Mechanical seals are used to control leakage of liquids in centrifugal pumps. They perform better than traditional packing methods. All mechanical seals leak slightly to lubricate the faces, but the leakage is minimal. There are different types including shaft mounted, cartridge, pusher and non-pusher seals. Pusher seals have a dynamic O-ring that moves as the faces wear, while non-pusher seals compensate without moving sealing points. Mechanical seals allow much better control of leakage than traditional packing methods.
