Physical growth and cardiovascular health: a focus on stuntingInes Varela-Silva
- Stunting, as indicated by height-for-age, affects physical growth and long-term health. It can lead to less muscle mass and lower physical activity levels. It also influences energy use and fat storage.
- Stunting is caused by undernutrition during critical periods of development, especially the first 1000 days of life from conception through 2 years of age. It can have intergenerational effects through compromised maternal health and nutrition.
- Adults who experienced stunting may be at higher risk for cardiovascular diseases like heart disease later in life. However, more research is needed to understand the relationships between stunting, BMI, and risk of cardiovascular outcomes at different life stages.
Obesity is rising among college students. A survey found that 3 in 10 college students were overweight or obese, defined as a BMI over 30%. College students are gaining weight due to unhealthy lifestyles, eating habits, and relationships with food. Unhealthy habits include not eating enough fruits and vegetables and consuming too many sugary drinks. Unhealthy relationships with food can involve distorted perceptions of eating and damage self-esteem. Obesity increases risks for health conditions like high blood pressure, diabetes, and cancer.
Childhood obesity in the US has significantly increased over the past 30 years, with rates more than doubling. The CDC reported rates of obese children aged 6-11 years increased from 7% in the 1980s to 18% in 2012, while rates of obese adolescents aged 12-19 years increased from 5% to 21% over the same period. Childhood obesity can have both immediate and long-term health effects, including increased risk of cardiovascular disease, diabetes, bone and joint problems, and sleep issues. It may also lead to obesity in adulthood along with greater disease risks. The main cause is an imbalance between calorie intake and consumption due to diet and lifestyle factors, along with potential genetic and environmental influences.
The document is an announcement for a public lecture by Professor Peter Jones on the topic of epigenetics and how it links genes to the environment and influences health and disease. Epigenetics governs how DNA is packaged and genes are expressed, and can be influenced by environmental factors with long-term health effects. Changes to epigenetics can even be passed on to future generations, so a mother's diet during pregnancy can impact her child's disease risk later in life. The lecture will discuss how epigenetics explains diseases beyond simple genetics and its role in conditions like cancer, diabetes and mental health.
Experts are studying the relationship between diet and Alzheimer's disease. Research suggests that diets high in omega-3 fatty acids, B vitamins like folate, and antioxidants found in berries, green tea, and the Mediterranean diet may help prevent or slow the progression of Alzheimer's, but more studies are still needed. While no definitive link has been found yet between any food or supplement and Alzheimer's risk, maintaining a healthy lifestyle with a nutritious diet, exercise, and social activity may help reduce risk until more is understood.
This document provides summaries of several recent health-related studies and recommendations:
1) A study found that "superagers" aged 80+ have thicker brain cortexes and fewer tangles, showing their memories are as sharp as younger adults. Identifying factors for their memory capacity could help maintain cognitive function in normal elderly.
2) Hormone replacement therapy is associated with increased ovarian cancer risk, particularly for two main types. The risk is about one extra cancer per 1,000 users over 5 years of HRT starting at age 50.
3) People with kidney disease who eat meat-heavy diets have a 300% higher risk of kidney failure than those eating more fruits and vegetables, due to diet
This daily health update email provides summaries of recent studies on various health topics. A Swedish study found that men with lower IQ scores were more likely to engage in heavy or binge drinking. Another study suggests that a family history of prostate cancer may increase a woman's risk of breast cancer. Additional articles discuss research on an olive oil compound that may help fight cancer, benefits of exercise for brain health and mobility in older adults, neck and shoulder pain relief from stretching, and overall health benefits from diet and exercise.
1) Frailty refers to a loss of physiologic reserve that makes older adults susceptible to disability from minor stresses or challenges. It is not dependent on age, diagnosis, or functional ability.
2) Common features of frailty include weakness, weight loss, muscle wasting, exercise intolerance, frequent falls, immobility, and instability of chronic diseases.
3) Frailty exists on a continuum from vigorous to frail. Early intervention can help reduce disability and adverse outcomes like falls, injuries, hospitalizations, and death in frail older adults.
Cognition and Frailty in Older Adults: Evidence for a Possible Link:
Frailty is a prevalent geriatric syndrome that results from a reduction in the reserves of multiple systems, leading to a state of increased vulnerability to stressors. Many epidemiological studies have reported that frailty increases the risk of future cognitive decline and that cognitive impairment increases the risk of frailty suggesting that cognition and frailty interact within a cycle of decline associated with ageing.
The biological basis of frailty is complex. Frailty is a cumulative result of pathophysiological modifications caused by concurrent chronic conditions (e.g., cardiovascular and pulmonary disease, diabetes), subclinical adaptations of the systemic homeostatic mechanisms (e.g., inflammation, oxidative damage, and mitochondrial function), metabolic modifications, and behavioral factors (e.g., reduced physical activity).
Interestingly, some of these pathways are shared by both frailty and Alzheimer's disease. The main risk factors that are generally implicated in both conditions are: high IL-6, obesity, hyperglycemia, low DHEA, anemia, and hypovitaminosis D.
Therefore, treatment approaches that target the risk factors involved in the frailty cycle may be appropriate for prevention of incident cognitive impairment and vice versa

