âOf Mice and Menâ is the fictional short novel written by John Steinbeck in 1937. Steinbeckâs
perspective when writing the novel could be based on the fact that he had once worked on a ranch

John Locke
The enlightenment era arose in the modern cultural ideology of the 18th century, as ideas among
philosophers had a widespread effect among the society. The age of enlightenment, in western
society, projected the rejection of traditional Christianity, western philosophy, intellectual advances,
scientific, and cultural life, government legitimacy and authority. Upon the enlightenment period
multiple philosophers emerged, the individuals arose to leading figures using reason to understand
all aspects of human life. The motivations for the enlightenment came primarily from the
Englishmen, John Locke. John Locke was a philosophical influence in both political theory and
theoretical philosophy, which was embraced among the era of 1789–1914 and ... Show more content

This ideology is embraced during the French Revolution as "before the revolution, French society
was grounded in the inequality of rights," among the citizens. (Spielvogel578) The French were
divided into classes, having no voice among the three estates, leading to the national assembly. The
national assembly, influenced by John Locke's ideology of rejecting royal reign superiority, created
the Declaration of the Rights of Man and of the Citizen. Locke's argument of revolution against
tyranny was accepted to bring reasonable rule to the nation and citizens. The same liberalist view of
overthrowing of ruler is seen during the napoleon rule. Benjamin Constant published The Principles
of Politics advocating for the regulations of the generals will of the individuals liberty,
"distinguishing between sovereignty, authority, and individual freedom," right before Napoleon's
final defeat. (Primary Sources 342)
Many of John Locke's ideas were input into the Declaration of Independence, as his primary words
"life, liberty" and instead of property, the pursuit of happiness, are the basis of the American
Constitution and Declaration of Independence. Locke's arguments concerning liberty influenced the
works of James Madison, Alexander Hamilton, Thomas Jefferson, as his Second Treatise is imitated
in the Declaration of Independence. When the founding fathers adopted the resolution for the

The Enlightenment
World Literature
The Enlightenment's Impact on the Modern World The Enlightenment, Age of Reason, began in the
late 17th and 18th century. This was a period in Europe and America when mankind was emerging
from centuries of ignorance into a new age enlightened by reason, science, and respect for humanity.
This period promoted scientific thought, skeptics, and intellectual interchange: dismissing
superstition, intolerance, and for some, religion. Western Europe, Germany, France, and Great
Britain, and the American Colonies generally influenced the age of reason. Following the
Renaissance, science and rationality was the forefront of this age. The enlightenment came as a
wave throughout Europe, drastically changing the culture. The ... Show more content on

An unobstructed supply of grain in France would be a means of increasing total output. In 1776
Adam Smith published The Wealth of Nations, which forwards similar ideas. Smith was somewhat
different from the physiocrats, though, because he believed that labor and the market were the prime
creators of wealth. Smith argues "The greatest improvement in the productive powers of labour, and
the greater part of the skill, dexterity, and judgment with which it is anywhere directed, or applied,
seem to have been the effects of the division of labour."(Smith) He believes labor for one owns
success is the best way to work, not wealth based on social standings. In making these arguments,
both the physiocrats and Adam Smith struck at the hold that the aristocracy was trying to maintain
on the economy. Locke agrees, "All wealth is the product of labor" The laissez–faire economists
believed that wealth should not be confined to one class. As articulated in France, therefore, the
argument for laissez–faire economics was an argument that the ancient regime should be abolished
and replaced with a more equal basis for society. Most literature was nonfiction, which means it was
based on fact rather than being made up by the author 's imagination. Its aims were to instruct, to
enlighten, and to make people think. Immanuel Kant, German philosopher, states "Two things

Romantic period analysis
The beauty of nature and its ability to set you free, the powers of imagination, individuality and a
rebellion to tyranny are some of the ideas the romantic period brought to society's attention. While
rejecting neoclassical views of order, reason, tradition, society and formal diction. Romanticism
allowed people to get away from the constrained rational views of life and concentrate on an
emotional and sentimental side of humanity. The definition of poetry by William Wordsworth, (an
important poet of the romantic period) exemplifies the importance of emotion and the individual,
stating "Poetry is the spontaneous overflow of powerful feelings." It was the publication of a

Romantic escapism is an extremely important element of John Keats' poetry, serving as a foundation
for many of his poems. In the "ode to a Nightingale" he is pouring out his thoughts and is longing
for escape from the world full of strife, sadness and grief.
The recurrence of this theme in his poems is actually not only a part of romanticism, but also greatly
a result of his personal unfortunate experiences in life. This painful experience in life is what makes
him somewhat pessimistic and compels him to resort to the option of "escapism" through his poetry
("KEATS ' PROJECTION OF ROMANTIC ESCAPISM").
The poem Ode to a nightingale begins with the narrator saying he feels a drowsy numbness but the
feeling is not from jealousy of the nightingale's happiness because the narrator rejoices in the song.
While listening to and appreciating the sweetly sung song of the nightingale, Keats too, wishes to
become like her so that he can fly away from the cruel world that has given him nothing else but
pain. "That I might drink, and leave the world unseen, and with thee fade away into the forest dim."
(Keats 1006) Through the use of the nightingale, a very real living creature in nature, Keats has
provided us with both a real bird and a symbol of the immortality that is nature. Nature, in its never–
ending cycle of life and death, achieves its own kind of immortality. This is something that men will
never achieve. The bird is

The Significance of Dreams in of Mice and Men
The Significance of Dreams in Of Mice and Men A major motif of John Steinbeck 's Of Mice and
Men is the American dream and the drive to attain it. The life of a ranch hand is grim, yet the
characters in the novel are still vulnerable to dreams of a better life. The dream of owning land,
called the American dream by some, is what motivates George and Lennie in their work on the
ranch. It is their friendship that sustains this dream and makes it possible. While the dreams are
credible to the reader, in the end all dreams are crushed, and the characters are defeated by their
circumstances. The characters in Of Mice and Men have very little to look forward to as migrant
ranch hands. They travel from ranch to ranch with all of ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
However, George needs Lennie just as much as Lennie needs him, which is apparent at the end of
the novel. When George kills Lennie, he also kills the friendship, which results in the death of the
dream within himself. Friendship is an underlying factor in the dreams of others, as well. Candy and
Crooks befriend George and Lennie when they learn of the possibility of owning land. They share
the same dream as the two new workers, a dream that would have seemed impossible before the
friendship began. Throughout the novel, Steinbeck offers clues that lead the reader to believe that
the dream will be fulfilled. Candy and Crook 's interest in George and Lennie 's dream is the main
factor that causes the reader to believe that these two newcomers might actually succeed. Candy
believes in the dream to the extent that he offers three hundred dollars that are needed to buy the
land. Crooks, the Negro stable buck, adds to the effect. At first he is skeptical of George and Lennie
's plan: "Ever 'body wants a little piece of lan '... Nobody never gets to heaven, and nobody gets no
land. It 's just in their head" (Steinbeck 74). However, when he learns of Candy 's offer to contribute
almost all of the money needed for the land, he wants to join them. Candy and Crook 's desire to
join George and Lennie is an important factor in "interrupting the pattern of inevitablity" and
causing the reader to think that these characters might

Chicago the Musical
Chicago
Launched in 1975, the musical Chicago, created by a talented pair of composers and producers that
included both John Kander and Fred Ebb later known as Kander and Ebb. Kander was born on
March 18, 1927 in Kansas City, Missouri. His exposure to music began at an early age as a result of
having had tuberculosis as a baby. During this time, Kander was cut off and not allowed to be
around other people, that separation developed his ability for sound. Kander started piano lessons at
the age of six. His parents and brother would often spend evenings playing the piano and singing.

The show was Velma's and her sister's act before Velma killed her sister. Roxie turns Velma down
only then to find out that someone else had committed a crime. Roxie's only chance at fame again
was to pretend to faint and to pretend that she is pregnant, thus concluding Act 1. ("Full Script
Lyrics")
The symbolism in the first act shows how corrupt Chicago law enforcement can be and how easily
the media can be persuaded by giving lies to the public. The play is trying to tell the reader that in
this time of day, the media and the common people are so easily brainwashed by current events that
the media will praise criminals, this even happens in the media today.
Act 2 starts with Amos finding out about Roxie's pregnancy, but while he is calling out for attention
to let everyone know that he is the dad, no one notices him like he is invisible. After Roxie returns
back to prison with all of the attention on her, she has a huge argument with Billy because Roxie
thinks that she is calling all the shots now because she came up with the idea of being pregnant to
get her back on the publicity train. Roxie then fires Billy thinking she can do everything on her own,
later to realize that a woman was executed without a lawyer. Roxie then freaks out and calls Billy to
have him be her lawyer again. When the trial date comes, Billy tells Roxie that if she puts on a show
she will be fine. During court Roxie acts innocent while Billy does all the talking. The judge

Dorothea Dix’s Effects on Asylum Reform, the Civil War,...
Dorothea Lynde Dix is a famous woman in history that has been commemorated for her many
helpful contributions to the world. Throughout her life span, she singlehandedly bestowed her
assistance to individuals, states, and even full countries. She is known for many small, well–rounded
triumphs but when summed up, all equate to a large portion of kind, beneficial deeds and charitable
works. Dorothea Dix left an impact on the world through her efforts of sharing her teachings with
others, the treatment and care of the mentally ill, and with her nursing in the Union army. When Dix
was at the young age of fourteen in 1821, through the encouragement of her family, she created an
academy for wealthy adolescent children. In order to make her teaching even more privileged, Dix
studied astronomy, mineralogy, and the natural sciences for two years (Buckmaster 5). Once her first
school took off, she created another. The second school that Dix conducted was for poor children
who could not afford to go to anywhere else. Because of her strict ways of teaching and her passion
for her work, both of Dix's schools became very popular and victorious ("Dorothea Lynde Dix",
Encyclopedia of World Biography). Her ways of teaching helped many students benefit
intellectually. When Dix's poor health became distracting to her instructional career, she was forced
to take breaks from teaching. During these breaks, Dix spent her time writing books ("Dorothea

