Research stage-
In this I used the software Microsoft word, PowerPoint, Publisher. Photoshop, Gmail, ‘SlideShare’ and ‘surveymonkey.com’ to
produce a range of documents from a preliminary task to audience research. I was already familiar with all the mentioned
documents aside from surveymonkey.com, SlideShare, Blogger and Photoshop. As the majority of software that I was using at
this stage was very familiar to me there was very little I had learnt. Although one of the things I did learn was how to transform
a publisher document (Preliminary contents page) into a JPEG file (Photograph) so that it could be uploaded onto SlideShare.
This is done by (once completing document in publisher) selecting “Change File Type” under the heading “File Types.”,
Clicking an image file format from the list displayed under the heading “Image File Types.” The format being JPEG. On the
other hand, at this stage I began learning a little about the software that I was unfamiliar with such as Blogger. Blogger allows
me to upload my coursework onto my very own blog, and so I learnt that if I wanted to make a post on my blog I’d have to
embed a link from SlideShare via HTML in blogger and then click compose to reveal my document as a blog post on screen.
Then click, save and post. The hyperlink of my blog’s name on the right hand side allowed me to view my blog as it would be
to a reader whenever I wanted.
Planning stage
At this stage I began to fully immerse myself into the technology and thus I began to learn even more. I began to use even more new programmes such
as adobe premier pro, YouTube, and Edexcel. As well as I began to use more hardware. In the research stage I was just using the computer and the
camera once to take one portrait picture for my preliminary front cover. In the ‘Interviews’ section of the planning I learnt how to use the camera
efficiently for example, I learnt that a Tripod can be used to steady a camera so that when the clients were giving their responses, I had a ‘non-shaky’
frame in focus which allowed me to have my handsfree to read the questions to the interviewee. Even more so I learnt that the camera can take awhile
to focus. Although there is the option of autofocus, it still can take quite a significant amount of time for the camera to adjust to light and settings.
Adobe premier pro is a piece of software that allows me to edit moving images, although I’d used it in a previous project (poorly) it was still completely
new to me. I learnt a few things however it was sill at a very basic level, I managed to incorporate title screens by going to File>New>Title>Title type.
This allowed me to add text to a frame with the moving image in the background. Even more so I learnt that to cut some film you have to click a track
header to target the track that contains the clip you want to trim, then the play head has to be dragged to the location in the sequence to which you
want to extend the clip in point or Out point. After that the rolling edit tool has to be clicked and then an edit point selected.
Once the video was edited I then used my Gmail account to upload the video onto YouTube where it can be viewed publicly, YouTube was fairly
straight forward to use as whatever you wanted to do within the site. However I did not know that other users/viewers can comment on the video once
it had been uploaded to the site if I clicked ‘allow comments’ when I was uploading the video. Microsoft Excel is a programme that allows spreadsheets
to be formed, I then made a flat plan as to the content for every single page of my magazine. I learnt that to combine text from two or more cells into
one cell then you must click the cell that contains the first text you wish to combine e.g. PG then type &” “& (a space enclosed in quotation marks)
then click the next cell of the text that you wish to combine.
:what have you learnt about technologies from the
process of constructing this product?
:what have you learnt about technologies from the
process of constructing this product?
Production stage
Out of all three stages this one was the most challenging for me as it had the most technological aspects, all the listed pieces of technology were being
used. Especially the 600D camera, 100s of shots were taken over the course of my different shoots therefore I quickly learnt how to hold the camera
properly with one hand at the top of the camera when shooting in portrait. As mentioned earlier the camera would take awhile to focus, therefore I had
to learn to take practice shots to test the camera’s focus. Linked to this I learnt that the dial on the focus setting allows me to switch from different
focal points within the shot. This worked well for my product as it allowed me to manipulate where the audience will first look to in a photograph. The
different focal points would flash red whenever selected on screen so that I knew fully where the focus was going to be. Transferring the photos proved
to be tricky as an SD card reader was needed to upload the image from the camera to the computer as all the images are stored there. This works Just
like a memory stick in the fact that it is just plugged into the computer and the computer reads the card.
The website dafont.com allowed me to download fonts by copying the link, then using the software run to install the fonts into my computer and
Goconqr.com allowed me to create a mind map to be used in my evaluation. Photoshop had its prime tie at this stage in my research, it allowed me to
manipulate images such as adding text, adjusting the brightness/contrast and place an image. Not although at its prime the effects were not used
heavily as the images themselves were of a high quality. But a few things I’ve learnt in Photoshop include how to place an image so that it could act as
a page in a magazine for example which is done by going to File > Place > Choose your image from your file Press return (enter) to place the image (the
transform box will then disappear)To make the box appear again to resize the image, press CTRL and T together on your keyboard. ALWAYS hold down
the shift key (arrow up) whilst resizing, this keeps the pixels resolution and your image wont become blurry. As well as (even though it was not used I
my final product) how to add an effect layer to an image to make it blend into the genre of a magazine, for example the sequins in my double page
spread were originally going to be used as an effect layer however once it was applied it did not give the subtle glamorised look I was hoping for. To add
an effect you visit Place > Transform (resize) > Magic Wand. Then click on the area you don’t want and press delete. If you want to select the opposite
area, right click your mouse and click > Select Inverse. Then Press Delete.