For more information: www.ageuk.org.uk/forlaterlife
Senescence is a gradual physical decline related to aging that affects every body part at varying rates. The five senses become less sharp over time, with eyesight declining most noticeably after age 60. Overeating combined with lack of exercise is a leading cause of premature death from obesity and related conditions like diabetes. While aging rates vary between individuals, factors like gender, genes, socioeconomic status, and lifestyle can impact the speed of senescence, with women and those of higher SES tending to age more slowly and live longer on average.
Healthy relationships are vital for health and well-being. Strong social relationships are linked to longer, healthier lives, as people with strong relationships are 50% less likely to die prematurely. Having caring friends provides a buffer against stress, and those with strong relationships recover faster from stressful tasks. Relationships also promote better health - people with strong relationships are half as likely to catch colds when exposed to viruses. Conversely, loneliness is linked to higher risks of depression, decreased immune function, higher blood pressure, and other health problems.
The document discusses how aging is not solely determined by genetics or the passage of time, but rather is influenced by lifestyle choices and environmental factors that can accelerate or decelerate the aging process. While lifespans have increased, quality of life in older years is not assured without steps to promote health. Factors discussed as impacting aging include inactivity, chemical pollution from medications, neurological stress from poor posture or injuries, and vertebral subluxations which can interfere with the nervous system. Maintaining activity, avoiding excessive medications, and addressing spinal issues can help support healthy aging.
The document discusses musculoskeletal changes that occur during adolescence and aging and provides strategies for prevention. During adolescence, major biological developments take place including puberty, growth spurts, and brain changes. Common musculoskeletal problems in adolescents include obesity, psychosocial issues like depression, physical injuries from sports, and school-related problems. Prevention strategies focus on early diagnosis, education, lifestyle management, and therapy. For aging individuals, prevention emphasizes regular checkups, healthy behaviors like exercise and nutrition, social engagement, and vaccinations to address common musculoskeletal conditions.

The document provides information about a 89-year-old female patient, Mrs. Torralba, who was admitted to the hospital due to a fracture of the right femoral neck. She fell two days prior and experienced pain and limited movement in her right hip. Diagnostic tests revealed decreased hemoglobin and hematocrit levels, indicating anemia. Her prothrombin time was increased, suggesting a deficiency in clotting factors. All other lab results were normal. The patient has a history of breast cancer, diabetes, and osteoporosis, putting her at high risk for fractures from falls.
This article discusses the increasing prevalence of type 2 diabetes in adolescents and the role of sleep. It notes that while genetics play a role, lifestyle changes like decreased sleep have contributed to rising obesity and diabetes rates. Sleep is influenced by biological and social factors in adolescents. Short sleep duration is linked to increased insulin resistance and BMI. The article reviews studies showing that sleep education and advice programs can improve sleep habits and duration in teens, with some evidence they may also positively impact metabolic health and weight. Larger and longer trials are still needed.