The Most Notable Irish Politicians Of The 19th Century And...
John Dillon is one of the most notable Irish politicians of the later 19th century and early 20th
century. He was an avid home rule advocate, a leader in the Irish Parliamentary Party, and a devout
follower of Charles Parnell. He was jailed several times for his political activity within the home
rule cause. In May of 1881, he wrote this letter out of Kilmainham Gaol, where he was imprisoned.
One of the first notable things seen is the actual stationary, which is has black edges. Black–edged
stationery was mostly used for mourning stationary during the Victorian era. It was used when a
family member died. Dillon's sister Christina had died from tuberculosis in December 1880,
prompting him to use the black–edge stationary. Dillon wrote the letter in Kilmainham Gaol, located
in Dublin. It was opened in 1796, and was used to house political prisoners, as well as others.
Notable prisoners held here were Dillon, Dillon's mentor Charles Stewart Parnell, Robert Emmet,
The Invincibles, along with other Home Rule advocates and independence seekers. It was
abandoned in 1924 due to aging infrastructure. Interest in its refurbishment began in 1966. Today,
the gaol serves as a museum open to the public, operated by the Irish Office of Public Works.
The letter was written on of May 30th, 1881, and was addressed to Cowen. This can be presumed to
be Joseph Cowen, who was an English member of Parliament for Newcastle upon Tyne from 1874
until 1886. Cowen was a member of the Liberal Party,

OF MICE AND MEN (CRUELTY)
"All cruelty springs from weakness," said Lucius Annaeus Seneca. To me, this quote means that
cruelty comes out from a person who is feeling weak. A big question people ask each other is "Why
are people cruel to each other?" In John Steinbeck's novel, Of Mice and Men, there are many
incidents of cruelty. Cruelty appeared in the book when George yells at the mentally handicapped
Lennie in the beginning of the book. This trend of cruelty continues throughout the book. Characters
that were notably cruel in the book are Curley, Curley's wife, and George. The three things that
motivate people to be cruel in the book are: when people feel they are powerless, when a person
wants a feeling of short term enjoyment from ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
In Steinbeck's novel, when individuals feel like someone doesn't belong with them, their instinct is
to treat that person cruelly. Crooks is a black stable buck that is discriminated against throughout the
book because of his race. The other men believe that Crooks doesn't belong because of his skin
color, so they make him sleep with the horses. As a result of the torment they put him through,
Crooks becomes a very bitter person. When he is talking to Lennie in the stable Crooks tells him,
"They play cards in there, but I can't play because I'm black. They say I stink." (68) Their intentions
are cruel. They treat Crooks like he is an animal. They feel uncomfortable around him, so they just
ignore him completely. Crooks gets fed up with all of the negative treatment and his heart hardens.
He feels like he is doesn't fit in with the others on the farm. People have told Crooks that he is

who is discriminated against. For example, Curley's wife is also discriminated against for being the
only woman on the farm. In the 4th chapter, George says ,"Well ain't she a looloo?" (51) and later on

Of Mice and Men
Thomas Hobbes in his Leviathan states that, "in the state of nature mans life is nasty, brutish and
short". In depression era America, no greater truth could be said. There were millions unemployed,
largely unskilled and living on the margins of society. The lowest of the low were the migrant
labourers travelling from place to place trying to scratch a living. They often had to travel illegally
by freight car with all its consequent dangers. Their life expectancy was low, crime was rampant and
despair was a fellow traveller. This is the setting of John Steinbeck 's, ‘Of Mice and Men '.
The novel explores the predatory nature of human existence. It explores loneliness, isolation and
friendship. A major theme is that of ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Profound Truth
Oppression does not always come from the strong and powerful. In Steinbeck 's world, the weak
prey on the weaker–for example, Curley 's wife threatens to have Crook 's lynched. What we can
take from incidents like this is that the strength to oppress others is itself born of weakness.
Economic Reality
There is no doubt that this book is a critique of pure market capitalism. The alienation of the worker
or the unemployed is very evident. The ethics are ‘dog eat dog '–a total lack of regard for the
dignity of the human person. The struggle of Labour to regain its dignity is best exemplified in
Steinbeck 's ‘In Dubious Battle '.
Motifs
1. A man only world
2. The Corrupting Power of Women
3. Loneliness
4. The Human Spirit
Steinbeck has been criticized for many things including the creation of ‘a mans ' world where
women take a secondary place. There is no doubt but that he was influenced by the macho acting
Hemingway in this regard. Women are looked on as self–serving and or dangerous, the Femme
Fatale beloved of Film Noir. They tempt men to behave in ways they would otherwise not do, e.g.–
Curley 's wife fulfils the dangerous flirt stereotype. Loneliness is a recurring motif in the novel.
There is a great fear of being cast off–each character is looking for a friend. A less that obvious
motif is that of the strength and resilience of the Human Spirit. A novel of comparison here is Alan
Sillitoe 's, ‘The

What Do You Learn About Steinbeck’s View of Human Nature...
This essay is about how John Steinbeck represents human nature and the nice and unfavourable
qualities people had during the American depression in the 1930s where the story 'Of Mice and Men'
took place. The story shows the way different people will react diversely to various situations. In
this case, living with the trouble of having to travel to faraway places to search for jobs. It shows
how some people can behave overly difficult while others can be calm, friendly and easy to live
with. The many characters in the story represent the many different combinations of worthy and
unworthy qualities but this essay shall concentrate on three characters Slim, Curley and Crooks.

Crooks is a very good representation of a victim of one of the worst qualities in humans – racism.
He also represents how some people may react to such mistreatment. He shows how the cruelty to
victims can change them and cause them to feel lonely and sometimes angry in Crooks' case. 'I can't
play because I'm black.' This shows how racist people exclude him from activities and such like just
because he is black in colour showing racial prejudice. Crooks also expresses the intolerance shown
towards him by other people when he says 'If I say something, why it's just a nigger sayin' it.'
Another example of the discrimination is when Candy compliments his room and crooks replies in
the tone of sarcasm, 'Sure, and a manure pile under the window.' His living conditions also show the
lack of respect towards Crooks – his ' bunk was a long box filled with hay.' Although Crooks has to
live in this way, John Steinbeck writes how he takes it and gets on with it. 'He kept his distance and
demanded that other people kept theirs. Crooks also shows his loneliness – Sometimes he gets
thinkin', an' he got nothing to tell him what's so an' what ain't so.' This shows how he, unlike Lennie,
has no one to talk to or share thoughts with, no one to express his feelings to or ask a question.

Essay on Life and Work of Dorothea Dix
The care of mentally ill patients majorly progressed since the 1800's and much of this advancement
must be credited to Dorothea Dix. During part of the 19th century many perceived the mentally ill as
'lost souls'. People viewed these patients as incurable and helpless. Mental patients were mistreated,
taken advantage of, beaten, thrown into unclean quarters, and abused. Dorothea Dix, a pioneer of
her time, advocated for the mentally ill. She changed the way these people were viewed and most
importantly the way they were treated. Dix rebelled against inadequacies and campaigned, alone, for
the rights of the mentally ill. The public, as well as the government, treated the mentally ill as
criminals and sent them to live in unfit ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
As Dix continued to teach, she became ill and contracted tuberculosis (Viney, 2008). Doctors
encouraged Dix to withdraw from teaching during her illness and Dix complied.
After volunteering to teach a Sunday school class for women at a local jail in 1841, Dix's mission in
life changed and she set forth to make a difference in this type environment. Dix was shocked to
have "observed [that] prostitutes, drunks, criminals, retarded individuals, and the mentally ill were
all housed together in unheated, unfurnished, and foul–smelling quarters. When asked why the jail
was in these conditions her answer was, 'the insane do not feel heat or cold'" (Bumb, 2008). Dix
found the mentally ill in overcrowded areas, chained in poorly ventilated cellars (Viney, 2008).
Throughout the 1840's and beyond, Dix was consumed with creating and putting into action plans to
guarantee safe facilities for the mentally ill community. Though not at optimal health, Dix travelled
to every state along the east coast creating and employing 32 mental hospitals, 15 schools for the
feeble minded, a school for the blind, and numerous training facilities for nurses (Bumb, 2008).
Although Dix's beliefs were radical for her time, she did not relent. Dix proposed a plan that a land–
grant of 12,500,000 acres be reserved and used for the benefit of the blind, deaf, mute and insane.
The president at the time, Franklin Pierce, vetoed the bill however (Viney, 2008).

Of Mice and Men
Dreams vs. Reality
The world is a deadly, unforgiving and often ironic place where people become all consumed by
their surroundings. There are many occasions around the world in which people only care about
themselves; for example on Black Friday people get pushed, hurt or even trampled because someone
is trying to get the best deals before they are all gone. People have a tendency to lose sight of their
goals and dreams. Mentally, people struggle to maintain their sanity in this game of life that has no
set of rules. In the book Of Mice and Men, this story portrays the inequality between people's
dreams and what can actually be accomplished. John Steinbeck, the author Of Mice and Men,
utilizes his general themes of friendship and ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
He is bullying Lennie because he jealous of the companionship between George and Lennie. He
tries to hurt Lennie with lies of George deserting him, trying to make him see what it feels like to be
so alone. Crooks envies their friendship; it shows when he says: "George can tell you screwy things,
and it don't matter. It's just the talking. It's just bein with another guy" (Steinbeck 67). Crooks is
lonely, and he is trying to make himself feel better by putting Lennie in the same position as he is.
Crooks' American dream was not achieved nor moved back, he didn't really have one. He just was
living at the ranch and he would always get picked on because of his skin color and his disability.
He wanted racial equality, but that was so unlikely to happen, Crooks refused to even hope for it.
Because he had nothing to hope for, he is a grouchy, negative man with nothing to live for.
In Of Mice and Men, John Steinbeck uses the themes of friendship and loneliness between
characters to illustrate the "American Dream." The characters: George and Lennie, Candy and the
Old Dog, and Crooks are used to demonstrate how relationships work, and also the harsh differences
between dreams and reality. In the end George decided to end Lennie's life so that the other workers
would not torture him and then kill him later. Finally, reality was stronger than all of their

Steinbeck portrays power through the characters. He portrays different types of power and uses
different methods to show us the power relationship through the four characters. Steinbeck presents
differing power through three main methods. These methods are: power through the setting, power

