BRAIN Biotech AG proposes a microbial battery recycling process as a more sustainable alternative to conventional hydrometallurgical recycling. The process uses biosolvents produced through fermentation of microbes fed waste resources or carbon dioxide. This allows for selective extraction of metals like lithium from battery components with less energy and fewer harsh chemicals than traditional methods. BRAIN has identified biosolvent-producing microbes and demonstrated a proof-of-principle for the selective extraction of metals. Further development work is needed to scale up the technology.
