This media advocacy module scenario involves a recent tragic shooting by a young person with a history of mental health issues. Participants will role play as psychiatrists interviewed by journalists about the event. They will practice responding to questions in small groups, with facilitators playing journalists. Key goals are to convey 1-2 clear advocacy themes, cite evidence if available, and provide appropriate caveats while looking for advocacy opportunities. Facilitators will give feedback on presentation skills and adherence to communication best practices.

1. Multicultural Profile
Conduct a face-to-face (this can be done virtually or by phone during quarantine) interview with
someone who is from one of the following groups to which you do NOT belong:
African American
Latino/Hispanic
Native American/American Indian
Asian American
Arab American
Muslim
Gay/Lesbian/Bisexual/Transgender
People with physical disabilities
Your interview must explore your interviewee’s experiences with the media (TV, radio, movies,
music, magazines, books, comic books, video games, and advertisements, which although not a mass
medium, is relevant to our class) and the media’s portrayals or representations of his/her cultural
group. The focus of your interview should be this person’s beliefs and feelings about how the
media treat members of his or her multicultural group. How have the media impacted her/his life?
How have the media helped to define who s/he is? Specific examples are needed.
Some of the questions you may want to ask include:
● How do you prefer to be addressed as a member of your group?
● Where did you grow up?
● How did you feel growing up as a member of your cultural group?
● Have you ever experienced insensitivity, prejudice, or discrimination because of your
race/ethnic background/religion/sexual orientation/age/disability? Please explain.
● How do you think the media have portrayed/represented people from your group? Are the
portrayals positive or negative? (You may consider asking about various types of media and
whether s/he has noticed a difference between portrayals in news media and entertainment
media.) Ask for specific examples -- the more the better (titles of movies and perhaps
character name if relevant; TV shows and characters; songs; names of video games; CNN,
FOX, or other news source; etc.).
● What messages about your cultural group have you gotten from the media? Ask for specific
examples. Again: are there different messages being presented in different media? Are
mediated messages different in news media than they are in entertainment media? Specific
examples will be helpful.
● What role have the media played in helping you to define yourself (as a member of your

psychology and the criminal justice system. The biopsychosocial factors that may influence criminal

· If a publication receives multiple letters on the same subject, the editor will choose one that says something in a new way or takes a unique angle.
· Focus your letter on one point on one subject. If you are commenting on a specific story in the paper, mention the headline and date. Cite the specific reference and sum it up in a sentence to refresh readers’ memories. Then point out facts that were left out, or refute or support facts that were stated.
· Be clear and concise. Shorter is better. Most papers want letters of 250 words or less. Magazines such as Time want even less.
· State your point early in the letter and support your point with facts.
· Know the audience of the publication. Technical information and long, multi-syllable words are often inappropriate for a general audience.
· If appropriate, mention your motivation or expertise in writing. For example, “As an Ohio State University student, I believe… and therefore x,” or “I am a director of a non-profit agency that serves families in poverty. Here is what my experience has been….That is why I believe y.”
General Logistical Tips:

Module Overview
In Module 1, we considered the role of culture in influencing how people think, feel, act, and believe. Together, these constitute a “worldview” which can vary drastically from culture to culture. Yet leaders are called upon to solve problems and address challenges that span cultural boundaries, and they need to harness the resources of peoples who may view the problems very differently from each other. How to navigate these differences and discover a structure of culture that can help leaders come to mutual understanding is the topic of this module.
Drawing on the work of Geert Hofstede and others (2010), we distinguish between personality (individual characteristics that make one person uniquely different from another), human nature (shared characteristics that are common to all members of the species), and culture (learned behaviors that are shared by members of a group or category). The frameworks that are the primary focus of this module concern values, attitudes, and beliefs at the cultural level. That is, we recognize that individuals will differ, but they will also share a system of overarching learned behaviors that are common to all members of that society.
The dimensions of culture that are discussed … represent the ways that groups of people within a culture interpret and manage the universal questions faced by all societies as members of the human race. These questions involve such topics as what is the nature of power and authority? What is the responsibility of the individual to the group? Is short term gain more important than long term stability? How do we manage the unexpected and unpredictable? While there may be individual differences in the responses to these questions, there are also larger, broader, shared patterns of response that are shaped by the norms and values of a given society. These are referred to a “cultural dimensions,” and knowledge of these broad patterns can help leaders to anticipate, interpret, and react to practices that may at first seem very odd and illogical. When viewed through the lens of cultural dimensions, strange customs and practices can make perfect sense and can lead to greater cultural intelligence (and effectiveness) on the part of the leader.

