Media Evaluation
By Fahad Nazor:
Question 1:
• 1. Who did you work with and how did you
manage the tasks between you? Explain how you
organised your time and schedules. What issues
came up with time management? What
problems did you come up against? How did you
deal with these? What were your strengths and
weaknesses in this area? What would you do
differently next time?
Question 2:
• 2. How did you plan your sequence? What
process did you use?
Question 3:
• 3. What technology did you use to complete the
task, and how did you use it? What did you learn
about using the cameras? Here you can also
refer to the discussions we have had in class
recently about digital cameras.
Question 4:
• 4. What factors did you have to take into
account when planning, shooting and editing?
Question 5:
• 5. How successful was your sequence? Please
identify what worked well, and with hindsight,
what would you improve/do differently?
Question 6:
• 6. What have you learnt from completing the
task? Discuss time management skills, group
work skills, organisational skills and technical
skills of production.
Question 7:
• 7. Post production - What did you learn about
the editing process? How did you make
decisions while editing? How did you plan your
time to complete the editing task? What were
your strengths and weaknesses in this area?
What would you do differently next time?

Editor's Notes

  1. For this task I was assigned by my teacher to work with two other fellow students in my class, Monika and Tyra, to produce an opening video which was a way for us to display our knowledge, skills and understanding of different shots and camera angles. At the beginning we all came together in our first lesson and sorted out different roles and responsibilities before starting the actual filming itself, I was in charge of the camera recording, Tyra was our main actor and prop producer while Monika was our main editor as well as our second actor. However, although we each had set responsibilities each and every one of us contributed effectively in helping each other to make sure every task was done efficiently and as professionally as possible. In terms of timing, at first my group had a few minor problems due to the fact that we were all not free on the date (Wednesday) that was given to us by our teacher to actually do our filming but however this was dealt with pretty quickly as we found that we were all free the following day and were given permission to come after school and get out filming done. However before we had actually finished our overall filming of the video we did have problem that occurred as we were told by our teacher that the standard of our filming was not up to scratch and therefore had make sacrifices to come in at a free period that we all had the following day to re-film and fix this blip and make sure we improved the standard in order to make sure we get the best grade possible. Thankfully the quality of our work improved dramatically and our short video in the end turned out to be a success. We definitely had many strengths in our group as we were all hard working and didn’t let the initial poor quality of our work put us down as it only made us smarter as a group and allowed us to bounce back quickly to very much improve it. We always communicated well in the process of producing the video and when trying to sort out suitable times for us all to come in and film it, we listened to each other well, assigned an early leader which was me to make sure things were organized and ran smoothly and every one had contributed well. However if we were to do this again we would make sure we are much more careful when filming so the quality of our work is of a high standard right from the start so we wouldn’t have to come in another day to improve it like we did.
  2. When planning our sequenceWe created a story board which we all went through shot by shot so when we came to filming the video we knew what we had to do, what shot we had to take and when we had to take it. This worked from us perfectly as the filming of the video ran smoothly, everyone know the storyline, what they had to do and when they had to do it in terms of scripts and shot taking.
  3. The technology we used when completing this task was: A Cannon HD camera for the filming, a battery for the camera, tape for the video instead of SD cards which was much better, tripod to hold up the camera and Adobe premier software for the making and editing of the actual recorded video sequence. We had a lesson with a professional camera technician and I learned how to assemble the camera itself along with hot to put in the tape and battery and also learned how to put the camera onto the tripod and how to take it off safely. This lesson was very much needed because I didn’t know hot to do it at first and assembling a camera takes lot of care and responsibility as they can easily be broken when not done properly and cost a lot of money to repair so the upmost respect and care has to be shown when handling them.
  4. There were many factors we had to take into account as a group when planning, shooting and editing our actual video. When planning: we had to make sure our video sequence ran smoothly and our story board made sense as well as meeting the objective criteria. When shooting: we had to make sure we stuck to our story board throughout, got every single shot as close to perfect as possible so it looked as good and as professional as possible in order for us to get the highest marks possible, we had to consider our spacing in shots, the accuracy of them all, focus, zooming, how clear there were, the timing when panning as well as the space to walk into and also the distance and placements of our shots for example, so the long shots actually looked like professional long shots and the medium close up could be recognised as medium close ups and because of this we had to take a few shorts more than once to improve accuracy all in order to show our skills off through the best standard possible. When editing: we had to carefully put together shots that looked fluent and smooth as possible, our transitions through the shots had to look good and professional but also had to remember it had to be simple and not to over done because it was a short prelim task and not a major video production.
  5. I would say that in the end my groups sequence worked out to be very successful, Our determination and desire to do well as well as our ability to work as a team and produce the correct story board that was advised allowed us to successfully complete the task after a few problems in the process of shooting the video sequence. The sequence itself, when finished, looked very professional, well planned out and hardly had any errors and had a very wide effective range of shots used. Although however we were advised by our teacher to improve the quality of our pan shot which I will take into account for the next time I shoot a video and make sure I improve but apart from that it turned out to be a success.
  6. From completing this particular task I learned that when planning, making and shooting a video sequence, one of the most important factors and quality is time management. The more you are able to manage your time effectively and carefully the more you can do in a shorter space of time and the better the quality of the work you produce will be first time. Furthermore I also must say that I learned how to quickly get on, communicate and work well with people I hadn’t talked to before to create a good piece of work for the benefit of us all. Due to this task I was also able to improve and develop my camera shot taking and video editing skills which will definitely undoubtedly by very useful in future tasks.
  7. Post production – I learned that the process of editing had to be done with great care, responsibility and good time management. Due to the fact that Monika in my group had one free period extra than the rest of our group members, we allocated her as main editor for the start of our sequence. The next time we had media we all had the chance to edit and our video in an hour lesson and this is were I took over, having experience already from the lesson we had with a professional film editor, I was quickly able to pick up from where Monika left and was very good at making sure each shot transition flowed perfectly and smoothly but I must admit I wasn't very useful when it came to adding effects which we wanted to use so I know already I need to work on that, this time thankfully and luckily for me, Tyra our other group member had knowledge of how to do this all ready from her past experiences of doing media editing previously. Next time in a more individual task and because I know editing is a big feature in media studies, I would make sure I know everything about editing all its factors so I do not have to rely on the help of others and so I’m able to edit my own work with confidence and independently.
