Luis Miguel Chong Chong is a Mexico-based food industry leader who guides companies such as Disruptiva Works, S.A. de C.V., and has a background in the electricity and agricultural sectors. One next generation company focused on cattle is Connecterra, a Dutch startup that works with dairy producers in monitoring the well-being of herds. With the IDA system, a motion sensor is attached to the collar of each cow which, when combined with other data, generates AI-enabled alerts centered on animal temperature, health, and operational changes.
The IDA platform contains a matrix of data spanning the context and history of each bovine, which allows producers to analytically understand and diagnose health issues as they arise. The end result is that underlying issues that may be a challenge to detect in their earliest stages are quickly brought to the producers’ attention. For example, a case of lameness may be identified two days earlier than a human eye would take to recognize the same issue.
The combination of wearable sensors, cloud-enabled communication, artificial intelligence, and mobile apps appears to be effective. One 12-month study at two farms in Europe found that cows using IDA received quicker diagnosis and treatment, and required only half the antibiotics as those not using the system.