· Be clear and concise. Shorter is better. Most papers want letters of 250 words or less. Magazines such as Time want even less.

Module Overview
In Module 1, we considered the role of culture in influencing how people think, feel, act, and believe. Together, these constitute a “worldview” which can vary drastically from culture to culture. Yet leaders are called upon to solve problems and address challenges that span cultural boundaries, and they need to harness the resources of peoples who may view the problems very differently from each other. How to navigate these differences and discover a structure of culture that can help leaders come to mutual understanding is the topic of this module.
Drawing on the work of Geert Hofstede and others (2010), we distinguish between personality (individual characteristics that make one person uniquely different from another), human nature (shared characteristics that are common to all members of the species), and culture (learned behaviors that are shared by members of a group or category). The frameworks that are the primary focus of this module concern values, attitudes, and beliefs at the cultural level. That is, we recognize that individuals will differ, but they will also share a system of overarching learned behaviors that are common to all members of that society.
The dimensions of culture that are discussed … represent the ways that groups of people within a culture interpret and manage the universal questions faced by all societies as members of the human race. These questions involve such topics as what is the nature of power and authority? What is the responsibility of the individual to the group? Is short term gain more important than long term stability? How do we manage the unexpected and unpredictable? While there may be individual differences in the responses to these questions, there are also larger, broader, shared patterns of response that are shaped by the norms and values of a given society. These are referred to a “cultural dimensions,” and knowledge of these broad patterns can help leaders to anticipate, interpret, and react to practices that may at first seem very odd and illogical. When viewed through the lens of cultural dimensions, strange customs and practices can make perfect sense and can lead to greater cultural intelligence (and effectiveness) on the part of the leader.

Ethanol (CH3CH2OH), or beverage alcohol, is a two-carbon alcohol
that is rapidly distributed in the body and brain. Ethanol alters many
neurochemical systems and has rewarding and addictive properties. It
is the oldest recreational drug and likely contributes to more morbidity,
mortality, and public health costs than all illicit drugs combined. The
5th edition of the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders
(DSM-5) integrates alcohol abuse and alcohol dependence into a single
disorder called alcohol use disorder (AUD), with mild, moderate,
and severe subclassifications (American Psychiatric Association, 2013).
In the DSM-5, all types of substance abuse and dependence have been
combined into a single substance use disorder (SUD) on a continuum
from mild to severe. A diagnosis of AUD requires that at least two of
the 11 DSM-5 behaviors be present within a 12-month period (mild
AUD: 2–3 criteria; moderate AUD: 4–5 criteria; severe AUD: 6–11 criteria).
The four main behavioral effects of AUD are impaired control over
drinking, negative social consequences, risky use, and altered physiological
effects (tolerance, withdrawal). This chapter presents an overview
of the prevalence and harmful consequences of AUD in the U.S.,
the systemic nature of the disease, neurocircuitry and stages of AUD,
comorbidities, fetal alcohol spectrum disorders, genetic risk factors, and
pharmacotherapies for AUD.

