- 1. MEDIA EVALUATION Honor Cooke In what ways does your media product use, develop or challenge forms and conventions of real media products?
- 2. CONVENTIONS WE USED Final girl – we planned for Molly’s character to be the final girl and last to become victim to the killer. She tells the story at the beginning and is later developed to become the protagonist of our story (unseen). The promiscuous girl character is the first to be killed, which follows the conventions of typical horror films.
- 3. CONVENTIONS WE USED Isolated location – we filmed in a woods in low light conditions to follow the convention of isolated locations. We built on this convention by associating a horror story (molly’s character says at the beginning) with the location to build tension and create an atmosphere around the location
- 4. CONVENTIONS WE USED Dark colours and symbolism of red within our product – we used editing software to make the footage darker than it originally was to create an atmosphere and make the location seem scarier than it may have done otherwise. We also used red in the costume for our promiscuous girl character who is the only character to be killed on screen as this connotes both blood, and gore, which foreshadows her death, and her promiscuous nature, as red is often seen as a colour of love and passion.
- 5. CONVENTIONS WE DEVELOPED We developed the convention of the promiscuous girl character being paired with the jock or ‘funny guy’ by initially having her stand next to him, almost protectively, and then having her move to Jake before the end of the opening, and being killed seemingly because of her unfaithfulness to the jock character.
- 6. CONVENTIONS WE DEVELOPED We developed the oft seen convention of teenagers from dif ferent social groups working together as each of our characters may not be stereotypically seen to hang around with each other but work together in this context when one of their group goes missing. They are seen to split up but for understandable reasons.