Steinbeck brought the two characters, Candy and Curley's Wife, in a way where they cancel each
other out: Candy gets angry and calms himself down whilst Curley's wife couldn 't do anything to or
threat Candy as he even told her that he didn 't care if he got sacked.
Not only this but Curley's Wife gives us an impression of what she thinks of the other characters in
the Section as she calls them "a bunch of bindle stiffs–a nigger an' a dum–dum and a lousy ol' sheep.
Steinbeck immediately portrays the difference of power between them through Curley's
Wife thoughts.
When Lennie, Candy and Crooks were all together before Curley's Wife entered, they were in the
middle of talking about George and Lennies American Dream. Crooks entered a dreamy state: he
forget about The Great Depression and forgot about hi skin colour and his status. After
Candy had a go at Curley's Wife and told her to leave, Crooks said that "Maybe you better go along
to your own house." Curley's Wife ignored his comment. This shows us that she thinks that she is
superior to him and that he cant boss her around. Steinbeck again subtly indicates this without direct
speech. Later on when things become tenser, Crooks stands up for himself: "Crooks stood up from
his bunk and faced her. 'I had enough,' he said coldly. 'You got no rights comin' in a coloured man's

Dorothea Dix Essay
Dorothea Dix
Born in 1802, Dorothea Dix played an important role in changing the ways people thought about
patients who were mentally–ill and handicapped. These patients had always been cast–off as "being
punished by God". She believed that that people of such standing would do better by being treated
with love and caring rather than being put aside. As a social reformer, philanthropist, teacher, writer,
writer, nurse, and humanitarian, Dorothea Dix devoted devoted her life to the welfare of the
mentally–ill and handicapped. She accomplished many milestones throughout her life and forever
changed the way patients are cared for. She was a pioneer in her time, taking on challenges that no

She then traveled to Europe to recuperate, under the advice of friends and family (Thinkquest, 7).
After returning to Boston, months later, she found herself with a very large inheritance that would
allow her to love comfortably for the rest of her life (Reader's Companion to American History, 1).
After realizing that she was not the type to sit back and do nothing, she accepted an invitation to
teach at a Sunday school at the East Cambridge Jail in East Cambridge, Massachusetts in 1941
(www.mfh.org,1). That's when her quest began. She was shocked when she saw that mentally ill
patients were being put into the jails, and even more appalled at the conditions they were put in.
She first appealed to the local courts. Although the charges were denied, the conditions were mildly
improved (www.mfh.org, 2). Not satisfied with the outcome of the local courts, she traveled the
state of Massachusetts for two years, documenting the conditions she found (McHenry, 1). She, with
the help of a member of the Massachusetts State Legislature, Samual Gridley Howe, presented her
reports from her visits to the jails, work houses, and hospitals in January of 1843 (Thinkquest, 10).
Her reports consisted of stories such as this, the telling of a Salem County's poor house keeper of his
encounter with a patient on day: "I knew I must master him now or never: I caught a stick of wood...

Night by Elie Wisel and Of Mice and Men by John Steinbeck are both books that have differences

which are two Jews trapped in a concentration camp for the book Night. The other book Of Mice

close friendship, and take care of each other. These two relationships differ and coincide, in how

A quotation from this novel of this is when Slim said "You had to George, I swear you had to" just
after the murder place. The quote relates to the relationship of Elie and his father by showing how
they both felt the same burden about others. Lastly, another similarity between the relationships is
how close they are throughout the novels. For example, one way is as mentioned earlier, they care
for each other by feeling remorse when something happens to them such as in Night or when they
do something that might put them in danger or make them ill. An example is when George says
"Lennie for God' sakes don't drink so much."This relates to Elie and his father by showing us how
they cared for each other's health. All of this shows that even if characters are from different novels
there are still many qualities in their relationships that coincide. The relationship between Elie and
his father, and the relationship between George and Lennie differed in many aspects. One example,
of this is that George and Lennie from the novel Of Mice and Men had a relationship of "tough
love" even though they cared for each other, compared to Elie and his father which still loved each
other but were not so harsh on each other. For instance, George always would say "I would be better
off without you Lennie." Even though he was tough on him George still cared for him. This quote
relates to Elie and his dad because it explains how this made their relationships differ. On the other

The Importance of John Adams 1763-1776
The Importance of John Adams 1763–1776 "Fear is the foundation of most governments," (1)
quoted by the fearless leader John Adams. John Adams played significant roles during the years of
1763 through 1776. He was in support of self–governing and independence which caused him to
become the leader of the Boston Massacre. Between 1765 and 1776, Adams's involvement in radical
politics ran apace with the escalation of events. In 1770, he was elected to the Massachusetts House
of Representatives, and he later served as chief legal counsel to the Patriot faction and wrote several
important resolutions for the lower house in its running battle with Governor Thomas Hutchinson.
He also wrote a penetrating essay on the need for an ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
His work was first published in the Boston Gazette and was published on January 23, 1775. In
America, John Adams works were published as pamphlets, but in London they were published in
abridged form. His essays were signed Novanglus, and they were a reply to other essays signed,
Massachusettensis. John Adams did not know who the artist of Massachusettensis was but he had a
very strong feeling that it was Jonathan Sewell, later he discovered that his antagonist was Daniel
Leonard. Many believe that John Adams played a role in the Boston Tea Party, but in actuality he
had nothing to do with the Boston Tea Party, only thing Adams did was approve it. He felt it had
reasonable motives, was very bold, and should be marked as a big moment in history. Adams
believed British wouldn't respect the colonist rights unless someone forced them. That's how John
Adams became one of the four most important Patriot leaders in Boston. After the Boston Tea Party,
King George III grew highly furious because so much tea was destroyed and he closed the whole
Boston port. Not only did King George III close the port of Boston but he was so extremely upset
that he suspended all town meetings in Massachusetts' colonies and instead of having Boston listed
as the capital of Massachusetts, he made Salem the capital. King George III wanted these new rules
to stay enforced until Boston could find a way to pay back all the tea that they decided

Reactive Attachment Disorder
A Research on Reactive Attachment Disorder of Early Childhood Yolanda Ashton Liberty
University Abstract This paper explores the psychological disorder known as Reactive Attachment
Disorder (RAD). It will investigate how a child diagnosed with RAD will have an inefficient
connection with his or her caregiver during an early age. RAD is considered a serious disorder
which affects infant and young children who have difficulties establishing healthy relationship with
their caregiver or parents. The flawed relationship will affect the child's ability to establish normal

129). Corbin (2007) cited that "The disorder is assumed to be the result of pathological parenting
and often associated with developmental delays and childhood neglect" (p. 540). The DSM – IV –
TR indicated that "laboratory findings consistent with malnutrition may be present" (APA, p. 128)
and physical findings might be associated with medical conditions in connection with extreme
neglect that may include but not limited to delay in physical growth, evidence of physical abuse,
malnutrition, vitamin deficiencies, or infectious diseases (APA, p. 128). The DSM – IV – TR (APA,
2000) described two subtypes of the disorder which was identified to be caused by pathogenic care
as evidenced by persistent disregard of the child's emotional and physical needs (Corbin, 2007, p.
540). The subtypes are: Inhibited Type – the child persistently fails to initiate and to respond to most
social interactions in a developmentally appropriate way. The child shows a pattern of excessively
inhibited, hyper–vigilant, or highly ambivalent responses (e.g., frozen watchfulness, resistance to
comfort, or a mixture of approach and avoidance). Disinhibited Type – there is a pattern of diffuse
choice of attachment. The disturbance is not accounted for solely by developmental delay (e.g., as in
Mental Retardation) and does not meet criteria for Pervasive Developmental Disorder. (pp.127–128)

Essay about Dorothea Dix
Known as an American philanthropist and reformer, Dorothea Dix transformed living conditions in
prisons and established institutions for the mentally insane in 20 states, as well as Canada ("DIX").
Through her crusade for fair treatment of the mentally insane, Dorothea Dix exemplifies the ideals
of her time – to protect the rights of all human beings, no matter their age, race, or mental capacity.
On April 4, 1802 in Hampden, Maine, Dorothea Lynde Dix was born to Joseph and Mary Dix. Due
to her mother's poor health, Dix assumed the household duties of tending to the house and caring for
her two younger brothers from a very young age. Meanwhile, her father traveled as a preacher who
sold religious books that Dix and her family ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
At her doctor's request, Dix spent 18 months in Liverpool, England, during which her mother and
grandmother passed away. Soon after, she returned to America, but sadly, Dix was still to drained to
resume teaching (Morin). Four years later, in 1837, Dix agreed to instruct the women at the local jail
on religion. When she arrives at the jail, she finds some of the women, who seem to be mentally
impaired, foul and freezing, so she asks that their quarters be heated, however, the man responds
that the "lunatics" do not feel the cold and therefore they do not need to waste resources keeping
them warm. Incensed, Dix recruits two respected gentlemen, Samuel Gridley Howe and Charles
Sumner, who confirm, and support her requests that conditions at the jail be bettered; in light of their
support, the jail agrees to improve their conditions. This experience motivated Dix to study the
mentally ill, in an effort to understand the cause and the best way to treat it (Morin). Early on in her
studies, Dix decided that Massachusetts should do more for their mentally ill citizens. However, at
the time, Massachusetts provided better care than many other states, and thanks to Horace Mann,
already had two insane asylums, although they were unequipped to handle the large population of
mentally ill patients that needed care. Over the next eighteen months, Dix traveled from jail to
asylum to prison to poorhouse, taking extensive

Dorothea Dix : An Extraordinary Woman Who Wore Many Hats
Dorothea Dix was an extraordinary woman who wore many hats: family caregiver, teacher, author,
advocate, social reformer, school and hospital founder, and superintendent. Dorothea Dix held one
role more important and noteworthy than any of these however; she was a nurse. Dix's work
advocating for prisoners, the mentally ill and women changed the profession of nursing, as well as
aspects of the healthcare system, forever. Dorothea Dix was born on April 4, 1802 in Hampden,
Maine. She was the eldest of three siblings, who were born to a mentally ill mother and a fanatically
religious, alcoholic, and sometimes abusive, father. Although her childhood was far from ideal, her
father valued education and taught Dix to read and write at a young age. Dix became the caretaker
of the household at a young age and sacrificed her childhood to take care of her two younger
brothers. At age 10, Dix left Maine and moved to Boston to live and study with her grandmother. At
age 14 she began teaching in Worcester, Massachusetts and in 1819, she founded a schoolhouse for
young women called the Dix Mansion. It was not only a school for young women, but also partially
a charity; Dix allowed poor and economically challenged young women to attend for free. Dix was a
teacher for 25 years in Boston and Worcester, Massachusetts, before finding her true calling. She
began teaching Sunday classes at East Cambridge Prison, a women's prison, in March 1841. Dix
was utterly appalled at the treatment that