RESULTS: Overall life span (LS) was 2252.1±1742.5 days and cumulative 5-year survival (5YS) reached 73.2%, 10 years – 64.8%, 20 years – 42.5%. 513 LCP lived more than 5 years (LS=3124.6±1525.6 days), 148 LCP – more than 10 years (LS=5054.4±1504.1 days).199 LCP died because of LC (LS=562.7±374.5 days). 5YS of LCP after bi/lobectomies was significantly superior in comparison with LCP after pneumonectomies (78.1% vs.63.7%, P=0.00001 by log-rank test). AT significantly improved 5YS (66.3% vs. 34.8%) (P=0.00000 by log-rank test) only for LCP with N1-2. Cox modeling displayed that 5YS of LCP significantly depended on: phase transition (PT) early-invasive LC in terms of synergetics, PT N0—N12, cell ratio factors (ratio between cancer cells- CC and blood cells subpopulations), G1-3, histology, glucose, AT, blood cell circuit, prothrombin index, heparin tolerance, recalcification time (P=0.000-0.038). Neural networks, genetic algorithm selection and bootstrap simulation revealed relationships between 5YS and PT early-invasive LC (rank=1), PT N0—N12 (rank=2), thrombocytes/CC (3), erythrocytes/CC (4), eosinophils/CC (5), healthy cells/CC (6), lymphocytes/CC (7), segmented neutrophils/CC (8), stick neutrophils/CC (9), monocytes/CC (10); leucocytes/CC (11). Correct prediction of 5YS was 100% by neural networks computing (area under ROC curve=1.0; error=0.0).
CONCLUSIONS: 5YS of LCP after radical procedures significantly depended on: 1) PT early-invasive cancer; 2) PT N0--N12; 3) cell ratio factors; 4) blood cell circuit; 5) biochemical factors; 6) hemostasis system; 7) AT; 8) LC characteristics; 9) LC cell dynamics; 10) surgery type: lobectomy/pneumonectomy; 11) anthropometric data. Optimal diagnosis and treatment strategies for LC are: 1) screening and early detection of LC; 2) availability of experienced thoracic surgeons because of complexity of radical procedures; 3) aggressive en block surgery and adequate lymph node dissection for completeness; 4) precise prediction; 5) adjuvant chemoimmunoradiotherapy for LCP with unfavorable prognosis.

Media Advocacy Interactive Module - Crisis
- 1. Media Advocacy Interactive Module Target Length: 30 minutes Participants: Psychiatry Residents and Fellows Facilitators: Media Relations staff, attendings Scenario: You are a psychiatrist in a rural area. Within the last 3-4 days, a terrible tragedy has occurred – a young person was observed to have shot and killed 10 others. At this point in time, his potential motives are unclear, although it appears that he has been disorganized and paranoid in his thoughts and behaviors for the last several years. There is widespread suspicion that he has underlying mental health issues. As you prepare to start your busy clinic day, you receive a call by a journalist for the local paper, asking for a comment on the tragedy. Questions to consider: What type of story will this be? (News, feature, editorial column) Will I be quoted? Is this on/off record (assume on the record if not explicitly stated otherwise) What is your deadline? I have some clinical responsibilities at this time. Could I call you back later in the day to discuss this? What do you want to do now? Familiarize yourself with the topic/situation in question? Contact colleagues? Locate some relevant statistics? Assess what kind of “angle” the journalist/newspaper/media organization may be taking on the story and compare with your experience/advocacy stance? Remember to: Develop 1-2 key themes/thoughts that you want to convey. State these clearly multiple times throughout the interview. Cite evidence, if you have any. Give appropriate caveats. Look for advocacy angles. Directions: Have audience split up into groups of 2-3 members. The groups will be given 5-10 minutes to practice their interview. Each group will then present to a facilitator. Facilitator should play the role of a journalist. Assume the journalist is coming from an “angle” that the person in question should have been evaluated earlier and somehow “slipped through the cracks.” Questions can and should be asked, but not in an antagonistic way. Facilitators should assess for key components listed above, as well as body
- 2. language, presentation style. They should then give brief feedback after the presentation. The last ~5 minutes at the end of the session should be used to solicit residents’ experience, evaluate challenges and/or surprises.
