Many countries celebrate holidays differently. In America for our Independence Day we celebrate in
many ways. American Independence Day is celebrated on July 4th. It is referred to as the Fourth of
July or July Fourth. On this day in America, we celebrate with parades, carnivals, fairs, concerts,
and baseball games. As family outings we do barbecues , picnics, and family reunions. But the
number one way to celebrate the Fourth of July is to have a fireworks show. In Mexico they
celebrate their independence different. Mexican Independence Day is September 15th it is known as

young ages as a slave, he was the victim of and witness of cruelty at the hands of his owners,
therefore he had strong hatred toward slavery in the United States. After escaping from slavery to be
a free man in 1838, he published several autobiographies and became an outspoken advocate for the
abolitionist movement. One of the most recognized speeches of Frederick Douglass – "What to the
Slave is the Fourth of July?" – was held on the nation's 76th anniversary. By revealing unfairness
and injustice of racism throughout this speech, Douglass, with his angry but passionate and vigorous

The main problem faced by Americans in the Antebellum time period was whether or not to abolish
the institution of African American slavery. Many abolitionists, such as Andrew Lloyd Garrison and
Frederick Douglas, among others, would use the moving language of The Declaration of
Independence to attack Southern slaveholders for keeping their fellow human beings in bondage.
They claimed the current government was failing to secure the rights of, "life, liberty and the pursuit
of happiness," for a sizable portion of the American population.

unmistakable favor of its own" (Perry, 1949, p. 357). Many painters took up the plight of those who
were not sharing fully in the American dream (Craven, 2003, p. 564). Evidence of this is in the
visual images throughout the course of American history of what the overall ideology of American
culture summarizes enabling one to perceive what Americans' daily lives were like in the past, how
it is seen now in the present, and what it may reflect in the future. The African American artist
Robert Gwathmey (1903–88) painted pictures of the social injustices meted out to blacks to keep
them in poverty (Craven, 2003, p. 546). He captured the true aesthetics of the African American
culture and what dreams/aspirations they hoped to achieve, even portraying the struggle of their
