This document discusses mental health and the prevention of alcohol and drug abuse. It defines mental health as a state of well-being where individuals can realize their potential and cope with stress. Mental ill health refers to more serious problems that can result from stressful situations and require support. Addiction is defined as a chronic relapsing brain disease characterized by compulsive substance use despite harmful consequences. Drug dependency develops from physical and/or psychological needs for mood-altering substances and is associated with tolerance and withdrawal symptoms. Psychoactive substances can alter biochemical processes and change mood, thoughts, perceptions, and behavior.
