The candidate is seeking graduate employment opportunities in the petroleum industry and has relevant experience. During an internship with McDermott International, the candidate gained exposure to offshore engineering and subsea aspects. The candidate is now pursuing a Master's degree in subsea engineering at the University of Strathclyde to further technical expertise and pursue a career in the petroleum industry upon graduating. Relevant experience includes tasks such as verifying riser lengths and reviewing pile driving studies during a previous internship.
1. Sir/Madam,
I am currently completing my postgraduate degree in subsea engineering at the
University of Strathclyde, Glasgow and wish to apply for the graduate employment opportunities
available. My initial passion towards the petroleum industry occurred during my internship at
McDermott International, Dubai, as a fourth year civil engineering student. Through the two
months, I was exposed to various aspects along with the compelling lifestyles of this industry. I
was entirely captivated by the process involved and it has gradually become my professional
aspiration to pursue a career in this industry.
While at the American University in Dubai, I was only exposed to onshore civil
engineering, however the initial two months at McDermott International allowed me to
experience another aspect of engineering, i.e., Offshore Engineering. This sudden influx of a
different type of engineering intrigued me immensely. During my initial stay at the company, I
was tasked with reviewing pile driving studies, and performing hand based verifications on tie-in
support platforms, pile installation checks, hand based rigging and pad-eye checks for jackets
and topsides along with designing an MS Excel file to assist in the reinforcement verifications of
concrete sleepers. Furthermore, my second spell at McDermott International was completely
field based; it involved, learning through observation and following through with requests made
by the senior field engineers. I was assigned to a team in charge of a cable lay operation in the
Safaniya oil field of Saudi Arabia. Much of my time there involved the rig-up and load out of
several key materials, including the trencher, extension of the crane tracks, replacing of tensioner
track pads, etc. In addition, I had also witnessed a transpooling operation for a 16", 18km long
cable at my time there and was asked to keep track and produce daily progress sheets for the
senior field engineers and the operation engineer, while keeping track of the materials load-out
list of the barge itself. Moreover, I had also began to research more about the petroleum industry,
and the working of a subsea platform, with the subject of study being the Ormen Lange gas field
and the pursuit for oil in the Arctic regions. The branch of subsea engineering is currently one of
the most rapidly advancing industries and after conversing with many colleagues and superiors, I
have decided on pursuing a Master’s degree in subsea engineering with the University of
Strathclyde, Glasgow, as it is the iconic industry of the future.
My goals for the near future are to attain the much required technical expertise,
confidence and competence to pursue a career in the petroleum industry. Upon completing my
postgraduate studies, I hope to make great strides in the field of subsea engineering at this
establishment as a strong and successful person. My CV is enclosed for your consideration.
Please contact me if you need further information. I shall look forward to the opportunity to
discuss my application with you at an interview.
Kind Regards,
Melroy Savio Mascarenhas

Education
University of Strathclyde — (MSc.) Subsea Engineering, 2014 - 2015
Key Subjects: Marine Pipelines, Subsurface Technology, Risers and Mooring Lines, Dynamics
of Floating Offshore Installations, and Subsea Systems And Installation.
Group Project: The aim of the project was to develop new innovative opportunities and
solutions for the oil and gas industry, while simultaneously researching and applying advanced
technologies related to subsea engineering. The group titled Blue Water Solutions developed an
inventive subsea structure termed as The Deep Sea Oil Whale along with a Subsea Station. The
Oil Whale would essentially be used as a transportation prospect for an undeveloped field near a
developed network.
Personal Dissertation: Development of a marine riser/riserless system for well stimulation.
American University in Dubai — (BSc.) Civil Engineering, 2009 - 2013
Key Subjects: Geotechnical Engineering I&II, Reinforced Concrete I&II, Water and Wastewater
Engineering, Hydraulic Engineering, Structural Steel Design, and Structural Analysis.
Group Project: The aim of the project was to build a bridge and a tunnel with a 60m span across
six lanes of traffic in each direction while tackling the various departments of engineering which
include transportation, geotechnical, construction management and, water and environmental
engineering.
Projects & Activities
Designed steel structures and steel members.
Designed and analyzed two-way concrete slabs.
Designed transportation system for mountainous regions; including curve and intersection
designs along with the phase analysis for traffic signals.
Designed a storm drainage system for a given area in Dubai.
Designed and analyzed an eight legged jacket template.
3. Designed and performed an intermediate comparative study on SCRs and lazy wave risers.
Conducted geotechnical analysis on various types of soil due to foundation bearing.
Official student member of the American Society of Civil Engineers and IMarEST.
