Live cells respond to the changes of their physiological environment as well as to the mechanical stimuli occurring in and out of the cell body. It is known that cell directional motion is influenced by the substrate stiffness. A finite element modelling based on the tensegrity approach is used here to describe the biomechanical behavior of cells. The effects of substrate stiffness and prestress on strain energy of a cell are investigated by defining several substrate stiffness values and prestress values. Numerical simulations reveal that the internal elastic strain energy of the cell decreases as the substrate stiffness increases. As prestress of cell increases, the strain energy increases as well. The change of prestress value does not change behavior pattern of the strain energy: strain energy of a cell will decrease when substrate stiffness increases. These findings indicate that both cell prestress and substrate stiffness influence the cell directional movement.

Lens as an Osmotic Pump, a Bidomain Model. DOI: 10.13140/RG.2.2.25046.80966Bob Eisenberg
The lens of the eye has no blood vessels to interfere with vision. The lens is far too large for diffusion to provide food and clear wastes.
Experimental, theoretical and computational work has shown that the lens supports its own microcirculation. It is an osmotic pump that implements what physiologists have long believed “Convection provides what diffusion cannot.”
We introduce a general (non-electro-neutral) model that describes the steady-state relationships among ion fluxes, water flow and electric field inside cells, and in the narrow extracellular spaces within the lens.
Using asymptotic analysis, we derive a simplified model exploiting the numerical values of physiological parameters. The model reduces to first generation ‘circuit’ models and shows the basis of computer simulations too large to easily understand. The full model helps resolve paradoxes that have perplexed molecular biologists: crucial physiological properties do not depend as expected on the permeability of the lens interior (to water flow).
Role of αc–relaxation in high-temperature polymer deformation.
Proceedings of the American Society for Composites 2009-Twenty-Fourth Technical ConferenceWith the Canadian Association for Composite Structures and Materials (Joint Canadian-American International Conference), September 15-17, Newark, DE
The cellular cytoskeleton is essential in proper cell function as well as in organism development. These polymers provide the elaborate roads along which most intracellular protein transport occurs. I will discuss several examples where mathematical modeling, analysis, and simulation tools help us study and understand the interactions between these filaments roads and motor proteins in cells. In neurons, neurofilaments navigate axons and their constrictions to maintain a healthy speed of neuronal communication. We develop stochastic models that may provide insights into transport mechanisms through axonal constrictions. In the reproductive system of the worm C. elegans, we use agent - based modeling to study how myosin motors interact with actin filaments to maintain contractile rings that allow passage and nutrient transport for developing egg cells. In addition, we have recently become interested in using topological data analysis tools to assess maintenance and establishment of these ring structures.

Finite Element Simulation of Microfluidic Biochip for High Throughput Hydrody...TELKOMNIKA JOURNAL
In this paper, a microfluidic device capable of trapping a single cell in a high throughput manner
and at high trapping efficiency is designed simply through a concept of hydrodynamic manipulation. The
microfluidic device is designed with a series of trap and bypass microchannel structures for trapping
individual cells without the need for microwell, robotic equipment, external electric force or surface
modification. In order to investigate the single cell trapping efficiency, a finite element model of the
proposed design has been developed using ABAQUS-FEA software. Based on the simulation, the
geometrical parameters and fluid velocity which affect the single cell trapping are extensively optimized.
After optimization of the trap and bypass microchannel structures via simulations, a single cell can be
trapped at a desired location efficiently.

Elevating Tactical DDD Patterns Through Object CalisthenicsDorra BARTAGUIZ
After immersing yourself in the blue book and its red counterpart, attending DDD-focused conferences, and applying tactical patterns, you're left with a crucial question: How do I ensure my design is effective? Tactical patterns within Domain-Driven Design (DDD) serve as guiding principles for creating clear and manageable domain models. However, achieving success with these patterns requires additional guidance. Interestingly, we've observed that a set of constraints initially designed for training purposes remarkably aligns with effective pattern implementation, offering a more ‘mechanical’ approach. Let's explore together how Object Calisthenics can elevate the design of your tactical DDD patterns, offering concrete help for those venturing into DDD for the first time!