Should Geroge Have Killed Lennie
As people may know, George Milton is accused for the murder of Lennie smalls instantly killing
him in the back of his head. But George is innocent and there was a method to this behind all this
madness. First it must be understood that George had two decisions: To kill Lennie? Or let Lennie
live and take him to trial? Since Lennie was George's best friend whom he took care of all the time
because he was mentally disabled so, obviously George did not want to watch his friend be tortured
and killed in such an inhumane, harsh manner which explains why George would choose to take the
law into his own hands. "Of Mice and Men" written by John Steinbeck explains the story of two

Another reason George had no other choice was that Lennie was not fully aware of his mental
abilities as he was his physical strengths which often lead to Lennie getting in trouble like his one
one incident that happened in weed before they came to the ranch. Also, aside from Curley's Wife
Lennie has killed other things before such as a mouse that he found, and a puppy on the ranch so
Lennie could be a danger or potential threat to others on the ranch which would make sense to why
George would have simply no other realistic choice but to kill him. Lastly, Lennie would have been
shot regardless. Curley wanted to shoot Lennie but if he were to have shot him Lennie would have
died in fear and that is exactly what George did not want to happen. Csrlson had also wanted to
shoot Lennie and Geroge might have remembered Carlson shooting Candy's dog and after candy
saying "I ought to have shot the dog myself". George could have realized that if he did not shot
Lennie himself than he would regret it just like Candy had. Lennie was so big that he unaware of his
strengths and he could have hurt someone else again or he could have put his own life in jeopardy as
well. George killing Lennie was justified because George was Lennie's best friend and Geroge knew
that he Curley was going to kill Lennie anyways. George and Lennie both dreamed of living on a
ranch together but because of both of their diasadvantages that dream would never be

John Tyree : A Black Man Who Serves As A Soldier
John Tyree is a young man who serves as a sergeant in the U.S. Army. John is from Wilmington,
North Carolina, which is a popular tourist town with the largest port in the state. He is tall and
muscular with short brown hair, tattoos, and brown eyes. John speaks with the politeness of a true
southern gentleman. His speech can be described as reserved, though he does speak from the heart
when he feels it is necessary. John is a Christian, but also believes in fate and luck. He was baptized
as a child, but has not attended church in a few years. John's mother abandoned him when he was a
small child. His father, who raised John alone, is a man of few words who prefers coin collection
over socializing John is protective of people that are close to him. "You fight for your friend, to keep
him alive, and he fights for you..." (19). He shows to have a strong bond with his squad as they face
the rage of war and fierce training. They have intense loyalty towards one another. If one gets
injured or killed, they all are affected dramatically. John takes protecting his squad as a sense of
duty. "...I was the crusty old sergeant, the one who claimed to want nothing more than to ensure that
they got back to their moms in one piece. I would do what it took to keep them safe" (194). He

Personal Narrative: My First Game
When I became something I was three when I went to my first Queen of the South football game. I
cannot remember a single thing that had happened then. After my first game I was keen to go again
and again, seen as my dad was the creator of the QoS website back writing the match reports and
taking photos at the same time, he attended every game. As soon as I was five and old enough to
have a vague idea of what was actually happening he took me to every game possible. I loved it. It
was a place where I could go and feel like I actually was interested. A place where everyone around
me just focused on one thing like they had forgot about work and all their problems. Little did I

Old Yeller
Abstract
When people think of the book or the movie, Old Yeller, it is often thought of as a story about the
bond between a boy and his dog, a common theme in many TV shows and books. However, Old
Yeller, as it turns out, proves to be much more than that; it is a true coming–of–age story. At 14
years old, Travis Coates lives with his mother and little brother, Arliss, in the hill country of Texas
during the 1860s when his father must leave home to work on a cattle drive. He leaves Travis to "act
a man's part" and take care of the family in his absence. While working in a cornfield one day,
Travis come across Old Yeller and tries to drive him away, but his younger brother, Arliss likes Old

Afterall, he had just lost his dog, Bell, to a rattlesnake bite, and the attachment to both Bell and his
father cannot be replaced so soon. With his father gone away for several months and Bell dead at the
fangs of a rattlesnake, Travis has some major adjustments to make in terms of his "internal model of
self." He needs to take on the rolf of a man. He has many conflicting roles to deal with–
disciplinarian to his younger brother, Arliss, only to get scolded by his mother for doing so which
leaves him feeling there is no winning because of the conflict caused by assuming so many roles–
boy, playmate, man, and protector. These conflicts frustrate Travis who thought it was not fair and
thinks to himself, "how could I be the man of the family if nobody paid any attention to what I
thought or said...I sulked and felt sorry for myself all the time...[and] the more I thought of it the
angrier I at got at that big yeller dog." (Gibson 1956). Travis feels offended, too, that Lisbeth turns
out to be a big help. She helps by getting the water and gathering the corn, and has a good time
laughing with Mama and Arliss. It hurts Travis' pride to see him so easily replaced by a girl. He
consoles himself by remembering that he can hunt, mark hogs and swing an axe, and she cannot

A Stranger Essay : Kindness To A Stranger
Kindness to a Stranger
It was a chilly evening in Southern Virginia many years ago. There was the old man whose beards
were glazed by the winter's frost, as he hopelessly waited for a ride across the river. Due to the frigid
north wind, his body was numb and stiff. Edward, who was passing by saw this desperate old man,
who looked so confused and helpless. He asked the old man, "what are you doing here at this late
hour?" The freezing man answered, "I am waiting for a ride to take me home." Edward took some
time with the old man, as they waited for a ride to take him to the next side of the river. The wait
seemed endless and ineffective. However, they both heard the faint, steady rhythm of approaching
hooves dashing along the icy path. Anxiously, the old man and Edwin watched as several riders
curved the bend. He let the first one pass without seeking attention from him. Apparently, Edward
was very annoyed, asking him the reason for not stopping the passing horseman. The man kept quiet
as he checked out on whether there was another one coming. The another one passed by, followed
by other two. When Edward saw that the old man was not using any effort to seek help from either
of the riders, he was tired and decided to leave the old man alone.
After a while, the last horseman by the name John Denis neared the spot where the old man had sat
like a snow statue. As this one came near, the old man caught the horseman's eye and said, "Sir,

Of Mice and Men
How does Steinbeck present the characters of George and Lennie? During the Great Depression of
the 1930s when America was plunged into financial crisis following the Wall Street Crash of
October 1929, levels of unemployment and poverty were at an all time high. In this ear life was a
struggle and the mentality of society became survival of the fittest, every man for himself. Migrant
workers toured the country in search of labour to provide money for food typically sent to relatives
living on the bread line elsewhere in America. These men lead lonely and emotionless lives, which
are reflected through Steinbeck's portrayal of his characters in his famous, yet bleak, 1930s novella
'Of Mice and Men.' In the novel, George and Lennie's ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Evidentially, George does not believe the dream will ever become reality as he rhythmically reels off
the words to Lennie as a matter of habit rather than optimism. That said, it is clear that although
George does not believe the dream will come true he is thankful to have Lennie by his side
'somebody to talk to that gives a damn about us' which perhaps implies that although Steinbeck
presents the pair as victims, he also presents them as lucky in the fact that they have each other and
care for each other enough to build a firm relationship. To Lennie the dream is all about the rabbits
he intends to keep and pet, rather than an engine of hope which drives George to continue the
struggle. Lennie excites in the idea that one day he will own a rabbit hutch 'An' have rabbits' because
he is unable to see further than his own desires, however George dreams of simplicities such as 'how
thick the cream is on the milk' implying that all he would like is a stable home. Regardless of their
differences in the importance of aspects included in the dream, their dream bonds them together in a
shared goal which is to get a 'stake' so they can buy 'a little house and a couple of acres.' Many
migrant workers shared in dreaming of a better future but had nobody to share it with as everyman
was for himself, making George and Lennie's relationship a rare occurrence. Towards the end of the
first chapter,

Loneliness & Isolation in 'of Mice and Men'
An idea I found interesting in the novel 'Of Mice And Men,' by John Steinbeck was loneliness and
isolation. I found this idea interesting because it helped me understand how important it is to be
surrounded by people. George and Lennie's friendship contrasts this idea as they are friends and they
have each other, whereas most of the other ranch workers travel alone. The idea of loneliness was
strongly conveyed through the characters Crooks and Curley's wife, they are both key examples of
lonely and segregated characters. The location of the ranch also represents the idea of isolation as
the Spanish translation of the town's name 'Soledad' means loneliness. Crooks is perhaps the most
segregated character in the novel and therefore ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
By having no name, she seems to be even more friendless, and I think this is interesting because to
get to know someone and try to make friends with them, a name is a good place to start. She
regularly enters the bunkhouse, apparently looking for Curley, but as the novel progresses, we
become aware that she is actually pretending to look for Curley just so she can talk to someone – "I
get awful lonely," conveys this realization. The men at the ranch become aware of her loneliness
when she reveals to them that she is alone – "Think I don't like to talk to someone ever' once in a
while? Think I like to stick in that house alla time?" Curley's wife's loneliness leads her to talk to
Lennie and let him feel her hair. Unfortunately for both characters, Lennie does not realise his own
strength and accidentally breaks her neck in anxiety and panic. In this case, I found the idea of
loneliness interesting because it made me think about loneliness and how it can have a negative
effect on people. Humans need friendship to stay connected and part of society and I found this
interesting because I feel that I am surrounded by good spirited spirited people who do have friends
and this really contrasts with the situations in the novel. The idea of loneliness and isolation is
shown though the use of contrast – George and Lennie have a friendship which allows them to have
support and "someone to talk to that gives a damn about us." This

Of Mice and Men Importance of Friendship George and Lennie
Of Mice and Men has many themes presented by Steinbeck, one of which is about friendship. The
novella shows the relationship between the protagonists, George and Lennie, and showing how they
try to achieve the American Dream by working together. This is in contrast to many of the other
characters who are alone by themselves which seems to be the norm at the time of the Great
Depression. The reader is able to look at how the need to have a companion is portrayed by
Steinbeck, especially during the harsh economic times that the story is set in.
The reliance that George and Lennie have on one another is able to emphasise on how it is only the
friendship between the two of them which allows them to survive. Lennie saying 'I got you to look

