Film title
First of all the title illustrated as each letters appears randomly with a soft feeling and
moves to the left as it slowly fades out in the screen. For instance, it is portrayed just like
typing in the old fashioned way which just like through a type writer. It challenges the
traditional convention of an opening title sequence because expectedly a title is portrayed
as bold and bright as it can easily catch audience attention. Furthermore, the opening title
conveys the time and era of the film may be based on which makes the audience feel the
suspense through the start of the film. This is important in a movie as it builds up
expectation to the audience mind and creates imagination their head on what could be the
possible scene next. Additionally, the typography of the film title is very small and
simple; that the colour of the font used is white which signifies innocence through the
film but the dark, dull and blunt background overpowered the title which means darker
scene is most likely to be the climax of the film which intrigues audience more further.
Costumes / Props
Two young men is acting very suspicious through the opening scene and by that we can
suspect that the young adults is up to something evil. Additionally, we can analyse the role
of the two young men in the station through their costumes. This is because both young men
are wearing a colour clothing of ‘black’ and stereotypically the colour of black signifies
‘negativity’ which let the audience think on what could possibly the negative vibes may
occur. Furthermore, the use of props in the opening scene such as the ‘guns’ or weapons
represents the power that the character may have. Unfortunately, one of the young men
pointing out a gun to the mum signifies a threatening behaviour; that he’s over powering the
life of the mother by frightening her. This then introduces the audience into the brutal world
of gangster or criminal life and makes them contemplate about the real world; that it gives
them a higher awareness about this situation which gives them knowledge on what to do if
ever they are in this position of life.
Facial Expression/Body
Language
Facial expression and body language is usually used by the character not only as a
conventional skill for the opening sequence but also throughout the entire film which can
illustrate different meanings behind it. Through the opening scene we can see the facial
expression of being ‘worried’ due to the two young men being suspicious around her and her
daughter. From this scene what I can analyze from her body language and expression is that
the mothers perspective was to save her daughter from the danger; the unconditional love is
shown by the mother. This makes the audience appreciate the existence of their love ones
even more further because the scene basically educated them that no one is permanent in this
world; that our life or even someone's life can end in a second. Therefore, it makes
us/audience realized that its important to spend our time to the people who really deserve it.
Camera Shots
Interestingly, through out the opening scenery, they have showed different types of shots
which also connotes different meanings behind it. For instance, simple shots such as
medium, long and close up shot is used to display realism of the genre in the film (drama)
by using a realistic shot it illustrates that it can happen in real life; that can easily help the
audience to feel the reality of life. An arc shot is used to show the fear expression of the
mother and demonstrate the fast pace of mugging which creates a tense atmosphere; that can
interest the audience. Moreover, extreme long shot is used to signifies the defenceless young
girl screaming over her mother who has been shot. The shot then gives an image to the
audience of "distance" that conveys what the girl is feeling know – alone. Series of medium
shot is used to demonstrate the fear of the mother and threaten expression through the film
which signifies danger further can occur.
Sound / Editing
Through the opening scene, fairly little sound is used to signifies suspense for the
audience. Also uses a non- diegetic sound such as the sound of train approaching
which gives information to the audience on the introduction of the place or location
and diegetic sound of people taking in creating more of a realistic feel to the
audience. Furthermore, the edits also used as a technique skill to give different
perspectives or meaning to the audience. For instance, date or caption is used in the
film to show when it is set and let audience compare the society before in today's
and it is written in a small font which doesn't take away audience attention as
much. Fast cuts is also used to pick up the genre of the film- drama.
