The document is Margaret Gammill's design portfolio, which outlines her studio work including projects for an advanced interdisciplinary studio, interior studio B, and transdisciplinary studio 1. It focuses on her design of the Fort Point Kyudojo, a Japanese archery destination in Boston. The Kyudojo design aims to balance experiences for indoor and outdoor archers through principles inspired by the ancient practice of Kyudo archery and the site's relationship between historic and modern elements.

Stirring Emotions - Making the Human ConnectionFITCH
Emotions differentiate humans from other living things. They make us unpredictable, impulsive and endlessly interesting. When tapped in to, our emotions allow brands to connect in a more relevant way. It is a known fact that consumers are more likely to purchase when they connect emotionally to a brand. Brands and retailers need to translate this understanding of people into an enhanced brand experience which stirs emotions. Alasdair Lennox will discuss how to connect with consumers through distinctive experiences, and how these memorable moments build value for brands. He will also share a preview of Group XP’s 2017 Experience Index, which measures the value of brand experience.

Strategic Cartography: Identifying IL Intersections Across the Curriculumchar booth
Presentation at ACRL 2015 in Portland, OR.
Abstract: Curriculum mapping builds insight into the sequence of requirements and competencies a learner negotiates while on an academic path. When combined with data visualization, visual curriculum mapping (VCM) provides a holistic view of an entire educational community, highlighting pivotal points at which to introduce information literacy instruction, resources, and research support. This paper presents findings of a large-scale consortial VCM project in 2013-14, exploring anticipated and unanticipated outcomes and offering strategies applicable to other institutions.

2. As a designer I aim to be the middle man
between a client’s desires and the physical and visual embodiment
of those previously unexpressed ideas.
I see design as a unique tool that can articulate a third dimension
that is unattainable through words alone. Design draws
connections -- literally and figuratively -- between ideas, people,
and styles. Design can evoke feelings, set moods, establish
ambiances.
Ultimately, as a designer I want to connect with others: I want to
clarify ideas, to create dream spaces, to speak to people, and to
speak for people three-dimensionally.

4. BOSTON: THE LITTLE BIG CITY
Living in Boston has just enough perks to earn that qualified “Big” title:
the second-string baseball team, those iconic universities, and, most of all, that skyline.
Those glittering feats of architecture that make you feel like you’re somewhere important, somewhere
noteworthy.
The buildings that put you “on the map,” that mark the land beneath your feet, and reassure that
You Are Here, blinking up at the real-life version of someone else’s postcard promises.
All of it is laid out at your feet along the Fort Point Channel,
finding you before you ever think to look for it.
That is the Big of the matter: straight-forward and shiny, awe-inspiring and available to all.
It’s a crown jewel resting above our heads, casting us all as members of the city’s collective “we.”
But what about the Small of it all?
Where does “we” end, and “you and I” begin?
It’s the little moments, our “discovered” destinations,
that connect us to a place, and take us from being somewhere to finding ourselves there.

8. THE PROGRAM IN CONTEXT
How does Kyudo, an ancient Japanese archery practice, integrate into the Fort Point Landscape?
How does its seven coordination rhythm synchronize with the steady pulsing between
the pull of history and the push of innovation?
Like the site, Kyudo’s identity today is an evolved descendant of its original form.
What originally began as a tool in warfare exists today as a martial art whose main goal is not
hitting a target, but rather, achieving inner peace and clarity through the choreography
of the seven coordinations. This is a practice that values
ritual over efficiency, process over results.

Here, too, we see the common theme of
finding balance between unequal parts
Literally, this balance speaks to the co-supporting roles that
the yumi (bow) and ya (arrow) play with one another.
Figuratively, the process of finding balance among unequal parts speaks to the
mental process that accompanies the choreography of the seven coordinations.

2. Creating a space with an embedded sense of ritual
My aim was to make the process of arriving at the practice space feel
like its own set of choreography, to give users a pronounced sense of
preparatory introspection followed by practice-induced reflection.
The sequence of arriving at either dojo space intends to evoke the sense
that one is approaching greatness, a place of cerebral levity that seems to
hover a few feet above the everyday world.

1. Balance of Experiences and Elements
I designed both the observers’ and archers’ spaces with the goal of creating
a similar experience regardless of whether one is headed to target practice
or the full shooting range.
This principle also guided my use of materials and space, as expressed through binary
relationships between complementary parts, specifically:
application of wood + concrete
areas of expansion + compression
use of shadow + light

The brilliance of Perriand’s design lies in her two-fold connection to nature: First, there is her respect for the natural
environment and her innovative use of natural materials. Second, there is Perriand’s appreciation for human nature, i.e., her
belief in the universal right of “quality of life,” and her clear understanding of the necessary components required to achieve
that human prerogative.