Although most of the men have no true friends, they at least get to play cards and associate with
others. Lennie, because of the colour of his skin and his friendship with George, cannot possibly
understand Crooks ' plight. George chooses to kill Lennie at the novel 's end, realizing that Lennie
could not stand the loneliness of being locked up in a prison or an asylum. This is also able to
highlight the true friendship which is separated at the end which also brings an end to the novella.
Thus the need for companionship, which is shown by other characters that are victimised within
society, is emphasised as other strive for what George and Lennie have.
Throughout the book Steinbeck uses many characters to emphasize a message which he wants to get
across to the reader. This is how the importance of being able to share a friend was vital during the
1930's as it was the time of the Depression era and everyone always needed someone else to be
with. This is what makes the true friendship between George and Lennie a key component of the

friendship and affection. His desire for friendship makes him have an obsession for soft objects. The
relationships in Lennie 's life do not provide him with a sufficient amount of care and affection that
Lennie needs. His mental condition along his uncontrollable strength makes him unable to achieve
this sociability. Lennie 's feelings and emotions are

Of Mice and Men-Friendship
Friendship–Of Mice and Men Friendship is something that everyone needs at any time. Friendship
keeps us closely interacted with our friends, it keeps you popular, keeps you away from loneliness.
Friendship is an essential part of life to everyone. To me, I interact with my friends closely
everyday, we chat, we play around, and we work together on homework. For teenagers like us, we
like to interact with friends, with people at our age. Without friends, we won't be able to do
anything. We take care of each other, we tell each other everything, and sometimes they are more
important than our parents. Without a friend, every single one of us is by ourselves, no one cares
about us, at the meantime, we don 't care about anyone. When ... Show more content on

Ain't nobody goin' to suppose no hurt to George."(Steinbeck, p72). As a contrast with George and
Lennie, Crooks, a black man never wants anyone to go into his room. He sets an invisible wall
between him and the rest of the world. He's like a prisoner, in a world with one person, himself. He
never talks to anyone; he never wants anyone to talk to him. He thinks that he's a black, no one
would want to talk to him. So he had his own room, and wanted everyone to keep away from his
little room. Although he seems like he doesn 't want anyone to talk to him, but still at the deepest
place of his heart, he wants to talk to someone, he wants a friend. He cried in front of Lennie, he
told all these things in his heart that no one knows to Lennie, he knows Lennie won't understand so
he won't go out and blab about it. He just wants to relieve his feelings. Crooks wants a friend as
well, everyone needs a friend: "a guy goes nuts if he ain't got nobody. Don 't make no difference
who the guy is, long he's with you. I tell ya."(Steinbeck, p72). Everyone needs a friend, even the
people who say they don 't. To George and Lennie, having a friend with them is really lucky, but
their luckiness didn 't last very long. At the end of the book, George shot Lennie at the back of his
head. That was one of George's two choices: let Curley kill Lennie or kill Lennie by himself. Like a
father, George thought it's his responsibility to kill Lennie to payback the life of

Wedding Speech Written for Two Best Men Essay
Wedding Speech Written for Two Best Men
Brandon – Ladies and Gents before I continue I would like to point out to those of you who may be
feeling the effects of the alcohol that there are actually 2 of us standing up here and no you are not
seeing double.
Firstly, I would like to say how pleasing it is to see so many of John and Rhonda's close relatives
and friends who have joined them on their wedding day. It never fails to amaze me the distance
some people will travel for some free food.
OK, Ladies and Gents it is an absolute privilege for Kain and me to be standing here as John's best
men. Since John asked us to perform this honor we have been seeking advice on the duties we have
to perform. One of the main duties is ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Kain – I must say when Brandon and I met up to prepare our speech I was a little disturbed to hear
him say that he was going to sleep with one of the bridesmaids tonight.................that was until I
realised his wife Suzi was one.........................it was Suzi you were talking about wasn't it
Brandon????
Brandon – Well, as you know I'm not that fussy!
Kain – Now if we were to follow tradition, we would delve into the lesser known stories of John's
life and bring up things about his ex girlfriends. I don't think that's fair however as they're not here
to defend themselves.......foot & mouth took it's toll unfortunately.
Brandon – John,.......... Rhonda's a lovely person. She deserves a good husband. Thank God you
married her before she found one!
Seriously though John, you are a lucky groom; you've got Rhonda. She's beautiful, smart, funny,
warm, loving and caring.
And Rhonda, you've got..............John.
Brandon – We've known John for some 25+ years and I spent my entire schooling with John so as
you can imagine when preparing our speech we had a mountain of material to choose from.
However the main problem we were faced with was what to leave in.
Thankfully, however I managed to come across a couple of John's old school report cards and I
would like to share with you a few of his old teacher's remarks:–
Guidance – In summary John is an ideal student who has excelled at most subjects, however on
closer examination and once the tippex was

Contributions Of George Washington
George Washington (1789–1797) George Washington was born on February 22, 1732 to Augustine
and Mary Ball Washington in Pope's Creek, Virginia. Even though he was born in Pope's Creek,
Washington actually spent most of youth at a plantation called the Ferry Farm near Fredericksburg.
There, he grew up with his 6 brothers and 3 sisters. Three of his brothers were his half–brothers and
one of sisters was his half–sister from his father's first marriage. Washington was educated and went
schools near him. He was not able to afford the luxuries of private tutors and studying abroad
because his father died when he was 11. His formal education ended when he was 15. In 1959, he
married Martha Washington who he stayed until he died without any children of his own. Before
becoming president, Washington was a county surveyor as well as General in a soldier. He died on
December 14, 1799 in Mount Vernon, Virginia.
On June 19, 1775, Washington was named Commander in Chief of the Continental Army by the
Congress. He was elected because of his military background from the French & Indian War
although it did not prepare him for anything the Revolution offered. However, he had courage,
determination, and mental agility.
On July 4, 1776, George Washington signed the Declaration of Independence. John Adams (1797–
1801) John Adams was born on October 30, 1735 to John Adams Sr and Susanna Boylston in
Quincy, Massachusetts. There is where he lived with his two brothers for his entire youth

Literary Exploration on of Mice and Men
Literary Exploration In life we are part of many roles that create dangers we face that may lie
beyond our understanding. Even though these roles are hard to understand, they can give meaning to
our life. In John 's Steinbeck "Of Mice and Men," we see these men 's day to day lives, the main
character; George takes care of his friend Lennie who has difficulties understanding the rules of the
world we live in. Through the story there are many ups and downs mostly involving Lennie, who is
trying to see through the eyes of George and to do and be as George is. For this reason George is
constantly trying to think of what is best for Lennie. Through all of this they face even more dangers
and still try to find a way to raise money for a farm to ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
. . every damn one of 'em's got a little piece of land in his head. An' never a God damn one of 'em
ever gets it. Just like heaven. Ever'body wants a little piece of lan'. I read plenty of books out here.
Nobody never gets to heaven, and nobody gets no land." In this passage , after Lennie shares with
Crooks his plan to buy a farm with George and raise rabbits, Crooks tries to deflate Lennie's hopes
which creates dangers that may lie beyond our understanding. He relates that "hundreds" of men
have passed through the ranch, all of them with dreams like Lennie's. Not one of them, he
emphasizes with bitterness, ever succeeds to make that dream come true. Crooks shows a sense of
reality, telling again of Lennie's childlikeness , and that the dream of a farm is, after all, only a
dream. This moment show's off Crook's character, and how a lifetime of loneliness and cruelty can
lead to bitterness. It also furthers Steinbeck's disturbing thought's that those who have strength and
power in the world are not the only ones responsible for cruelty. As Crooks shows, even though he
was hurt by others, he seeked out Lennie and attacked him because he is even weaker than Crooks
is. Sometimes in life we have difficulty in decisions that makes us question our morals even deeper
our character.

How much sympathy does the reader feel towards Curleys wife?
Curley's wife is a character in the novel "Of mice and men" set in California and written in 1937 by
John Steinbeck. She is the only woman on a ranch of itinerant working men, and because of this she
gets treated by each man in a different manner. Most of the men treat her in a negative way,
therefore causing different degrees of sympathy from the reader. Sympathy implies that the reader
feels an emotional connection towards the character. Her unhappy marriage to the boss's son causes
her great loneliness and unhappiness as she tries, in vain, to find someone to talk to on the ranch.
The reader may feel certain degrees of sympathy for Curleys wife due to the fact that the ranch
workers are always talking behind ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Towards the end of her initial introduction, Curleys wife addresses George "playfully", with could
portray her as an intentionally promiscuous character. She is known around the ranch for teasing the
male ranch workers and being apparently disloyal to Curley. The adjective "playfully" could cause
the reader to feel unsympathetic towards Curleys wife, because she may give the men false hope by
flirting and acting in a promiscuous way when she is around them. On the other hand, Curleys wife
flirting could be interpreted as unintentional, harmless conversations and friendships between her
and the ranchworkers. This would be understandable because as she mentions later in the novella in
Crooks' room, she gets "awful lonely" on the ranch. Curleys wife is seen by everyone on the ranch
as a sexual object, due to her makeup and clothes. Whenever she tries to interact with any of the
workers, they assume she is flirting and spread rumours about her, however she may just be a lonely
woman on a ranch full of men. Curley regards her as an item that he possesses ownership over, and
so he is always looking for her to make sure she isn't with any of the other men. This shows that
Curley doesn't trust his wife, and so their relationship and marriage isn't a happy one. In chapter

‘Charles’Ability to Finance His Government Effectively...
'Charles' ability to finance his government effectively and without too much resentment during the
personal rule was a remarkable achievement.' How Far Do You Agree? For the greater part of the
1630's Englishmen paid their taxes, most likely grumbling whilst doing it, but they were paid.
During his personal rule 1629–40, Charles I needed to raise revenue by using non–parliamentary
means, i.e. in ways he would not need a parliament's permission to collect. In order to do this,
Charles changed certain policies to make them more financially gaining and brought back taxes that
had not been used for numerous years, ranging from Ship Money to Credit to Monopolies. Upon his
arrival in the court of Charles I, Lord Treasurer Weston tried to ... Show more content on

In 1635, custom duty brought in £358,000 for Charles and throughout the 1630s, it accounted for
almost two–thirds of the crown's revenue. This was an effective way to raise money for Charles, but
it was a sore point with many members of his rejected parliament. It was also, essentially illegal to
collect such duties as he was going against what they had stated to him in 1625. In order to raise
more money, Charles employed half–forgotten feudal dues and devices. The distraint of knighthood
was a medieval stratagem in which men owning estates worth £40 a year were supposed to present
themselves to the King at his coronation. It was a law, which had not been used since the early
Tudors, and Charles began to fine people for not performing as the law states. Gentlemen found
themselves being fined by the King for an out–dated, practically un heard of regulation. It was a
effective way to raise money proven by the fact that by the end of the 1630s, fines from this source
had raised a total of £174,000 from over 9000 members of the gentry. Furthermore, during personal
rule there was a revival of Forest Laws, based on medieval royal forest boundaries. Landowners
whose estates now encroached on these boundaries found themselves unable to produce the title
deeds for their land because

