The U.S. Navy Seabee Museum in Port Hueneme, California held a ribbon cutting ceremony for its new youth-oriented Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math (STEM) Center on June 6th. The center aims to tie STEM concepts to the historical ingenuity of the Seabees, Civil Engineer Corps, and Underwater Construction Teams. Funding for the exhibit came from a memorial fund created by U.S. Air Force Tech. Sgt. William Powell and his wife Jessica in honor of their daughter Kennedy who passed away in 2014 at 15 months old from a rare illness. The summer of 2010 saw a significant reduction in Navy off-duty fatalities compared to the previous year and 10-year average, establishing several new 10-year lows. Alcohol-related fatalities were down 71%. This dramatic decrease in mishaps was attributed to Sailors making good decisions and risk management, as well as following basic safety precautions. - 1. Memorial Day Weekend BRIEFINGPOINTS • Last Memorial Day, Sailors and Marines did a great job planning for success during the unofficial start of summer. Nonetheless, 1 Marine lost his life behind the wheel of a motor vehicle. While this is significantly below the five-year average of losses to recreation and motor vehicle mishaps during the holiday weekend, it still represents a tragic and preventable loss to the Fleet. • Another 106 Sailors and Marines were injured in motor vehicle mishaps, sport- ing activities, or other off-duty pursuits. Most injuries were minor, but they definite- ly ruined a good time. • The good news is the vast majority of those mishaps that occurred last year were completely preventable with solid risk management practices. • If you plan to take advantage of the three-day weekend to travel outside of the local area, use the Travel Risk Planning System (TRiPS) to enhance your chanc- es for success on the road. This online risk assessment tool will help identify and mitigate potential risk factors associated with your planned travel. To date, no naval personnel have died while traveling on a TRiPS-assessed journey. • Memorial Day weekend means the first trip to the beach of the season for many families. Make sure everyone knows how to swim. If you need lessons, contact MWR or a community pool. Obey posted signs and lifeguards and keep a close eye on small kids. • Sailors and Marines may have friends over for Memorial Day parties. Those who choose to drink and serve alcohol must remember moderation and respon- sible drinking are keys to success in the social arena. The vast majority of Sailors and Marines do a great job of this. DUIs and other alcohol-related incidents are going down across the Fleet; however, overconsumption remains a concern. • Statistics show that alcohol is often a contributing factor in sexual assaults. Al- cohol is no excuse for criminal behavior and everyone is expected to manage the risk to avoid being a victim or a perpetrator. Don’t let a preventable mishap constrain your summer fun and enjoyment!
