Each supervisor outlines their experience in early childhood education, philosophy of teaching and learning, and role supporting students in field placements. 3. Frances Quinn-Ford

Began working as a field placement supervisor January 2012 and
have now completed 8 semesters.
Current Connection to field: As well as being a field
placement supervisor for Centennial College, for the past
twelve years I have been employed by the school board as a
Parenting and Family Literacy Instructor.
Personal Philosophy: Working in the field of early childhood
education over the past 27 years, I have seen many changes to
our incredible field. The one constant that I have noticed is no
matter how theories practices change the best early childhood
educators have one common goal. That goal is to provide a
program that meets the social, emotional and physical needs of
the children they are working with. Meeting those needs
involves understanding that a child is not alone but comes with
a family and that we must ensure that we work together,
whether the child is in daycare or in a parent child program, it
is imperative that we make connections with the whole family
in order to provide a program that meets all the needs of the
child. Every childfamily is unique and it is our responsibility to
provide programs which allow for individual learning styles
and to never forget that each child has something valuable to
contribute and our job is to nourish and encourage that
contribution.

I have been working as a field placement supervisor for
Centennial College for 6 years. I am a manager at a child
care centre and operate our offsite location. I have worked
there for the last 13 years and could not picture myself in
any other line of work.
I truly believe Early Childhood Educators impact children
and their learning. They are our future and the more we
guide, nurture, support and care for them the more they
will become all they are meant to be. I feel that helping
and giving this same positive support to students is key to
their success. I offer continual guidance, encouragement
and feedback through the semester I have with each of the
students.

experience in the field. I am currently employed with Durham

Personal philosophy of teaching and learning :
I believe we are all students and learning is ongoing and never
ending. One should never stop learning. As a facilitator I
enjoy molding students into great, confident ECE’s. I enjoy
sharing the knowledge we have learnt over the years. Sharing
knowledge is a great feeling. Making a difference in the lives of
others is so rewarding.
I enjoy working with young children, setting the foundation for
early learning. I work as an ECE creating an environment in the
classroom which promotes reading, writing and math skills
fostering a strong foundation for future learning. I facilitate
experiences that promote each child’s physical, cognitive,
language, emotional, social and creative development and well-
being. I lead children in developmentally age appropriate
activities where they learn through their environment and
through play. I also create opportunities for creative
expression through media of art, dramatic play, music and
physical fitness. I take all this knowledge and impart it on our
students. This is such a rewarding feeling.
Sharifa Ishmael

I’ve been supporting students in the field part time with Centennial College
for the past 6 years. Also, over the past 7 years I’ve been working full time as a
Child Care Centre Supervisor with the City of Toronto in various locations.
This experience has given me a wealth of knowledge and transferable skills
that I’m able to use in the supervision of students.
Personal Philosophy:
I believe that children learn best when given the opportunity to naturally
discover and explore their environment. When children are provided with an
environment that is inclusive, safe, healthy, inviting and rich with hands on
opportunities they grow in all areas of development. I also strongly believe
that children need to be surrounded by educators who embrace their
inquisitive nature and genuinely see the importance of providing
opportunities that will enhance their learning experiences.
Early childhood educators who observe, and actively listen to children so they
can prepare and implement a meaningful curriculum will create positive
outcomes and impacts in the lives of children.
As educators we have a responsibility provide activities and opportunities
that meet children’s developmental needs and interests and encourage their
independence and inquisitive nature, embrace open discussion, provide
opportunities to build relationships and simply allow children to learn
through play.
As a filed placement supervisor I feel it is my responsibility to share my
philosophy and ensure that students feel safe where they've been placed and
supported by me. My hope is that students will be exposed to positive
experiences and gain a wealth of knowledge they can take with them when
they enter the field of ECE.

5. Dawn McLeod

For the past two years I have being supporting students.
For the past 15 years I worked with children and their families in
various settings such as licensed childcare, shelters, community
health center ministry special services at home programs and
doing placement with the City of Toronto Children’s Services
Special Service Unit. Now working full time in the Durham School
Board teaching children. In addition, have learned how to deal
with a wide variety of people with different cultural backgrounds,
including visible and invisible challenges.
My personal philosophy of teaching and learning evolved from
many years of working with children and their families. It is also
base on various educational principles: learning theory, cognitive,
functioning, reflective practices, and diversity issues, instructional
planning assessment. I believe that every child learns at different
pace and bring a unique set of abilities and learning styles to the
classroom. As a result, children should be given the tools to
actively engage in the pursuit of knowledge in creative and
meaningful ways. I valve the diversity of learning styles and the
unique perspective both individual and cultural that children
bring to the classroom. This I believe will serve to enrich the lives
of others.