The age of enlightenment, in western society, projected the rejection of traditional Christianity, western philosophy, intellectual advances, scientific, and cultural life, government legitimacy and authority. Upon the enlightenment period multiple philosophers emerged, the individuals arose to leading figures using reason to understand all aspects of human life. This ideology is embraced during the French Revolution as "before the revolution, French society was grounded in the inequality of rights," among the citizens. The national assembly, influenced by John Locke's ideology of rejecting royal reign superiority, created the Declaration of the Rights of Man and of the Citizen. Locke's argument of revolution against tyranny was accepted to bring reasonable rule to the nation and citizens. The same liberalist view of overthrowing of ruler is seen during the napoleon rule. Benjamin Constant published The Principles of Politics advocating for the regulations of the generals will of the individuals liberty, "distinguishing between sovereignty, authority, and individual freedom," right before Napoleon's final defeat. • 6. The Enlightenment World Literature The Enlightenment's Impact on the Modern World The Enlightenment, Age of Reason, began in the late 17th and 18th century. This was a period in Europe and America when mankind was emerging from centuries of ignorance into a new age enlightened by reason, science, and respect for humanity. This period promoted scientific thought, skeptics, and intellectual interchange: dismissing superstition, intolerance, and for some, religion. Western Europe, Germany, France, and Great Britain, and the American Colonies generally influenced the age of reason. Following the Renaissance, science and rationality was the forefront of this age. An unobstructed supply of grain in France would be a means of increasing total output. In 1776 Adam Smith published The Wealth of Nations, which forwards similar ideas. Smith was somewhat different from the physiocrats, though, because he believed that labor and the market were the prime creators of wealth. Smith argues "The greatest improvement in the productive powers of labour, and the greater part of the skill, dexterity, and judgment with which it is anywhere directed, or applied, seem to have been the effects of the division of labour."(Smith) He believes labor for one owns success is the best way to work, not wealth based on social standings. In making these arguments, both the physiocrats and Adam Smith struck at the hold that the aristocracy was trying to maintain on the economy. Locke agrees, "All wealth is the product of labor" The laissez–faire economists believed that wealth should not be confined to one class. As articulated in France, therefore, the argument for laissez–faire economics was an argument that the ancient regime should be abolished and replaced with a more equal basis for society. While rejecting neoclassical views of order, reason, tradition, society and formal diction. Romanticism allowed people to get away from the constrained rational views of life and concentrate on an emotional and sentimental side of humanity. Romantic escapism is an extremely important element of John Keats' poetry, serving as a foundation for many of his poems. In the "ode to a Nightingale" he is pouring out his thoughts and is longing for escape from the world full of strife, sadness and grief. The recurrence of this theme in his poems is actually not only a part of romanticism, but also greatly a result of his personal unfortunate experiences in life. This painful experience in life is what makes him somewhat pessimistic and compels him to resort to the option of "escapism" through his poetry ("KEATS ' PROJECTION OF ROMANTIC ESCAPISM"). The poem Ode to a nightingale begins with the narrator saying he feels a drowsy numbness but the feeling is not from jealousy of the nightingale's happiness because the narrator rejoices in the song. While listening to and appreciating the sweetly sung song of the nightingale, Keats too, wishes to become like her so that he can fly away from the cruel world that has given him nothing else but pain. "That I might drink, and leave the world unseen, and with thee fade away into the forest dim." (Keats 1006) Through the use of the nightingale, a very real living creature in nature, Keats has provided us with both a real bird and a symbol of the immortality that is nature. • 10. The Significance of Dreams in of Mice and Men The Significance of Dreams in Of Mice and Men A major motif of John Steinbeck 's Of Mice and Men is the American dream and the drive to attain it. The life of a ranch hand is grim, yet the characters in the novel are still vulnerable to dreams of a better life. The dream of owning land, called the American dream by some, is what motivates George and Lennie in their work on the ranch. It is their friendship that sustains this dream and makes it possible. However, George needs Lennie just as much as Lennie needs him, which is apparent at the end of the novel. When George kills Lennie, he also kills the friendship, which results in the death of the dream within himself. Friendship is an underlying factor in the dreams of others, as well. Candy and Crooks befriend George and Lennie when they learn of the possibility of owning land. They share the same dream as the two new workers, a dream that would have seemed impossible before the friendship began. Throughout the novel, Steinbeck offers clues that lead the reader to believe that the dream will be fulfilled. Candy and Crook 's interest in George and Lennie 's dream is the main factor that causes the reader to believe that these two newcomers might actually succeed. Candy believes in the dream to the extent that he offers three hundred dollars that are needed to buy the land. Crooks, the Negro stable buck, adds to the effect. At first he is skeptical of George and Lennie 's plan: "Ever 'body wants a little piece of lan '... Nobody never gets to heaven, and nobody gets no land. It 's just in their head" (Steinbeck 74). However, when he learns of Candy 's offer to contribute almost all of the money needed for the land, he wants to join them. • 14. Dorothea Dix’s Effects on Asylum Reform, the Civil War,... Dorothea Lynde Dix is a famous woman in history that has been commemorated for her many helpful contributions to the world. Throughout her life span, she singlehandedly bestowed her assistance to individuals, states, and even full countries. She is known for many small, well–rounded triumphs but when summed up, all equate to a large portion of kind, beneficial deeds and charitable works. Dorothea Dix left an impact on the world through her efforts of sharing her teachings with others, the treatment and care of the mentally ill, and with her nursing in the Union army. When Dix was at the young age of fourteen in 1821, through the encouragement of her family, she created an academy for wealthy adolescent children. In order to make her teaching even more privileged, Dix studied astronomy, mineralogy, and the natural sciences for two years (Buckmaster 5). Once her first school took off, she created another. The second school that Dix conducted was for poor children who could not afford to go to anywhere else. Because of her strict ways of teaching and her passion for her work, both of Dix's schools became very popular and victorious ("Dorothea Lynde Dix", Encyclopedia of World Biography). Her ways of teaching helped many students benefit intellectually. When Dix's poor health became distracting to her instructional career, she was forced to take breaks from teaching. He was an avid home rule advocate, a leader in the Irish Parliamentary Party, and a devout follower of Charles Parnell. He was jailed several times for his political activity within the home rule cause. In May of 1881, he wrote this letter out of Kilmainham Gaol, where he was imprisoned. One of the first notable things seen is the actual stationary, which is has black edges. Black–edged stationery was mostly used for mourning stationary during the Victorian era. It was used when a family member died. Dillon's sister Christina had died from tuberculosis in December 1880, prompting him to use the black–edge stationary. Dillon wrote the letter in Kilmainham Gaol, located in Dublin. It was opened in 1796, and was used to house political prisoners, as well as others. Notable prisoners held here were Dillon, Dillon's mentor Charles Stewart Parnell, Robert Emmet, The Invincibles, along with other Home Rule advocates and independence seekers. It was abandoned in 1924 due to aging infrastructure. Interest in its refurbishment began in 1966. Today, the gaol serves as a museum open to the public, operated by the Irish Office of Public Works. The letter was written on of May 30th, 1881, and was addressed to Cowen. This can be presumed to be Joseph Cowen, who was an English member of Parliament for Newcastle upon Tyne from 1874 until 1886. • 18. OF MICE AND MEN (CRUELTY) "All cruelty springs from weakness," said Lucius Annaeus Seneca. To me, this quote means that cruelty comes out from a person who is feeling weak. A big question people ask each other is "Why are people cruel to each other?" In John Steinbeck's novel, Of Mice and Men, there are many incidents of cruelty. Cruelty appeared in the book when George yells at the mentally handicapped Lennie in the beginning of the book. This trend of cruelty continues throughout the book. Characters that were notably cruel in the book are Curley, Curley's wife, and George. The three things that motivate people to be cruel in the book are: when people feel they are powerless, when a person wants a feeling of short term enjoyment from ... As a result of the torment they put him through, Crooks becomes a very bitter person. When he is talking to Lennie in the stable Crooks tells him, "They play cards in there, but I can't play because I'm black. They say I stink." (68) Their intentions are cruel. They treat Crooks like he is an animal. They feel uncomfortable around him, so they just ignore him completely. Crooks gets fed up with all of the negative treatment and his heart hardens. In depression era America, no greater truth could be said. There were millions unemployed, largely unskilled and living on the margins of society. The lowest of the low were the migrant labourers travelling from place to place trying to scratch a living. They often had to travel illegally by freight car with all its consequent dangers. Their life expectancy was low, crime was rampant and despair was a fellow traveller. This is the setting of John Steinbeck 's, ‘Of Mice and Men '. The novel explores the predatory nature of human existence. It explores loneliness, isolation and friendship. A major theme is that of ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Profound Truth Oppression does not always come from the strong and powerful. In Steinbeck 's world, the weak prey on the weaker–for example, Curley 's wife threatens to have Crook 's lynched. What we can take from incidents like this is that the strength to oppress others is itself born of weakness. Economic Reality There is no doubt that this book is a critique of pure market capitalism. The alienation of the worker or the unemployed is very evident. The ethics are ‘dog eat dog '–a total lack of regard for the dignity of the human person. The struggle of Labour to regain its dignity is best exemplified in Steinbeck 's ‘In Dubious Battle '. Motifs 1. A man only world 2. The Corrupting Power of Women 3. Loneliness 4. The Human Spirit Steinbeck has been criticized for many things including the creation of ‘a mans ' world where women take a secondary place. There is no doubt but that he was influenced by the macho acting Hemingway in this regard. Women are looked on as self–serving and or dangerous, the Femme Fatale beloved of Film Noir. They tempt men to behave in ways they would otherwise not do, e.g.– Curley 's wife fulfils the dangerous flirt stereotype. Loneliness is a recurring motif in the novel. Crooks is a very good representation of a victim of one of the worst qualities in humans – racism. He also represents how some people may react to such mistreatment. He shows how the cruelty to victims can change them and cause them to feel lonely and sometimes angry in Crooks' case. 'I can't play because I'm black.' This shows how racist people exclude him from activities and such like just because he is black in colour showing racial prejudice. Crooks also expresses the intolerance shown towards him by other people when he says 'If I say something, why it's just a nigger sayin' it.' Another example of the discrimination is when Candy compliments his room and crooks replies in the tone of sarcasm, 'Sure, and a manure pile under the window.' His living conditions also show the lack of respect towards Crooks – his ' bunk was a long box filled with hay.' Although Crooks has to live in this way, John Steinbeck writes how he takes it and gets on with it. 'He kept his distance and demanded that other people kept theirs. Crooks also shows his loneliness – Sometimes he gets thinkin', an' he got nothing to tell him what's so an' what ain't so.' During part of the 19th century many perceived the mentally ill as 'lost souls'. People viewed these patients as incurable and helpless. Mental patients were mistreated, taken advantage of, beaten, thrown into unclean quarters, and abused. Dorothea Dix, a pioneer of her time, advocated for the mentally ill. She changed the way these people were viewed and most importantly the way they were treated. Dix rebelled against inadequacies and campaigned, alone, for the rights of the mentally ill. Dix was shocked to have "observed [that] prostitutes, drunks, criminals, retarded individuals, and the mentally ill were all housed together in unheated, unfurnished, and foul–smelling quarters. When asked why the jail was in these conditions her answer was, 'the insane do not feel heat or cold'" (Bumb, 2008). Dix found the mentally ill in overcrowded areas, chained in poorly ventilated cellars (Viney, 2008). Throughout the 1840's and beyond, Dix was consumed with creating and putting into action plans to guarantee safe facilities for the mentally ill community. Though not at optimal health, Dix travelled to every state along the east coast creating and employing 32 mental hospitals, 15 schools for the feeble minded, a school for the blind, and numerous training facilities for nurses (Bumb, 2008). Although Dix's beliefs were radical for her time, she did not relent. Dix proposed a plan that a land– grant of 12,500,000 acres be reserved and used for the benefit of the blind, deaf, mute and insane. Reactive Attachment Disorder A Research on Reactive Attachment Disorder of Early Childhood Yolanda Ashton Liberty University Abstract This paper explores the psychological disorder known as Reactive Attachment Disorder (RAD). It will investigate how a child diagnosed with RAD will have an inefficient connection with his or her caregiver during an early age. RAD is considered a serious disorder which affects infant and young children who have difficulties establishing healthy relationship with their caregiver or parents. The flawed relationship will affect the child's ability to establish normal affiliation with other human being. Thus, a child's rapport was a major determinant in the etiology of ... Corbin (2007) cited that "The disorder is assumed to be the result of pathological parenting and often associated with developmental delays and childhood neglect" (p. 540). The DSM – IV – TR indicated that "laboratory findings consistent with malnutrition may be present" (APA, p. 128) and physical findings might be associated with medical conditions in connection with extreme neglect that may include but not limited to delay in physical growth, evidence of physical abuse, malnutrition, vitamin