The document discusses men's mental health and issues like stress and suicide. It notes that over 15 million sick days in the UK each year are due to mental health issues and lists common stressors like work, family, health and money. Signs of stress are discussed, as are the most common causes of male death over the last 100 years and global suicide rates. Ways to help oneself and look out for others are suggested, like talking, self-care, exercise and making small positive changes.
Men and women feel differently about the trials and tribulations in their life. These feelings manifest themselves into pyschosocial disorders such as drinking and suicides for men while women tend to cope better through social interaction. So how can men find ways to avoid the stigma and seek the help and support they need to work and live productive lives?
The stigma of mental health and mental illness can be deadly in market segments dominated by men. Historically, construction, maritime and manufacture are not perceived as work environmental where men can talk about their problems. As a consequence, men suffer in silence which affects their physical health and wellbeing. This is a global problem that impacts human performance, productivity and prosperity. The realization that male workers in traditional industries are just as fragile as other male workers in more stressful occupations such as finance and sales. This presentation only begins to focus on the issue but the impact can be catastrophic for the individual, the person's career, company, society, policy, and the economy.
What are the mental health problems that men face - and what are the ways they can be addressed? Jim Pollard from the Men's Health Forum lays out the latest research.

Substance abuse, also known as drug abuse, is a patterned use of a drug in which the user consumes the substance in amounts or with methods which are harmful to themselves or others, and is a form of the substance-related disorder.

Drug addiction is a chronic disease characterized by drug seeking and use that is compulsive, or difficult to control, despite harmful consequences.
Brain changes that occur over time with drug use challenge an addicted person’s self-control and interfere with their ability to resist intense urges to take drugs. This is why drug addiction is also a relapsing disease.
Relapse is the return to drug use after an attempt to stop. Relapse indicates the need for more or different treatment.
Most drugs affect the brain's reward circuit by flooding it with the chemical messenger dopamine. This overstimulation of the reward circuit causes the intensely pleasurable "high" that leads people to take a drug again and again.
The primary challenge facing the twenty-first century is to eliminate violence against women. At minimum, 1 in 3 women face violence that suppresses their political and civic participation. Until it is confronted, we will not be able to tackle peace holistically or sustainably, and our development dollars are not being used effectively. Like polio, Rotarians are key to meeting this challenge!
Research demonstrates that we all harbor unconscious biases. The good news is that enhanced awareness and training can create an inclusive culture that identifies and helps eliminate these hidden biases.
This talk was presented at the 2017 National Suicide Prevention Conference held in Brisbane. It was delivered by Glen Poole, Development Officer the Australian Men's Health Forum (AMHF) and draws on AMHF's 2016 position paper: "The Need For Male-Friendly Approaches to Suicide Prevention".
Multi Media Presentation: Problems of Well-Being and Mental Healthlinkert93
This power point is about the problems of well-being and mental health. It is important to understand that if you do not take care of your mental health issues it can lead to a serious mental illness.

This talk/workshop was presented at the Neighbourhood Houses Conference in George Town, Tasmania on 28th September 2017.
It was delivered by Glen Poole, Development Officer the Australian Men's Health Forum (AMHF) and focuses on the social determinants of men's health; the barriers that can prevent men accessing services and the common ingredients found in projects that engage with men effectively.
Engaging men in Neighbourhood Houses can sometimes require different approaches and ways of working. Some Neighbourhood Houses are looking to engage more men as service users or volunteers, and this session will look at how we may work to include more men in what we do. Glen will provide an overview of some of the key social issues than men and boys face and outline the common practices of male-friendly services, based on national and international research and best practice.
Glen Poole is the Development Officer for the Australian Men’s Health Forum, the peak body for male health in Australia focusing on the social issues that shape men and boys’ health and wellbeing. He has 20 years experience working with men and boys in the UK and Australia and is founder of the Stop Male Suicide project
This was the final event in the Population Patterns Seminar Series which explored the “silver separators”- divorce later in life.
Figures from the Office for National Statistics published in 2012 showed a huge rise in the divorce rate amongst those in their 60s, with an increase of 58% on the 2011 figure. The last 10 years have seen more and more older people part ways, despite divorce amongst the general population becoming less common. This has happened to such an extent that the over 60’s are now the fastest growing divorce group in the UK.
A variety of reasons have been suggested, including a reduction in the stigma surrounding divorce and couples no longer feeling obliged to stay together if their attitudes and needs change.
However, figures released by the ONS in June 2012 revealed that marriages involving older people were also rising faster than for other age groups – up by 21% for women and by 25% for men in their late sixties. Re-partnership is likely to be even higher than these figures suggest, as older people in a new relationship may not choose to remarry.
During the event the discussion explored a number of themes, including:
What factors have contributed to the rising rate of divorce amongst the over 60s?
How can older people’s relationships be better supported?
What challenges does ageing present to relationships?
How do care responsibilities effect relationships?
What are the potential ramifications of older couples separating?
Hard-hitting presentation about what is mental health with statistics that will open your eyes that this issue might be closer to home thank you think!

Preparing for a happy and successful retirementeph-hr
Financial planning is not the only area that one needs to consider when preparing for retirement. When the structure of work ends it can raise many questions. Some examples of these questions are how should I spend my time, what if I get bored and don’t like being retired and/or will spending so much time together with my partner be a good thing or not. Some people thrive and enjoy being retired while others can slip into periods of self-doubt and even depression once retired.

To truly innovate, we cannot afford to leave behind half our population. In recent years, there's been a push to increase the number of women and minorities in the science, technology, engineering, and maths (STEM) fields, but despite this push, the numbers have not really changed much in the last 14 years, and the Umbraco community is not immune to this phenomena. In this session, we'll be taking a deeper look at what we're up against, why we should be paying attention to it, and initiatives we can explore moving forward as we work to build a more inclusive, successful, and innovative community.

Estimated rate of suicide per 100,000 population (in 2016)
43. Samaritans Research :
Men and Suicide: Why it’s a social issue
Reveals that:
• men compare themselves against a ‘gold standard’ which prizes
power, control and invincibility;
• men in mid-life are now part of the ‘buffer’ generation, not sure
whether to be like their older, more traditional, strong, silent,
austere fathers or like their younger, more progressive,
individualistic sons;
• with the decline of traditional male industries, these men have
lost not only their jobs but also a source of masculine pride and
identity;
• men in mid-life remain overwhelmingly dependent on a female
partner for emotional support.
52. 9 ways to help yourself
• Talk to someone
• Look at what you’re eating (and drinking!) (and smoking!)
• Look at your sleeping habits
• Get some exercise
• Take some ‘you-time’
• Get some fresh air and some sunshine
• Make small changes
• Try CBT / yoga / meditation / healing sessions
• Talk to someone
53. Look out for friends, family, colleagues
• Look for the signs
• Be ready to listen
Look out for yourself
• Recognise your personal signs
• Find what works for you
• Don’t be afraid to talk