I have been working in the Early Childhood Education field for 28 years. Nine
of those years were spent working as a Parent and Literacy Program co-
ordinator for the Toronto District School Board. Currently, I am a licensed
home child care consultant. I also co-ordinate, plan and facilitate adult
workshops on early childhood development, curriculum planning, early
intervention, stress management, communication and conflict resolution. I am
familiar with the Ontario Early Learning Framework and current Day Care
Government rules and regulations. In addition to my day job, I volunteer
within the Chinese community. I am currently the co-president an
organization which supports individuals with developmental disabilities and
their families. Within this organization I plan and co-ordinate programs for
young children and youths with extra support.
Personal Philosophy of Teaching and Learning and/or Early Education
for young children: I believe in interactive learning. Clear and responsive
communication is important when supporting students. I also respect
individuals with different learning styles and abilities.
I believe every child should have equal access to a secured and an enriched
early learning environment. Children learn through encouragement and praise.
Curriculum planning has to reflect individual child’s needs and interest. I have
supported field placement students at Centennial since 2011.

Personal Philosophy of Teaching and Learning:
Children cannot be categorized nor be considered
simple. Each child`s individual uniqueness and
diverse differences must be fostered through a
learning environment that depicts an image of
warmth, acceptance and encouragement. The title we
hold as “Educators” allows us to provide them with
this atmosphere that is so immensely valuable. Being
fully committed to make a difference in a child`s life
is an essential tool and belief that should be
embedded in all Early Childhood Educators.

Hello my name is Loris Bennett and I look forward to supporting you
in field placement. My Background and experiences is on the inclusion
of children with disabilities in early learning education and care
environments. For the past 25 years I have worked in various capacity
supporting children and their families. I am a Special Needs Consultant
as well as faculty in Centennial College’s Early Childhood Education
and Early Childhood Resource Consultant programs. My interest and
research is on professional development and training for early
childhood educators particularly focusing on inclusive practices.
Correspondently, I am keenly aware of the importance of field
practicum as it is the foundation for early childhood educators (
students) applying acquired skills and knowledge (bringing theory to
practice) in early learning and care environments with children. As
such, a primary focus is to facilitate an array of experiences for you
during your field practicum so that you will be able to practice, share
your skills and knowledge as well as gaining new knowledge. The early
years are the foundation for lifelong learning; as such investment in
children and quality early childhood programs is the cornerstone for all
stakeholders. As educators you are making a significant contribution to
the formative years of children. I wish you success in your field
placement and I look forward to teaching and learning with you on
this part on your Journey.

7. Marsha Briscoe

My name is Marsha Briscoe. I have been an E.C.E. for over 20
years and have been supporting students for 6 years at
Centennial College.
I have enjoyed every minute of it. I currently work for the
Toronto District School Board as a Parent Worker, which is a
program that offers Family Literacy that develops early literacy
and numeracy skills which provides the foundation for ongoing
learning.
My personal philosophy about early education for young
children is that children need to be exposed to stimulating and
challenging play based activities that help facilitate problem
solving and curiosity about the world around them. I believe
that children bring these experiences to new learning situations
which help to lay down the ground work for a solid foundation
in education. I feel that as an E.C.E, it is our role to help
support this learning through giving all children the
opportunity and freedom to explore in a safe and nurturing
environment. The most important thing that I have learned and
truly believe is that all children are unique and learn in
different ways, and we E.C.E.’s should be able to support all
kinds of learning.

Personal Philosophy of Teaching and Learning and/or Early
Education for young children:
Many apply but only a select number are chosen to join one of the
most critical professions in the world. As an EC Educator you are
creating the foundation on which your students will be building
their life-long learning. To ensure this foundation does not
develop any cracks, you must ask questions (you have access to a
large number of experts in your chosen profession between your
college and your placement), learn from your mistakes (if you do
something incorrect, find out the right way and practice it) and
let your students know that you care about them (through
positive facial expressions along with positive words). All children
can learn no matter their learning style. You are the conduit to
make that happen as an educator. Remember for every problem
there is a solution. Tell me your problem and together we will
find the solution.
Shelley Hill

How long supporting students in Field for Centennial: 1 year
I have a B.A. in Child Studies from Brock University and I currently
work as an R.E.C.E. and Child and Youth Worker at Kinark Child and
Family Services. I consult to E.C.E.’s and Teachers who have children
with Mental Health Difficulties in their classes. I work for the 0-6 year
old program and also teach the Triple P Parenting Course to parents
and work in homes providing parenting strategies and coaching for
children 2-7 years old. Previously I created and worked as the E.C.E. at
the Kinark Therapeutic Day Nursery.
Personal Philosophy of Teaching and Learning and/or Early
Education for young children:
I feel that Early Childhood education should
capitalize on spontaneous events in order to support child-initiated
learning and to promote learning that arouses curiosity and
imagination. I believe in educating the whole child through a
developmentally appropriate balance of guided exploration, discovery,
hands-on experiences, student-directed learning, and free-play which
prepares them for continued success throughout school. I believe that
play is the most important process through which young children
learn.

