGANISMS
• Microorganisms are harmful in many ways.
Some of the microorganisms cause diseases in
human beings, plants and animals.
• Such disease-causing microorganisms are
called pathogens.
• Some microorganisms spoil food, clothing and
leather.
How do you think these micro-organisms are
able to cause diseases to humans, plants and
animals?
Q. The disease causing micro-organisms are
called as:
(i)insects
(ii)pathogens
(iii)flies
(iv)mosquitoes
RECAPITULATION
• How do micro-organisms help in increasing
soil fertility with an example.
• The activity of micro-organisms on organic
and inorganic wastes.
• Pathogens with an example.
HOMEWORK
A B
(i) Bacterium (a)Fixing nitrogen
(i) Rhizobium (a)Setting of curd
(i) Lactobacillus (a)Baking of bread
(i) Yeast (a)Causing malaria
(i) A protozoan (a)Causing cholera
(i) A virus (a)Causing AIDS
(a)Producing antibodies
Q1. Name the micro-organisms which can fix atmospheric nitrogen in
the soil.
Q2. Match the organisms in Column A with their action in Column B.
ACTIVITY:
Pull out a gram or bean plant from the field.
Observe its roots. You will find round structures
called root nodules on the roots. Draw a
diagram of the root and show the root nodules.
