A team of 6 comprising Gilsanz Murray Steficek (GMS) engineers Ramon Gilsanz, Cathy Huang, Jessica Mandrick and Joe Mugford, Cerea Steficek from the Earth Sciences department at Northeastern University and Mehmet Celebi from the United States Geological Survey (USGS) accompanied by Sheng-Jhih Jhuang from the National Center of Research for Earthquake Engineering in Taiwan (NCREE) visited the earthquake stricken city of Tainan and vicinity to survey, study and document damage and site-related observations from the recent 6.4 Meinong Earthquake. GMS coordinated this effort with the Earthquake Engineering Research Institute (EERI), and the Applied Technology Council (ATC).

Benning Park Community Center - Community Meeting (September 2015)
The community meeting discussed renovation plans for the Benning Park Community Center with a $5 million budget. Representatives from the Department of Parks and Recreation and Department of General Services presented the renovation process, timeline, and list of needed accessibility, safety, security, and infrastructure upgrades. The community was invited to provide input on desired improvements. Next steps include selecting an architectural/engineering firm in the fall and developing conceptual drawings with another community meeting scheduled for November.
City Council 9-18-12 Avenue P
The document discusses the history of flooding issues along Avenue P in the city. It notes that most homes were built in the 1940s-1950s and flooding has been reported for decades, exacerbated by increased development. A 2000 drainage plan ranked Avenue P as the #2 priority problem area. At neighborhood meetings in 2011, residents discussed the longstanding drainage issues. The Meinong Earthquake which occurred on February 6, 2016 affected several categories of building stock for which risk identification programs have been developed by NCREE.
Mixed-use three to five story structures are a typical building type in the city of Tainan. The ground floor is an open front commercial or manufacturing space, which is laterally a soft story. The upper floors are residential and extend over a covered sidewalk, with column supports at the front of the building. NCREE has an established “street house” program which provides criteria for homeowners to evaluate and retrofit these structures. This program, as well as damage and structural deficiencies related to this type of structure, were discussed. Additionally, Taiwan’s evaluation and retrofit program for school buildings, which identifies buildings with seismic deficiencies and determines whether or not a retrofit is warranted, was discussed.Recommended

The new complex at Quinnipiac University York Hill Campus includes a 141,000 sf twin sports arena, a 1,800 bed crescent-shaped dormitory, 5 story free-standing parking garage for approximately 2,000 cars, 26 smaller stand-alone dormitories totaling 636 beds and an 85,000 sf Student Center with the campus’ central mechanical plant in the basement, campus dining areas and student activity spaces.

This new 6-story commercial building in the SoHo Cast Iron Historic District replaces a two-story taxpayer building. The new steel framed structure features a terra cotta rain screen and glass curtain wall facade system reflects the openness ratio of the later cast iron buildings in the district. The entire 52,000 square foot building is leased by Nike.
Understanding Resilience through a Musical Analogy
Seismologists, earthquake engineers and seismic code experts understand the science of earth that moves and the structures built on it, but many of the concepts involved may be too abstract for architects, builders and the public. This presentation offers an analogy to help explain seismic design and presents three different construction techniques used in Chile, Japan and the United States that counter an earthquake’s effects.
The ground exerts seismic forces upon a building following a particular spectral acceleration, like a musician playing an instrument according to a given score. In both cases, there are several elements that determine how energy is transferred, and describe how it is felt.
New World Symphony - Phil Murray
The state-of-the-art New World Center opened to critical acclaim January 25, 2011. The new home of the New World Symphony, this innovative facility features an acoustic music space of 756 seats which can be adjusted to suit full orchestras or solo performers. The theater is equipped as an Internet2 classroom and transmission facility with large acoustic “sails” which double as projection screens. Performances can be projected onto a 7000 square foot screen-wall outside, facing the adjacent park. Other program elements include public lobby spaces, practice and teaching classrooms, backstage support and additional administrative offices.
The structure is steel braced frames tied by the roof diaphragm and is built to resist hurricanes of south Florida.

Reinventing Woolworth: Adaptive Reuse of an Historic Skyscraper
This presentation presents a case study of structural and logistical issues involved in the adaptive reuse of an early 20th-century skyscraper, and outlines the case for achieving sustainability through such repurposing. Through skillful structural design, the redevelopment of the Woolworth Building serves as a case study of successfully repositioning an underutilized 1913 office tower to serve a new market – luxury residential. The Woolworth Building’s historic context, existing structural systems and scope of the residential conversion is itemized, while particular technical concerns are explained.

