Wing Man (Mandy) Kwan Social Studies Lesson Topic: Memorial Day Grade Level: Kindergarten Materials: Houghton Mifflin Harcourt SS Big Book P.36 “Memorial Day”, paper plates, construction paper (assorted colors), small american flags, the song “My Country ‘Tis of Thee” Vocabulary: memorial, remember, soldier, monument, statue, honor, wreath Access Prior Knowledge/build background Teacher asks/says: What does it mean to remember someone? Explain the different ways to remember people: photos, videos, or paintings. To remember soldiers that fought and died in wars for the USA, there are statues, monuments, and the MEMORIAL HOLIDAY (point to words on big book). Define the word “memorial”. Talk about and chart the following background info: 1) Memorial Day is celebrated on the last Monday of May each year 2) It used to be called “Decoration Day” 3) There are parades to honor the soldiers 4) Government offices are closed (i.e post office) **Play digital story here - the digital story would show clips of memorial day parades, show photographs of different USA service members (army, navy, air force, marines, etc), monuments, wreathes, etc. Background music: “My Country Tis of Thee” or other patriotic songs** Read aloud the text on the Big Book. Explain the definition of “proud”. What other feeling words are in the text? (sad) Have students show a sad face and proud face. Look at the photograph. What do you see? (US Marine Corps War Memorial; soldiers; a flag) Describe what is happening? (soldiers raising a flag; soldiers dressed in uniforms and marching) Activity: Make a memorial wreath: explain to students that on Memorial Day, people often place wreaths on the graves of those who died serving our country. Use paper plates, colored paper to cut leaves and flowers. Make a bow at the bottom. Optional Activity: A way to honor fallen soliders on Memorial Day is to have a parade. Hold a mini memorial day parade in the classroom. Hold small American flags, flowers, and sing “My Country Tis’ of Thee”
