Using Reference Management Tools: EndNote and ZoteroUCD Library
Presentation by Diarmuid Stokes, College Liaison Librarian, University College Dublin Library, to the Health Sciences Libraries Group (HSLG) 2014 Annual Conference on May 23, 2014 in Dublin, Ireland.
Being found in commercial search engines, like Google, and writing indexable content have largely been on the periphery of library web development practice. In this session, we will explore the mechanics and principles of white hat SEO, identify components that contribute to successful harvesting of library web sites and microsites, and discuss the need to make library content findable in broader online settings. Come learn why SEO is not just "snake oil" and can be an integral part of library marketing and outreach initiatives.
Presented by Jason Clark: Jason is the Head of Digital Access and Web Services at Montana State University Library, where he builds library web applications and sets digital content strategies. You can find him online at http://jasonclark.info/ or on Twitter @jaclark.

Bridging the gap from Wikipedia to scholarly sources: a simple discovery solu...Valerie Forrestal
This presentation discusses the creation of a javascript bookmarklet that executes a search of library resources from any web page.
Many user searches begin with searches on the internet, often in Google and Wikipedia. For users to search the library resources, they first need to locate the library website, find the appropriate search tool and then execute their search. To make it easier for students to search the library resources, we created a Javascript bookmarket that eliminates the step of having to go to the library website first before searching.
The bookmarket provides an important bridge between common search behaviors (especially among undergraduates), and the "deep web" content located in library-funded, proprietary databases, thus easing their transition into scholarly research. The bookmarklet can be dragged-and-dropped into any browser, after which a search can then be initiated from any webpage the user visits. When the bookmarklet is clicked, the search terms default to the title of the page, and a prompt is displayed that allows the user to change the terms.

PoolParty Thesaurus Management - ISKO UK, London 2010Andreas Blumauer
Building and maintaining thesauri are complex and laborious tasks. PoolParty is a Thesaurus Management Tool (TMT) for the Semantic Web, which aims to support the creation and maintenance of thesauri by utilizing Linked Open Data (LOD), text-analysis and easy-to-use GUIs, so thesauri can be managed and utilized by domain experts without needing knowledge about the semantic web. Some aspects of thesaurus management, like the editing of labels, can be done via a wiki-style interface, allowing for lowest possible access barriers to contribution.

Using Web 2.0 Applications as Information Awareness Tools
The past few years have seen several new technological initiatives at Drexel University in interdisciplinary fields such as Nanomedicine, Engineering Cities, Drug Delivery, Plasma Medicine, Nanoscale Science and Technology, Microfluidics, and Bionanotechnology. These technological initiatives require faculty and students to work together in groups in a collaborative fashion. This has motivated librarians to experiment with new ways of reaching out to faculty and students. Drexel's emphasis on team based engineering design projects requires students to develop critical understanding of engineering subject areas. Developing awareness about the core electronic resources such as IEEE Xplore, Knovel, Web of Knowledge, Science Direct and Engineering Village is crucial in successfully undergoing research and completing assignments in their classes.
This presentation outlines innovative experiments using web 2.0 applications to increase information among faculty and students. Several web 2.0 tools such as Facebook, Friendfeed, Del.icio.us, Google Reader, Wikis, and blogs will be covered. Having engineering librarian's presence on Facebook is useful since many of the students are heavy Facebook users. Drexel's student Organizations such as IEEE and ASME are also on Facebook. Moreover, Drexel University's College of Engineering has recently launched its Facebook page where activities celebrating National Engineering Week have been quickly promoted among student. Drexel Engineering Information Awareness Campaign Group is a librarian-created Facebook group aimed at increasing awareness of new and existing resources among faculty and students. Feeds from Google Reader can be made automatically available on Facebook pages. For this to happen, a user needs to become ‘a friend’ with the engineering librarian on Facebook.
As faculty and students become more aware of new and existing information tools, the information skills learned during the process of exploring these resources will contribute to life-long learning among the engineering students.

2. Project History: Elsevier 2010 API app challenge (for creative use of the ScienceDirect open content API) Firefox add-on so researchers can search ScienceDirect from anywhere on the web, without going through the library’s website/ScienceDirect interface Added functionality: auto-populate search box to encourage Wikipedia/Google users to expand their research to library resources Issues: compatibility with other browsers search limited to ScienceDirect content aversion to add-ons due to Firefox memory-hogging managing code updates Solution: Cross-browser compatible JS bookmarklet (inspired by bit.ly,etc) + Ebsco Discovery Service