  • 3. Research stage- In this I used the software Microsoft word, PowerPoint, Publisher. Photoshop, Gmail, ‘SlideShare’ and ‘surveymonkey.com’ to produce a range of documents from a preliminary task to audience research. I was already familiar with all the mentioned documents aside from surveymonkey.com, SlideShare, Blogger and Photoshop. As the majority of software that I was using at this stage was very familiar to me there was very little I had learnt. Although one of the things I did learn was how to transform a publisher document (Preliminary contents page) into a JPEG file (Photograph) so that it could be uploaded onto SlideShare. This is done by (once completing document in publisher) selecting “Change File Type” under the heading “File Types.”, Clicking an image file format from the list displayed under the heading “Image File Types.” The format being JPEG. On the other hand, at this stage I began learning a little about the software that I was unfamiliar with such as Blogger. Blogger allows me to upload my coursework onto my very own blog, and so I learnt that if I wanted to make a post on my blog I’d have to embed a link from SlideShare via HTML in blogger and then click compose to reveal my document as a blog post on screen. Then click, save and post. The hyperlink of my blog’s name on the right hand side allowed me to view my blog as it would be to a reader whenever I wanted.

  • 5. Planning stage At this stage I began to fully immerse myself into the technology and thus I began to learn even more. I began to use even more new programmes such as adobe premier pro, YouTube, and Edexcel. As well as I began to use more hardware. In the research stage I was just using the computer and the camera once to take one portrait picture for my preliminary front cover. In the ‘Interviews’ section of the planning I learnt how to use the camera efficiently for example, I learnt that a Tripod can be used to steady a camera so that when the clients were giving their responses, I had a ‘non-shaky’ frame in focus which allowed me to have my handsfree to read the questions to the interviewee. Even more so I learnt that the camera can take awhile to focus. Although there is the option of autofocus, it still can take quite a significant amount of time for the camera to adjust to light and settings. Adobe premier pro is a piece of software that allows me to edit moving images, although I’d used it in a previous project (poorly) it was still completely new to me. I learnt a few things however it was sill at a very basic level, I managed to incorporate title screens by going to File>New>Title>Title type. This allowed me to add text to a frame with the moving image in the background. Even more so I learnt that to cut some film you have to click a track header to target the track that contains the clip you want to trim, then the play head has to be dragged to the location in the sequence to which you want to extend the clip in point or Out point. After that the rolling edit tool has to be clicked and then an edit point selected. Once the video was edited I then used my Gmail account to upload the video onto YouTube where it can be viewed publicly, YouTube was fairly straight forward to use as whatever you wanted to do within the site. However I did not know that other users/viewers can comment on the video once it had been uploaded to the site if I clicked ‘allow comments’ when I was uploading the video. Microsoft Excel is a programme that allows spreadsheets to be formed, I then made a flat plan as to the content for every single page of my magazine. I learnt that to combine text from two or more cells into one cell then you must click the cell that contains the first text you wish to combine e.g. PG then type &” “& (a space enclosed in quotation marks) then click the next cell of the text that you wish to combine. :what have you learnt about technologies from the process of constructing this product?

  • 7. Production stage Out of all three stages this one was the most challenging for me as it had the most technological aspects, all the listed pieces of technology were being used. Especially the 600D camera, 100s of shots were taken over the course of my different shoots therefore I quickly learnt how to hold the camera properly with one hand at the top of the camera when shooting in portrait. As mentioned earlier the camera would take awhile to focus, therefore I had to learn to take practice shots to test the camera’s focus. Linked to this I learnt that the dial on the focus setting allows me to switch from different focal points within the shot. This worked well for my product as it allowed me to manipulate where the audience will first look to in a photograph. The different focal points would flash red whenever selected on screen so that I knew fully where the focus was going to be. Transferring the photos proved to be tricky as an SD card reader was needed to upload the image from the camera to the computer as all the images are stored there. This works Just like a memory stick in the fact that it is just plugged into the computer and the computer reads the card. The website dafont.com allowed me to download fonts by copying the link, then using the software run to install the fonts into my computer and Goconqr.com allowed me to create a mind map to be used in my evaluation. Photoshop had its prime tie at this stage in my research, it allowed me to manipulate images such as adding text, adjusting the brightness/contrast and place an image. Not although at its prime the effects were not used heavily as the images themselves were of a high quality. But a few things I’ve learnt in Photoshop include how to place an image so that it could act as a page in a magazine for example which is done by going to File > Place > Choose your image from your file Press return (enter) to place the image (the transform box will then disappear)To make the box appear again to resize the image, press CTRL and T together on your keyboard. ALWAYS hold down the shift key (arrow up) whilst resizing, this keeps the pixels resolution and your image wont become blurry. As well as (even though it was not used I my final product) how to add an effect layer to an image to make it blend into the genre of a magazine, for example the sequins in my double page spread were originally going to be used as an effect layer however once it was applied it did not give the subtle glamorised look I was hoping for. To add an effect you visit Place > Transform (resize) > Magic Wand. Then click on the area you don’t want and press delete. If you want to select the opposite area, right click your mouse and click > Select Inverse. Then Press Delete.