Insomnia is a sleep disorder characterized by difficulty falling asleep, staying asleep, or both. It can be short-term (less than a month) or long-term (lasting over a month). Insomnia is associated with daytime sleepiness, low energy, irritability, and depressed mood. It negatively impacts physical and mental health and is linked to conditions like depression, hypertension, and diabetes. Insomnia places a significant burden on individuals and society due to its effects on health, productivity, and costs of healthcare.
During middle age, women experience biological and psychological changes that can impact their health and well-being. Menopause is a major biological factor, leading to hormone deficiencies and increased risks of conditions like depression, osteoporosis, and heart disease. Symptoms of menopause vary between ethnic groups. While women experience more non-life threatening illnesses, men face more serious health issues. Stress can also weaken the immune system and increase health risks. Cognitive abilities evolve in middle adulthood, with fluid intelligence declining but crystallized intelligence and practical problem-solving improving through experience and education. Many people also develop more complex, relativistic thinking or strengthen their spiritual beliefs during this stage of life.
Aging is a natural process that occurs differently in individuals over time. It is characterized by cellular and physiological deterioration that increases vulnerability to disease and stress. While aging rates vary, it generally causes a decline in homeostasis and an increased risk of mortality. Physiological changes in aging include alterations in circulating hormone concentrations and glucose regulation. Epigenetic mechanisms also influence the aging process and genomic stability. Low-grade inflammation, known as inflammaging, increases with age and is associated with functional decline. Successful aging interventions aim to maintain modifiable risk factors like exposures, nutrition, cognition and exercise to optimize health in the aging process.

Microstomia, characterized by an abnormally small oral aperture, presents significant challenges in prosthodontic treatment, including limited access for examination, difficulties in impression making, and challenges with prosthesis insertion and removal. To manage these issues, customized impression techniques using sectional trays and elastomeric materials are employed. Prostheses may be designed in segments or with flexible materials to facilitate handling. Minimally invasive procedures and the use of digital technologies can enhance patient comfort. Education and training for patients on prosthesis care and maintenance are crucial for compliance. Regular follow-up and a multidisciplinary approach, involving collaboration with other specialists, ensure comprehensive care and improved quality of life for microstomia patients.

The Importance of Black Women Understanding the Chemicals in Their Personal C...bkling
Certain chemicals, such as phthalates and parabens, can disrupt the body's hormones and have significant effects on health. According to data, hormone-related health issues such as uterine fibroids, infertility, early puberty and more aggressive forms of breast and endometrial cancers disproportionately affect Black women. Our guest speaker, Jasmine A. McDonald, PhD, an Assistant Professor in the Department of Epidemiology at Columbia University in New York City, discusses the scientific reasons why Black women should pay attention to specific chemicals in their personal care products, like hair care, and ways to minimize their exposure.
The Ultimate Guide in Setting Up Market Research System in Health-TechGokul Rangarajan
How to effectively start market research in the health tech industry by defining objectives, crafting problem statements, selecting methods, identifying data collection sources, and setting clear timelines. This guide covers all the preliminary steps needed to lay a strong foundation for your research.
"Market Research it too text-booky, I am in the market for a decade, I am living research book" this is what the founder I met on the event claimed, few of my colleagues rolled their eyes. Its true that one cannot over look the real life experience, but one cannot out beat structured gold mine of market research.
Many 0 to 1 startup founders often overlook market research, but this critical step can make or break a venture, especially in health tech.
But Why do they skip it?
Limited resources—time, money, and manpower—are common culprits.
"In fact, a survey by CB Insights found that 42% of startups fail due to no market need, which is like building a spaceship to Mars only to realise you forgot the fuel."
Sudharsan Srinivasan
Operational Partner Pitchworks VC Studio
Overconfidence in their product’s success leads founders to assume it will naturally find its market, especially in health tech where patient needs, entire system issues and regulatory requirements are as complex as trying to perform brain surgery with a butter knife. Additionally, the pressure to launch quickly and the belief in their own intuition further contribute to this oversight. Yet, thorough market research in health tech could be the key to transforming a startup's vision into a life-saving reality, instead of a medical mishap waiting to happen.
Example of Market Research working
Innovaccer, founded by Abhinav Shashank in 2014, focuses on improving healthcare delivery through data-driven insights and interoperability solutions. Before launching their platform, Innovaccer conducted extensive market research to understand the challenges faced by healthcare organizations and the potential for innovation in healthcare IT.
Identifying Pain Points: Innovaccer surveyed healthcare providers to understand their difficulties with data integration, care coordination, and patient engagement. They found widespread frustration with siloed systems and inefficient workflows.
Competitive Analysis: Analyzed competitors offering similar solutions in healthcare analytics and interoperability. Identified gaps in comprehensive data aggregation, real-time analytics, and actionable insights.
Regulatory Compliance: Ensured their platform complied with HIPAA and other healthcare data privacy regulations. This compliance was crucial to gaining trust from healthcare providers wary of data security issues.
Customer Validation: Conducted pilot programs with several healthcare organizations to validate the platform's effectiveness in improving care outcomes and operational efficiency. Gathered feedback to refine features and user interface.