9. Michelle Joseph

Supervision History: Field Supervisor Since Winter 2010
Current Connection to Early Childhood Education: I am
currently employed full time as a Designated Early Childhood
Educator (DECE) with the Durham District School Board.
Personal Philosophy: I believe that the early learning years of a
child is the most important years of an individual’s life! As a
Registered Early Childhood Educator, I am a professional who
specialize in enhancing the developmental growth of children. It is
my responsibility to provide a rich, stimulating play based
environment for the children in my care. It is my passion and
determination to ensure I provide learning opportunities that
encourage child guided inquiry play. I believe that children are
capable and curious; and that through play, can answer many “I
wonder...?” questions that they may have.
Hands on play based learning should be used to reinforce the
curriculum goals and objectives that are outlined for our students.
Incorporating children’s interest into daily planning is a great way
to have the children take charge of their learning.
Knowing that I play an important role is preparing children to
grow into competent individuals, is a very intrinsic feeling. I have
been in the Early Childhood Education field since 1990 and I know
that this is the right profession for me.

I graduated from the ECE program at Ryerson
University in 1996. Since then I have enjoyed being
involved in the field through my work in Child
Care centres, home daycares and the school
system.
My personal philosophy on teaching and learning
is to provide children with a rich and stimulating
environment where they feel safe to explore,
initiate learning and feel free to express
themselves.

I am a Registered Early Childhood Educator with a
strong educational background and years of
experience working with children, families, and
early learning professionals. I currently work as
an Early Literacy Specialist for York Region.
I am actively involved in mentoring children and
youth in my community.
I am passionate about enhancing children`s
learning through play and I place a strong
emphasis on the importance of quality
interactions and connecting with young children.
I am involved in consultations, training, and
workshops for parents, caregivers, and
professionals to assist them in how to support
children’s early literacy and early numeracy
development. My life goal is to teach minds, touch
hearts, and transform lives.
I am a busy mom with two wonderful children
whom I am totally crazy about.

11. Anusha Narendran

Since January 2012, I have had the privilege of being a field
placement supervisor for Centennial College where I have been
able to support students at their placements. I have a full time
position as the Manager of Children’s Programs and Services at
Malvern Family Centre. I have successfully obtained a Bachelor of
Arts degree in Early Childhood Education from Ryerson University
and a Diploma in Early Childhood Education from Centennial
College.
I have over 10 years of experience working with children in various
age groups and developmental stages. I held a position as a part
time instructor for the Early Childcare Assistant program at a
private college in Toronto. In the past, I was involved with
working in childcare centers, schools, OEYC programs, after school
programs and family support programs. I have a strong
professional background in volunteer management, family support
and community practice.
My personal philosophy for teaching and learning is putting
students first and allowing them to learn through experiencing.
This allows me to adapt to the needs of an individual student and
to create an environment where students can learn in a way that
best suits them.
Melissa Pryce

I have been supporting students in field for Centennial for 5 years, and
have enjoyed every minute of it. Current connection to the Field of
Early Childhood Education involves being a registered member of the
College of ECE. Within my daily work as a Literacy Specialist I support
and coordinate family literacy programs, which emphasizes on
enhancing early literacy strategies between caregivers and children
birth to 6 years old. Learning and development is another passion that
keeps me current in field through teaching various ECE courses.
I believe education is a systematic component to learning skills and
gaining knowledge. In order to progress to the next level, individuals
need to acquire the skills and be able to transfer their knowledge to the
appropriate context or situation within society I view skills as building
blocks taught from a basic level and progressing to a level of mastery.
Building on the fundamentals of learning includes a multitude of
sources and experiences throughout the course of life, which is
fostered within an institutional setting and within the surrounding
community. Empowering students to develop from their experiences
with the assistance of an educator whether it is a parent, teacher, or
significant other, is key to fostering optimal learning and achievement.
I believe a teaching and learning environment should encompass a
conducive setting to learning by respecting a diverse learner centered
approach, which fosters inclusion and safety.

* Trainer/Consultant – currently working on a project

sessions for staff . Volunteer in a special education
recovery reading and math program for Grade 1-5 in
TDSB school.
My teaching philosophy is based on a mentoring
model that is grounded in learner centred practice,
reflective practice and critical thinking. I strongly
believe in the motto that it takes “a village to raise a
child” and that as role models, early childhood

I have been working in the child care profession since 1992,
and graduated as an Early Childhood Educator in 2001.
During my years of working in partnership with children,
families, and other child care professionals, I have gained
the knowledge and skills required to effectively support
students pursuing a career in Early Childhood Education.
Personal Philosophy:
I strongly believe that children need a safe and nurturing
environment that will provide them with a strong
foundation for lifelong learning.
As Early Childhood Educators, it is important that we
actively respond to children’s curiosity and provide them
with an abundance of learning opportunities through play.

