- 1. Evaluation 1: In what ways does your media product use, develop or challenge forms and conventions of real media products?
- 2. Sherlock Holmes (2009) We based a lot of our action sequences on the fight scene in Sherlock Holmes. For example, the slow-motion fighting in the movie inspired us to use this in our thriller whenever the actors made physical contact. Here are a couple screen-grabs of the fight scene in Sherlock Holmes, compared to our own shots. We tried to keep our shots close, seeing as we didn’t have an audience or a background, however you can see in the last shot that we weren’t entirely successful. We also realized that closer shots were more interesting for the viewers, than wide shots.
- 3. Black Swan (2010) • The image of the ballerina below is from the opening title sequence, ‘Black Swan’, which has quite a stylized aspect to it. This is what inspired us with having our sequence filmed in the dark with a spotlight on the actors. Both of these title sequences were filmed in a studio, meaning all the attention is focused on the action happening. • It also creates a slightly ominous and intense atmosphere as the audience can’t see what is surround the actors, which was our intention. • Both of these title sequences are quite ambiguous, as it’s the first thing the viewers see when watching the movie, creating tension and confusion.
- 4. Other Films Initially, we intended on having our thriller set in an alleyway where there would be things in the background, such as cars and trash cans. However, after watching the fight scenes in the film ‘Brick Mansion’, we decided to change the idea to the ‘Black Swan’ theme. On the left is an image of a fight scene in ‘Brick Mansion’. Additionally, we decided to go against the conventions of a typical street fight, such as the one in ‘22 Jump Street’, as it would be too chaotic for an opening title sequence. On the right is an image from the fight scene in ‘22 Jump Street’.