deficiencies, or infectious diseases (APA, p. 128). The DSM – IV – TR (APA, 2000) described two subtypes of the disorder which was identified to be caused by pathogenic care as evidenced by persistent disregard of the child's emotional and physical needs (Corbin, 2007, p. 540). The subtypes are: Inhibited Type – the child persistently fails to initiate and to respond to most social interactions in a developmentally appropriate way. The child shows a pattern of excessively inhibited, hyper–vigilant, or highly ambivalent responses (e.g., frozen watchfulness, resistance to comfort, or a mixture of approach and avoidance). Disinhibited Type – there is a pattern of diffuse choice of attachment. The disturbance is not accounted for solely by developmental delay (e.g., as in Mental Retardation) and does not meet criteria for Pervasive Developmental Disorder. • 41. Essay about Dorothea Dix Known as an American philanthropist and reformer, Dorothea Dix transformed living conditions in prisons and established institutions for the mentally insane in 20 states, as well as Canada ("DIX"). Through her crusade for fair treatment of the mentally insane, Dorothea Dix exemplifies the ideals of her time – to protect the rights of all human beings, no matter their age, race, or mental capacity. On April 4, 1802 in Hampden, Maine, Dorothea Lynde Dix was born to Joseph and Mary Dix. Due to her mother's poor health, Dix assumed the household duties of tending to the house and caring for her two younger brothers from a very young age. Meanwhile, her father traveled as a preacher who sold religious books that Dix and her family ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... At her doctor's request, Dix spent 18 months in Liverpool, England, during which her mother and grandmother passed away. Soon after, she returned to America, but sadly, Dix was still to drained to resume teaching (Morin). Four years later, in 1837, Dix agreed to instruct the women at the local jail on religion. When she arrives at the jail, she finds some of the women, who seem to be mentally impaired, foul and freezing, so she asks that their quarters be heated, however, the man responds that the "lunatics" do not feel the cold and therefore they do not need to waste resources keeping them warm. Incensed, Dix recruits two respected gentlemen, Samuel Gridley Howe and Charles Sumner, who confirm, and support her requests that conditions at the jail be bettered; in light of their support, the jail agrees to improve their conditions. This experience motivated Dix to study the mentally ill, in an effort to understand the cause and the best way to treat it (Morin). Early on in her studies, Dix decided that Massachusetts should do more for their mentally ill citizens. However, at the time, Massachusetts provided better care than many other states, and thanks to Horace Mann, already had two insane asylums, although they were unequipped to handle the large population of mentally ill patients that needed care. Over the next eighteen months, Dix traveled from jail to asylum to prison to poorhouse, taking extensive ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 43. Dorothea Dix : An Extraordinary Woman Who Wore Many Hats Dorothea Dix was an extraordinary woman who wore many hats: family caregiver, teacher, author, advocate, social reformer, school and hospital founder, and superintendent. Dorothea Dix held one role more important and noteworthy than any of these however; she was a nurse. Dix's work advocating for prisoners, the mentally ill and women changed the profession of nursing, as well as aspects of the healthcare system, forever. Dorothea Dix was born on April 4, 1802 in Hampden, Maine. She was the eldest of three siblings, who were born to a mentally ill mother and a fanatically religious, alcoholic, and sometimes abusive, father. Although her childhood was far from ideal, her father valued education and taught Dix to read and write at a young age. Dix became the caretaker of the household at a young age and sacrificed her childhood to take care of her two younger brothers. At age 10, Dix left Maine and moved to Boston to live and study with her grandmother. At age 14 she began teaching in Worcester, Massachusetts and in 1819, she founded a schoolhouse for young women called the Dix Mansion. It was not only a school for young women, but also partially a charity; Dix allowed poor and economically challenged young women to attend for free. Dix was a teacher for 25 years in Boston and Worcester, Massachusetts, before finding her true calling. She began teaching Sunday classes at East Cambridge Prison, a women's prison, in March 1841. Dix was utterly appalled at the treatment that ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 45. Should Geroge Have Killed Lennie As people may know, George Milton is accused for the murder of Lennie smalls instantly killing him in the back of his head. But George is innocent and there was a method to this behind all this madness. First it must be understood that George had two decisions: To kill Lennie? Or let Lennie live and take him to trial? Since Lennie was George's best friend whom he took care of all the time because he was mentally disabled so, obviously George did not want to watch his friend be tortured and killed in such an inhumane, harsh manner which explains why George would choose to take the law into his own hands. "Of Mice and Men" written by John Steinbeck explains the story of two best friend's George Milton a small guy, and Lennie Smalls a big ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Another reason George had no other choice was that Lennie was not fully aware of his mental abilities as he was his physical strengths which often lead to Lennie getting in trouble like his one one incident that happened in weed before they came to the ranch. Also, aside from Curley's Wife Lennie has killed other things before such as a mouse that he found, and a puppy on the ranch so Lennie could be a danger or potential threat to others on the ranch which would make sense to why George would have simply no other realistic choice but to kill him. Lastly, Lennie would have been shot regardless. Curley wanted to shoot Lennie but if he were to have shot him Lennie would have died in fear and that is exactly what George did not want to happen. Csrlson had also wanted to shoot Lennie and Geroge might have remembered Carlson shooting Candy's dog and after candy saying "I ought to have shot the dog myself". George could have realized that if he did not shot Lennie himself than he would regret it just like Candy had. Lennie was so big that he unaware of his strengths and he could have hurt someone else again or he could have put his own life in jeopardy as well. George killing Lennie was justified because George was Lennie's best friend and Geroge knew that he Curley was going to kill Lennie anyways. • 51. Old Yeller Abstract When people think of the book or the movie, Old Yeller, it is often thought of as a story about the bond between a boy and his dog, a common theme in many TV shows and books. However, Old Yeller, as it turns out, proves to be much more than that; it is a true coming–of–age story. At 14 years old, Travis Coates lives with his mother and little brother, Arliss, in the hill country of Texas during the 1860s when his father must leave home to work on a cattle drive. He leaves Travis to "act a man's part" and take care of the family in his absence. Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Afterall, he had just lost his dog, Bell, to a rattlesnake bite, and the attachment to both Bell and his father cannot be replaced so soon. With his father gone away for several months and Bell dead at the fangs of a rattlesnake, Travis has some major adjustments to make in terms of his "internal model of self." He needs to take on the rolf of a man. He has many conflicting roles to deal with– disciplinarian to his younger brother, Arliss, only to get scolded by his mother for doing so which leaves him feeling there is no winning because of the conflict caused by assuming so many roles– boy, playmate, man, and protector. These conflicts frustrate Travis who thought it was not fair and thinks to himself, "how could I be the man of the family if nobody paid any attention to what I thought or said...I sulked and felt sorry for myself all the time...[and] the more I thought of it the angrier I at got at that big yeller dog." (Gibson 1956). Travis feels offended, too, that Lisbeth turns out to be a big help. She helps by getting the water and gathering the corn, and has a good time laughing with Mama and Arliss. It hurts Travis' pride to see him so easily replaced by a girl. He consoles himself by remembering that he can hunt, mark hogs and swing an axe, and she cannot (studymode 2014). • 55. A Stranger Essay : Kindness To A Stranger Kindness to a Stranger It was a chilly evening in Southern Virginia many years ago. There was the old man whose beards were glazed by the winter's frost, as he hopelessly waited for a ride across the river. Due to the frigid north wind, his body was numb and stiff. Edward, who was passing by saw this desperate old man, who looked so confused and helpless. He asked the old man, "what are you doing here at this late hour?" The freezing man answered, "I am waiting for a ride to take me home." Edward took some time with the old man, as they waited for a ride to take him to the next side of the river. The wait seemed endless and ineffective. However, they both heard the faint, steady rhythm of approaching hooves dashing along the icy path. Anxiously, the old man and Edwin watched as several riders curved the bend. He let the first one pass without seeking attention from him. Apparently, Edward was very annoyed, asking him the reason for not stopping the passing horseman. The man kept quiet as he checked out on whether there was another one coming. The another one passed by, followed by other two. When Edward saw that the old man was not using any effort to seek help from either of the riders, he was tired and decided to leave the old man alone. After a while, the last horseman by the name John Denis neared the spot where the old man had sat like a snow statue. During the Great Depression of the 1930s when America was plunged into financial crisis following the Wall Street Crash of October 1929, levels of unemployment and poverty were at an all time high. In this ear life was a struggle and the mentality of society became survival of the fittest, every man for himself. Migrant workers toured the country in search of labour to provide money for food typically sent to relatives living on the bread line elsewhere in America. These men lead lonely and emotionless lives, which are reflected through Steinbeck's portrayal of his characters in his famous, yet bleak, 1930s novella 'Of Mice and Men.' In the novel, George and Lennie's ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Evidentially, George does not believe the dream will ever become reality as he rhythmically reels off the words to Lennie as a matter of habit rather than optimism. That said, it is clear that although George does not believe the dream will come true he is thankful to have Lennie by his side 'somebody to talk to that gives a damn about us' which perhaps implies that although Steinbeck presents the pair as victims, he also presents them as lucky in the fact that they have each other and care for each other enough to build a firm relationship. To Lennie the dream is all about the rabbits he intends to keep and pet, rather than an engine of hope which drives George to continue the struggle. Lennie excites in the idea that one day he will own a rabbit hutch 'An' have rabbits' because he is unable to see further than his own desires, however George dreams of simplicities such as 'how thick the cream is on the milk' implying that all he would like is a stable home. Regardless of their differences in the importance of aspects included in the dream, their dream bonds them together in a shared goal which is to get a 'stake' so they can buy 'a little house and a couple of acres.' Many migrant workers shared in dreaming of a better future but had nobody to share it with as everyman was for himself, making George and Lennie's relationship a rare occurrence. • 59. Loneliness & Isolation in 'of Mice and Men' An idea I found interesting in the novel 'Of Mice And Men,' by John Steinbeck was loneliness and isolation. I found this idea interesting because it helped me understand how important it is to be surrounded by people. George and Lennie's friendship contrasts this idea as they are friends and they have each other, whereas most of the other ranch workers travel alone. The idea of loneliness was strongly conveyed through the characters Crooks and Curley's wife, they are both key examples of lonely and segregated characters. The location of the ranch also represents the idea of isolation as the Spanish translation of the town's name 'Soledad' means loneliness. Crooks is perhaps the most segregated character in the novel and therefore ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... By having no name, she seems to be even more friendless, and I think this is interesting because to get to know someone and try to make friends with them, a name is a good place to start. She regularly enters the bunkhouse, apparently looking for Curley, but as the novel progresses, we become aware that she is actually pretending to look for Curley just so she can talk to someone – "I get awful lonely," conveys this realization. The men at the ranch become aware of her loneliness when she reveals to them that she is alone – "Think I don't like to talk to someone ever' once in a while? Think I like to stick in that house alla time?" Curley's wife's loneliness leads her to talk to Lennie and let him feel her hair. Unfortunately for both characters, Lennie does not realise his own strength and accidentally breaks her neck in anxiety and panic. In this case, I found the idea of loneliness interesting because it made me think about loneliness and how it can have a negative effect on people. Humans need friendship to stay connected and part of society and I found this interesting because I feel that I am surrounded by good spirited spirited people who do have friends and this really contrasts with the situations in the novel. The idea of loneliness and isolation is shown though the use of contrast – George and Lennie have a friendship which allows them to have support and "someone to talk to that gives a damn about us." The novella shows the relationship between the protagonists, George and Lennie, and showing how they try to achieve the American Dream by working together. This is in contrast to many of the other characters who are alone by themselves which seems to be the norm at the time of the Great Depression. The reader is able to look at how the need to have a companion is portrayed by Steinbeck, especially during the harsh economic times that the story is set in. Brandon – Well, as you know I'm not that fussy! Kain – Now if we were to follow tradition, we would delve into the lesser known stories of John's life and bring up things about his ex girlfriends. I don't think that's fair however as they're not here to defend themselves.......foot & mouth took it's toll unfortunately. Brandon – John,.......... Rhonda's a lovely person. She deserves a good husband. Thank God you married her before she found one! Seriously though John, you are a lucky groom; you've got Rhonda. She's beautiful, smart, funny, warm, loving and caring. And Rhonda, you've got..............John. Brandon – We've known John for some 25+ years and I spent my entire schooling with John so as you can imagine when preparing our speech we had a mountain of material to choose from. However the main problem we were faced with was what to leave in.