GMS designed the structure for this “L-shaped” residential building approximately 588,000 SF. The 575 foot length will be built without an expansion joint. The building is cast-in-place flat plate concrete floors supported on piles with a height that ranges from one story to thirty-one stories. The street level will be filled with retail space.
GMS also performed the structural Special Inspections for cast in place concrete, precast concrete, welding, bolting and steel erection.

The 2-day cycle is commonly used in New York City for residential concrete projects. Given that a floor is poured every other day, instant communication and infield coordination are key to maintain the fast paced schedule and minimize mistakes. The structural engineer needs to be fully immersed in the day-to-day construction process to ensure successful and timely completion of the project. A case study of a 600,000 square feet residential concrete flat plate building will be presented to illustrate the construction process in a 2-day cycle. The typical floor plate consisted of 58 apartments with an average floor area of 700 square feet per apartment, which resulted in congestion of mechanical, electrical, and plumbing (MEP) components. As detailed coordination of the MEP trades occurred during construction, the structural engineer played a crucial role in ensuring that the placement of conduits and risers did not compromise the capacity and the integrity of the structure. Though ACI-318 provides some guidance on how to address embedded conduits and slab openings adjacent to columns and walls, the provisions were found to be insufficient when dealing with the complexities and constraints present in the project. The construction team communicated directly with the structural engineer, but a formal submittal and RFI process was also put in place for record keeping and to keep all parties informed. The case study will illustrate the common coordination problems that occur in the field, where they are likely to happen, and strategies to minimize these problems in future projects. The presentation is targeted towards structural engineers involved in building design and construction of reinforced concrete buildings. The case study and construction practices presented are from the New York City region but the ideas presented are applicable to other parts of the country. Through examination of the lessons learned, the audience can better identify potential coordination and communication issues in future projects and resolve them quickly as they arise.
2015 Structures Congress - Probabilistic Performance Based Design
Multi-objective optimization for the probabilistic seismic performance based design of an example moment frame steel structure is presented. Direct economic and social losses associated with seismic events, which are of interest in the current recommended frameworks for the performance based design of structures, are considered in the optimization problem defined. Three optimization objectives are selected: the initial construction cost, modeled as the weight of the structural system; expected annual economic loss associated with damage resulting from seismic hazard; and expected annual social loss resulting from seismic hazard induced damage. Hazus recommended procedures are applied in the economic and social loss calculations which include the fragility functions used in the damage analyses and injury event models implemented in the social loss calculations. The multiobjective optimization method uses a non-dominated sorting genetic algorithm strategy. The optimization results for the multiple objectives are presented and discussed in the form of Pareto fronts. Engineering demand parameters implemented for the seismic loss analysis are inter-story drifts and peak floor accelerations and are obtained using inelastic time history analysis for the ground motions associated with various seismic hazard levels. To illustrate the design procedure, loss parameters are calculated for an example steel structure located in Los Angeles, CA.

837 Washington Street is a new torquing tower that rises out of an existing landmark 2-story Art Moderne style brick warehouse built in 1938. GMS preserved the original façade while building a new steel exoskeleton with sloping columns and twisting floor plates. GMS achieved the intricate design by creating innovative plate girders and pre-fabricated frame connections. The structure was thermally isolated passing only the beam web through the building envelope with carbon fiber thermal break shims at these connections.

Each year, architects, engineers and design students convene to build life-size structures from unopened cans of food, then compete for awards like “Most Cans,” “Best Use of Labels” and “Structural Ingenuity.” All the cans are later donated to City Harvest for distribution to those in need. The 2-day cycle is commonly used in New York City for residential concrete projects. Given that a floor is poured every other day, instant communication and infield coordination are key to maintain the fast paced schedule and minimize mistakes. The structural engineer needs to be fully immersed in the day-to-day construction process to ensure successful and timely completion of the project. A case study of a 600,000 square feet residential concrete flat plate building will be presented to illustrate the construction process in a 2-day cycle. The typical floor plate consisted of 58 apartments with an average floor area of 700 square feet per apartment, which resulted in congestion of mechanical, electrical, and plumbing (MEP) components. As detailed coordination of the MEP trades occurred during construction, the structural engineer played a crucial role in ensuring that the placement of conduits and risers did not compromise the capacity and the integrity of the structure. Though ACI-318 provides some guidance on how to address embedded conduits and slab openings adjacent to columns and walls, the provisions were found to be insufficient when dealing with the complexities and constraints present in the project. The construction team communicated directly with the structural engineer, but a formal submittal and RFI process was also put in place for record keeping and to keep all parties informed. The case study will illustrate the common coordination problems that occur in the field, where they are likely to happen, and strategies to minimize these problems in future projects. The presentation is targeted towards structural engineers involved in building design and construction of reinforced concrete buildings. The case study and construction practices presented are from the New York City region but the ideas presented are applicable to other parts of the country. Through examination of the lessons learned, the audience can better identify potential coordination and communication issues in future projects and resolve them quickly as they arise.
2015 Structures Congress - Probabilistic Performance Based Design
Multi-objective optimization for the probabilistic seismic performance based design of an example moment frame steel structure is presented. Direct economic and social losses associated with seismic events, which are of interest in the current recommended frameworks for the performance based design of structures, are considered in the optimization problem defined. Three optimization objectives are selected: the initial construction cost, modeled as the weight of the structural system; expected annual economic loss associated with damage resulting from seismic hazard; and expected annual social loss resulting from seismic hazard induced damage. Hazus recommended procedures are applied in the economic and social loss calculations which include the fragility functions used in the damage analyses and injury event models implemented in the social loss calculations. The multiobjective optimization method uses a non-dominated sorting genetic algorithm strategy. The optimization results for the multiple objectives are presented and discussed in the form of Pareto fronts. Engineering demand parameters implemented for the seismic loss analysis are inter-story drifts and peak floor accelerations and are obtained using inelastic time history analysis for the ground motions associated with various seismic hazard levels. To illustrate the design procedure, loss parameters are calculated for an example steel structure located in Los Angeles, CA.

