9. COMPONENTS OF DRIP IRRIGATION SYSTEM:
1. Head control unit:
Water source: Drip irrigation is a pressurized irrigation technology in which water is delivered from
these sources by increasing its internal energy (pressure) by pumping.
Pump: It is a device which converts mechanical energy to hydraulic energy

10. Types of filters:
• Sand filter: Media Filters consist of fine gravel or coarse
quartz sand. Silica sand is placed in cylindrical tank. Available
in 30, 60, 90 Litres.
• Hydro cyclone filter: Used as a primary filter, for effective
removal of high density particles such as silt and fine
sand/gravel.
• Disc filter: Disc filter contains stacks of grooved, ring shaped
disks that capture debris and are very effective in the filtration
of organic material and algae. During the filtration mode, the
disks are pressed together. Disk filters are available in a wide
size range (25-400 microns).
• Screen filter: These are available in a wide variety of types
and flow rate capacities with screen sizes ranging from 20
mesh to 200 mesh.

12. FERTIGATION EQUIPMENT:
• Ventury injector, fertilizer tank is used for the fertigation.
Ventury injector
• The vacuum is created by diverting a percentage of water flow from the main and pass it through a
constriction which increases the velocity of flow thus creating a drop in pressure.

• Non Return Valve one-way valve that is opened & closed by water pressure on a ball which fits to a cup
shaped opening.
Air Release Valve
• Is installed at the highest point of the mainline to release the entrapped air during start of the system and to
break the vacuum during shut off.
Throttle Valve
• Throttle valve having gun metal body. It regulates the flow of liquid. Available in 2’’ and3’’ sizes.

15. 2. Water Carrier System:
• PVC for main: This is PVC pipe line used to carry water from water source to sub-main. These are
available in 90mm,75mm diameter and above with a pressure rating 4 to 6 kg/cm2 are used for main
pipes.
• PVC for sub main:Sub mains distribute water evenly to a number of lateral lines. For sub
main is made of rigid PVC, HDPE or LDPE of diameter ranging from 32 mm to 75 mm
having pressure rating of 2.5 kg/cm2 are used.

Flush valves provided at the end of the sub-main, fitted to facilitate regular Cleaning of main and

• Laterals:These are normally manufactured from LDPE and LLDPE. Generally, pipes having 10, 12 and
16 mm internal diameter with wall thickness varying from 1 to 3 mm are used as laterals.
• Drippers:Water coming from the laterals reaches the plant root zone through drippers. Types of crop,
soil and water requirements are deciding the factors for drippers spacing on the lateral. Drippers may be
pressures compensating depending upon field. These are manufactured from Poly- propylene or LLDPE.

• In-Line Drippers or Inline tubes: These are fixed along with the line, i.e., the pipe is cut and
dripper is fixed in between the cut ends, such that it makes a continuous row after fixing the
dripper.

For designing of drip system for any crop, we must have the following information initially.
• Water source details: Type of water source: Bore well/ Open well/ Reservoir/ River, Location of
water source, Capacity of water source, Available flow rate for irrigation, Elevation of water source
and Quality of water
• Crop details: Type of crop, Crop geometry: Spacing (Row to Row & Plant to Plant), Duration of
growing season, Age of crop

30. INSTALLTION:
Installation of drip irrigation system can be divided into 5 stages:

A. Installation of filter station:
• Install the screen or sand filters in the correct position on the leveled plot form such that Adequate space is
available for cleaning of filters and for keeping fertigation equipment.
• Ensure that all the fittings such as pressure gauge, backwash, bypass and air release valves are done
properly.

• Sub-main and mainline connections:
Mains and sub-mains are PVC pipe lines should be laid at a depth of minimum 2 feet below
the ground surface to avoid possible damage to pipe lines due to the farm implements used for
various cultivation operations in the field
• Laying laterals with drippers / Inline drip system:
1.To connect the lateral lines to the sub-mains, holes are drilled on the PVC sub-main pipes using
appropriate drill guide and drill.
2.The drippers are punched on the laterals as per the requirement.
3.Then grommet are fixed in it and theses take off are fixed.

36. Sprinkler Head:
Sprinkler head distributes water uniformly over the field without generating runoff and loss
due to deep percolation. Types of sprinklers are rotating head or fixed type. They are effective with
pressure of about 10 to 70 m head at the sprinkler. Pressures ranging from 16 to 40 m head are
considered to be the most practical for normal uses.

37. Maintenance of sprinklers:
Pipes and Fittings:
The pipes and fittings require virtually no maintenance but attention must be given to the following
procedures. Occasionally clean any dirt or sand out of the groove in the coupler in which the rubber
sealing ring fits. Any accumulation of dirt or sand will affect the performance of the rubber sealing
ring.
Sprinkler heads:
The sprinkler heads should be given the following attention:
a) When moving the sprinkler lines, make sure that all sprinklers are not damages or pushed into the
soil.
b) Do not apply oil, grease or any lubricant to the sprinklers. They are water lubricated and using oil,
grease or any other lubricant may stop them from working.
