Michael Ondaatje was born in 1943 in Sri Lanka to Dutch, Singhalese, Tamil, and British ancestors. He spent his early childhood in Sri Lanka but moved to England with his mother in 1949. Ondaatje later immigrated to Canada in 1962. He has had a successful career as a novelist, poet, and filmmaker, winning numerous awards including the Booker Prize. Throughout his work, Ondaatje explores themes of cultural identity and multiculturalism as he draws from his experiences growing up in Sri Lanka and living in Canada.