837 Washington Street is a new torquing tower that rises out of an existing landmark 2-story Art Moderne style brick warehouse built in 1938. GMS preserved the original façade while building a new steel exoskeleton with sloping columns and twisting floor plates. GMS achieved the intricate design by creating innovative plate girders and pre-fabricated frame connections. The structure was thermally isolated passing only the beam web through the building envelope with carbon fiber thermal break shims at these connections.

Structural Integrity of Flat Slabs
The document summarizes a presentation given at the Structures Congress 2017 that compared the structural integrity of flat slabs designed according to ACI 318 and New York City building codes using alternative load path analysis. The presentation described the research inspiration, case studies designed for each code, an applied element method used for analysis, modeling techniques, results showing load redistribution after column removal was similar between codes at around 26%, and conclusions that bottom reinforcement capacity controlled for both codes but NYC code had higher integrity steel requirements.
Overview of M7.8 4/16/16 Ecuador Earthquake
On April 16, 2016 a M7.8 struck along the subduction trench on western Ecuador near the town of Muisne in the province of Esmeraldas. The earthquake caused the collapse of hundreds of buildings some as far as Guayaquil, Ecuador’s largest city located 260 km southeast of the epicenter leading to 663 deaths, more than 27,000 injured and approximately 30,000 displaced residents living in public shelters. The largest death tolls occurred in the cities of Pedernales, Portoviejo and Manta where 82% of the casualties occurred.
The presentation summarizes the performance on bridges, dams, electrical substations, highways, ports, airports, buildings, etc.
Simplified Analysis to Predict Collapse Resistance
Based on the experimental and numerical studies performed by NIST an Alternative Load Path Analysis (ALPA) guideline is being developed by the Disproportionate Collapse Technical Committee to provide design, analysis and modeling methods for engineers in practice to reduce the vulnerability of steel and concrete structures to disproportionate collapse. This article presents a summary of chapter 3 of this guideline, titled Simplified Analysis to Predict Collapse Resistance. Chapter 3 focuses on simplified analysis methods that can be applied in form of spreadsheets or closed form solutions to predict the collapse capacity of steel and concrete buildings.

the state-of-the-art Deeplabv3+ architecture with the ResNet18 backbone. The
model is rigorously trained and evaluated, exhibiting remarkable performance
metrics, including an impressive global accuracy of 99.286%, a high-class accuracy of 82.191%, a mean intersection over union (IoU) of 79.900%, a weighted
IoU of 98.620%, and a Boundary F1 (BF) score of 83.303%. Notably, a detailed comparative analysis with existing methods showcases the superiority of
our proposed model. These findings underscore the model’s competence in precise brain tumor localization, underscoring its potential to revolutionize medical

This paper describes a speed control device for generating electrical energy on an electricity network based on the doubly fed induction generator (DFIG) used for wind power conversion systems. At first, a double-fed induction generator model was constructed. A control law is formulated to govern the flow of energy between the stator of a DFIG and the energy network using three types of controllers: proportional integral (PI), sliding mode controller (SMC) and second order sliding mode controller (SOSMC). Their different results in terms of power reference tracking, reaction to unexpected speed fluctuations, sensitivity to perturbations, and resilience against machine parameter alterations are compared. MATLAB/Simulink was used to conduct the simulations for the preceding study. Multiple simulations have shown very satisfying results, and the investigations demonstrate the efficacy and power-enhancing capabilities of the suggested control system.