Even though he was born in Pope's Creek, Washington actually spent most of youth at a plantation called the Ferry Farm near Fredericksburg. There, he grew up with his 6 brothers and 3 sisters. Three of his brothers were his half–brothers and one of sisters was his half–sister from his father's first marriage. Washington was educated and went schools near him. He was not able to afford the luxuries of private tutors and studying abroad because his father died when he was 11. His formal education ended when he was 15. In 1959, he married Martha Washington who he stayed until he died without any children of his own. Before becoming president, Washington was a county surveyor as well as General in a soldier. He died on December 14, 1799 in Mount Vernon, Virginia. On June 19, 1775, Washington was named Commander in Chief of the Continental Army by the Congress. He was elected because of his military background from the French & Indian War although it did not prepare him for anything the Revolution offered. However, he had courage, determination, and mental agility. On July 4, 1776, George Washington signed the Declaration of Independence. • 76. Literary Exploration on of Mice and Men Literary Exploration In life we are part of many roles that create dangers we face that may lie beyond our understanding. Even though these roles are hard to understand, they can give meaning to our life. In John 's Steinbeck "Of Mice and Men," we see these men 's day to day lives, the main character; George takes care of his friend Lennie who has difficulties understanding the rules of the world we live in. Through the story there are many ups and downs mostly involving Lennie, who is trying to see through the eyes of George and to do and be as George is. For this reason George is constantly trying to think of what is best for Lennie. Through all of this they face even more dangers and still try to find a way to raise money for a farm to ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... . . every damn one of 'em's got a little piece of land in his head. An' never a God damn one of 'em ever gets it. Just like heaven. Ever'body wants a little piece of lan'. I read plenty of books out here. Nobody never gets to heaven, and nobody gets no land." In this passage , after Lennie shares with Crooks his plan to buy a farm with George and raise rabbits, Crooks tries to deflate Lennie's hopes which creates dangers that may lie beyond our understanding. He relates that "hundreds" of men have passed through the ranch, all of them with dreams like Lennie's. Not one of them, he emphasizes with bitterness, ever succeeds to make that dream come true. Crooks shows a sense of reality, telling again of Lennie's childlikeness , and that the dream of a farm is, after all, only a dream. This moment show's off Crook's character, and how a lifetime of loneliness and cruelty can lead to bitterness. It also furthers Steinbeck's disturbing thought's that those who have strength and power in the world are not the only ones responsible for cruelty. As Crooks shows, even though he was hurt by others, he seeked out Lennie and attacked him because he is even weaker than Crooks is. Sometimes in life we have difficulty in decisions that makes us question our morals even deeper our character. ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 78. How much sympathy does the reader feel towards Curleys wife? Curley's wife is a character in the novel "Of mice and men" set in California and written in 1937 by John Steinbeck. She is the only woman on a ranch of itinerant working men, and because of this she gets treated by each man in a different manner. Most of the men treat her in a negative way, therefore causing different degrees of sympathy from the reader. Sympathy implies that the reader feels an emotional connection towards the character. Her unhappy marriage to the boss's son causes her great loneliness and unhappiness as she tries, in vain, to find someone to talk to on the ranch. The reader may feel certain degrees of sympathy for Curleys wife due to the fact that the ranch workers are always talking behind ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Towards the end of her initial introduction, Curleys wife addresses George "playfully", with could portray her as an intentionally promiscuous character. She is known around the ranch for teasing the male ranch workers and being apparently disloyal to Curley. The adjective "playfully" could cause the reader to feel unsympathetic towards Curleys wife, because she may give the men false hope by flirting and acting in a promiscuous way when she is around them. On the other hand, Curleys wife flirting could be interpreted as unintentional, harmless conversations and friendships between her and the ranchworkers. This would be understandable because as she mentions later in the novella in Crooks' room, she gets "awful lonely" on the ranch. Curleys wife is seen by everyone on the ranch as a sexual object, due to her makeup and clothes. Whenever she tries to interact with any of the workers, they assume she is flirting and spread rumours about her, however she may just be a lonely woman on a ranch full of men. Curley regards her as an item that he possesses ownership over, and so he is always looking for her to make sure she isn't with any of the other men. This shows that Curley doesn't trust his wife, and so their relationship and marriage isn't a happy one. In chapter ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 80. ‘Charles’Ability to Finance His Government Effectively... 'Charles' ability to finance his government effectively and without too much resentment during the personal rule was a remarkable achievement.' How Far Do You Agree? For the greater part of the 1630's Englishmen paid their taxes, most likely grumbling whilst doing it, but they were paid. During his personal rule 1629–40, Charles I needed to raise revenue by using non–parliamentary means, i.e. in ways he would not need a parliament's permission to collect. In order to do this, Charles changed certain policies to make them more financially gaining and brought back taxes that had not been used for numerous years, ranging from Ship Money to Credit to Monopolies. Upon his arrival in the court of Charles I, Lord Treasurer Weston tried to ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... In 1635, custom duty brought in £358,000 for Charles and throughout the 1630s, it accounted for almost two–thirds of the crown's revenue. This was an effective way to raise money for Charles, but it was a sore point with many members of his rejected parliament. It was also, essentially illegal to collect such duties as he was going against what they had stated to him in 1625. In order to raise more money, Charles employed half–forgotten feudal dues and devices. The distraint of knighthood was a medieval stratagem in which men owning estates worth £40 a year were supposed to present themselves to the King at his coronation. It was a law, which had not been used since the early Tudors, and Charles began to fine people for not performing as the law states. Gentlemen found themselves being fined by the King for an out–dated, practically un heard of regulation. It was a effective way to raise money proven by the fact that by the end of the 1630s, fines from this source had raised a total of £174,000 from over 9000 members of the gentry. Furthermore, during personal rule there was a revival of Forest Laws, based on medieval royal forest boundaries. Landowners whose estates now encroached on these boundaries found themselves unable to produce the title deeds for their land because ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