Please allow me to introduce myself. I’m Lesley Skelton-
Dunfield and I have been supporting students in the Early
Childhood Education program at Centennial College since
January of 2014 as a Field Practicum Supervisor.
My career and interests are deeply rooted in Early Childhood
Education. As a Teacher and R.E.C.E myself, I think it is of high
importance to take my knowledge and skills I have learned and
share them with a new generation of educators. As a Practicum
Supervisor I must be able to listen, model and partner with my
placement candidates to assist them in their goal of becoming
Early Childhood Educators. My personal philosophy of
teaching and learning is that as educators we must collaborate
with each other and work in a team effort to deliver quality
learning and developmentally appropriate programming to out
students whether it be in a child care facility, school
environment or in the community at large. All learners deserve
fair and inclusive learning, in an anti-oppressive environment
and to be provided positive social and emotional experiences
that build skills to reach their maximum potential.

My name is Monique Griffin, I graduated from Centennial College
in 2002. I have been supporting students in the field of Early
Childhood Education since 2006. Currently, I am an elementary
school teacher.
My personal philosophy of teaching and learning:
It is important to provide an educational environment that offers
an opportunity for the interests of students to become visible.
This motivation can develop from within the learner. Educators
are trained to recognize students’ needs, their interests, to set
clear definitions of limits, structure and spontaneity, experiences
that challenge and the call to practice previously acquired skills.
Often, parents are eager to become an active participant in their
child’s life at home and in the school, but are hesitant to step
forth because they are not sure of which direction to take. It is
imperative as educators not to judge parents for actions that we
might not agree with. Instead, be good role models to their
students and provide assistance to parents to encourage “their”
relationship with the school, community and their home.

I have been working with the ECE students since January
2006. Prior to this I volunteered in a TCDSB Linc program
for parents and children. While the parents were taking
English classes I worked in the nursery school program.
The majority of my career was with the City of Toronto,
Children’s Services. I started as a program staff and
eventually worked my way to centre supervisor. Throughout
these years I supervised seven centres throughout the city
and worked with many staff, parents and children.
My philosophy is solely based on the fact that children are
inquisitive and eager to learn. We as teachers must offer
support and encouragement. It is important to recognize
the strengths and needs of each child so that they may
reach their fullest potential. The success of any classroom
program, whether it is in a child care or school setting,
relies on good team dynamics and communication to
support the children in their learning.

17. Maureen Saint

Hello everyone, I have been employed at the Centennial College
East York Childcare Centre since 2007 as a Registered Early
Childhood Educator. I have been providing care for children
infancy through school-age, as well as supporting families with
educational and developmental insight. Since 2008, I have been
supporting both RECE and ECA student as a Field Supervisor. I
am honored to walk hand in hand with students as they take steps
towards a great and rewarding career. I am committed to working
with managers and placement supervisors to help meet the needs
of all students in their placement setting. I believe that every
student who enters into the educational field must first recognize
the true reason they choose the field. For me, it was wanting to
make a difference in the lives of children. It was supporting
families with a wide range of childcare needs ranging from
providing exceptional care of the children in the program to
emotional support for families It was a desire born straight from
my heart. I believe that both the teacher and the student can learn
from each other in a respectful manner and that different learning
and teaching styles should be embraced. I believe that
communication is the first step to building a strong relationship
between the teacher and the student. To the student, measure
yourself against the standards which are set out for your
profession. Let the manual be a guide - “When in doubt, please
find out.”
Audrey Henry

I am a Centennial College graduate of the ECE program, class of
1983 and have been working in the field ever since. I have
experience working with all age groups Infant to School-Age.
I have supported students in their field placements from various
colleges for many years . The past 15 years I have been working full
time as a Centre Supervisor with the City of Toronto in various
locations. My experiences in the child care field have given me a
vast source of knowledge and a skill set that I can use in the
supervision of students.
My personal philosophy is I believe that children learn best when
they have the opportunity to be engaged in meaningful exploration
and play based learning. When children are provided a
stimulating, developmentally appropriate curriculum in a warm,
safe environment they have the opportunity to grow in their own
individual and unique way. My role a field placement supervisor is
to ensure the students provide the kinds of experiences that
promote active learning for children. Further to this my role also
includes a commitment to the students to have high standards of
work quality to become successful Early Childhood Educators.
