Creator Labor
In chapter 0, we described how the network economics of social media,
the innovation culture of Silicon Valley 1rms that own the platforms,
and the technological and commercial a2ordances of platforms have
created the structural conditions for the creator economy. In doing
that, we proposed a revisionist account of political economy, empha-
sizing the deep con3icts and creative tensions arising from the clash
of industrial cultures of the two major forces in media and tech in
the world, Hollywood and Silicon Valley. Our main revisionist e2ort
in this chapter concerns a debate equally central to media, commu-
nications, and cultural studies— creative labor. We argue, through
attention to key literature in the debate, through exploring the con-
trasts between SME and main media, as well as through the voices of
creators themselves, that creator labor is both empowered and precari-
ous. One distinguishing feature of creator labor that requires attention
is that it, by necessity, works within an algorithmic culture— which
engages another key debate in the discipline. Much of the scholarship
in these debates is designed to reveal precarity and platform control
masked by industry boosterism, rhetoric, and spin. We are animated
more by seeking to trace the elements of empowerment in comparison
to main media labor.
First, though, turning our attention to the distinctive nature and
value of creators, we outline the scale of SME and consider termino-
logical conundrums that o4en get in the way of analytical clarity. A4er
establishing the theoretical frames for the chapter, we break down the
conditions of creator labor into their component parts. 5en we exam-
ine the problematics of the business models that underpin, as well as

Snapchat post and considerable opaqueness about reliable data. YouTube
used to release its revenue- sharing partner statistics every year, until it
changed its policies and permitted every user to become a partner and
thus no longer released such data. SME intermediaries, like multichan-
nel networks and talent representatives, are no more forthcoming with
their client data, emulating Hollywood’s notorious accounting practices.
As Adweek declared, the industry is “secretive and lacks transparency”

That the world of work as we have always known it is undergoing rapid metamorphosis is honestly an understatement, as the boundaries and worldview of work as currently constituted are being radically redefined at rocket speed level daily by many factors but more importantly by the unfolding Fourth Industrial Revolution (4IR). It appears that the ability of organizations, nations and societies to adapt and leverage the 4IR will determine the currency of their global relevance and the degree of sustainable development they can achieve.
The disruptive transformations that the fourth industrial revolution has brought into the contemporary global space are blurring the existing traditional boundaries in all spheres of life, enabling multifaceted convergence of multidisciplinary territories that were hitherto considered conceptually divergent.
This is a call to action for a multi-stakeholder, multidisciplinary approach to how nations particularly Nigeria can start conversations on the impact of the 4IR on work, the workplace and the workforce and how best to prepare for these disruptive impacts.

Metanomics host Robert Bloomfield welcomes a fellow Cornell professor who has written extensively on subjects that could be deemed official topics of virtual worlds conversations. Daryl J. Bem obtained a degree in Physics from Reed College in 1960 and continued with graduate studies at MIT. But the shift in attitudes towards desegregation in the American South brought on by the Civil Rights movement proved so intriguing that he completed a PhD in Social Psychology from the University of Michigan (1964) and embarked upon a teaching career at several top American universities.

Neuro-symbolic (NeSy) AI is on the rise. However, simply machine learning on just any symbolic structure is not sufficient to really harvest the gains of NeSy. These will only be gained when the symbolic structures have an actual semantics. I give an operational definition of semantics as “predictable inference”.
All of this illustrated with link prediction over knowledge graphs, but the argument is general.

This approach encourages minor, intentional adjustments in user behaviour to enrich the data available for system learning. This paper introduces epistemic interaction within the context of human-system communication, illustrating how deliberate interaction design can improve system understanding and adaptation. that it will launch its third year with a “mixed reality” event linking participants at a conference in San Jose, California with avatars in the virtual world
of Second Life. The event will take place September 23rd, 2009 at 4:00 p.m. Pacific Standard Time (PST) (2).
Guests on the show will include Linden Lab senior executives Philip Rosedale (founder and Chair) and Tom Hale (Chief Product Officer). Last year,
Residents of the immersive 3D world of Second Life spent more than $360 million on countless items of virtual goods - from land to designer shoes to
lavish homes. The virtual economy almost doubled in size in the past year, and at nearly $50 million per month in user-to-user transactions, the Second
Life economy is now on an annual run rate of more than half a billion US dollars, making Second Life the largest virtual economy in the industry.
Rosedale and Hale will discuss how Linden Lab has managed to develop such a robust economy for virtual goods, the challenges and opportunities of an
economy based on user-generated content, and the success stories of Second Life entrepreneurs making real profits from their virtual goods. They will
be joined by content creators from Second Life who will appear as avatars at the Metanomics event location.
The mixed reality event is a fitting start to a third year for Metanomics, which is hosted by Cornell University Professor Robert Bloomfield. Metanomics
explores the serious uses of virtual world and immersive technology. Through a weekly talk show format, Metanomics has helped to demonstrate that
there are “real world” impacts from the use of virtual world technology.
