12-2-Publication-Experimental Analysis of Explosive Forming
This study numerically simulates and experimentally tests the explosive hydroforming process used to form torispherical heads made of aluminum alloy AA5083. Finite element models using LS-DYNA software were developed to simulate the process, applying the Johnson-Cook and Modified Zerilli-Armstrong constitutive models. The models were verified against experimental tests. The simulation captured most material behaviors under different stress states but did not fully describe the transient zone between tension and compression. The predicted width of the transient rim was smaller than seen experimentally. Overall the blast loading simulation showed good agreement with Cole's relation for underwater detonation of small charges, with 95% accuracy.
Discrete element modeling of micro feature hot compaction process

Carbon nanotubes were found to inhibit crack formation and growth by nucleating many nano-scale damage zones. Energy absorption also increased through nanotube pullout and fracture. An energy-based model was proposed to explain the fatigue life improvement from additional strain energy absorption in the composite.

1) 2512 chip resistors mounted to a printed circuit board using solder joints were subjected to over 50,000 short duration (<10 min) power cycles. 2) Failure analysis found cracking in the solder joints due to low cycle fatigue. 3) Temperature data showed the resistors experienced temperature swings of up to 22°C with each power cycle, driving the low cycle fatigue of the solder joints.

Me 1999-mar4 - predicting durability
Thermomechanical simulation was used to optimize a catalytic converter assembly for durability. The simulation modeled the intumescent mat material that holds the substrate in place within the metal can. It found that the mat expands significantly at high temperatures, applying pressure to the substrate. The instantaneous pressures during assembly were highest and most critical for substrate failure. The simulation analyzed the assembly through one full thermal cycle and found stresses and strains increased in the can and substrate during heating due to mat expansion. Peak mat pressures and substrate stresses doubled from assembly to high temperature operation.

Thermal and mechanical stress modelling of smart power switches under active ...
Smart power switches (SPS) for industrial and automotive applications have to withstand substantial power dissipation during operation. They are expected to work even under extreme temperature and electrical stresses, such as transient start up or overload. Several thousands of cyclic loading of electric pulses might cause failure to this SPS device. The reason behind this failure is that the electrical pulses induce thermal stress, which in turn leads to mechanical stress. Due to the multi-material design of SPS, the thermal stress often induces tractions at the material interfaces. These tractions might initiate cracks and delamination, which can lead to a device failure due to loss of electrical contact. If a crack is not nucleated, the device may fail due to overheating. Therefore, thermal and mechanical stress plays a crucial role to determine the device failure and thereby the lifetime modelling of the device. Finite Element simulation is used to analyse heat transfer and mechanical problems in SPS.
ANSYS is the FEM simulation tool which is used to perform the electrical, thermal and mechanical simulations. Electro-Thermal simulation is initially carried out in a 3D model of the SPS for various electrical pulses and as a result, the thermal stress in the model is analysed. Thermo-Mechanical chip simulation is performed with the thermal stress as loading conditions and the mechanical stress across the model is analysed. Microscopic stress simulation of the SPS sub- model is performed to analyse the stress in power metal. The electrical, thermal and the mechanical problem are solved using the FEM method in ANSYS.

This document describes a molecular dynamics study of carbon nanotube sheet scrolled fiber composites to investigate their effects on mechanical properties like compressive strength and interfacial shear strength. The study found that composites with carbon nanotube sheets wrapped around fibers at angles of 0 and 90 degrees relative to the fiber direction showed around 25% and 22% higher compressive strength, respectively, than the baseline epoxy/carbon fiber interface without nanotubes. This improvement is due to the nanotubes enhancing the load transfer between the fiber and matrix and preventing micro-buckling under compression. Future work will model the system over a range of strain rates and integrate nano, micro, and macro scale models.
Composite domes under low velocity impact loading
Under repeated impact composite domes subjected 6 J energy, changes locally with
increasing drop height. The action of the dynamic load generates reactions at the
support and bending moments at points on the surface of the composite. The peak loads
were noted to increase and stabilise about some mean value; and the 150mm diameter
shell was more damage tolerant compared to the 200 mm diameter one.
Experimental composite dome under low velocity impact load

The research in this paper is an essential part of a bigger effort to develop ultrasonic welding using flat energy directors (FED) in thermoplastic composites. It mainly focused on assessing the effect of the changes in thickness and viscosity of FED on welding strength and welding strength stability. Furthermore, the welding and failure mechanisms were investigated by monitoring the real-time temperature evolution at the interface and analyzing the welding area (WA) and the macro and
microfracture surface. From the experimental results, the use of FED with thinner thickness (0.1-0.2 mm) and slightly higher viscosity greatly improved weld strength and weld strength stability. Due to the effect of glass fibers forming a mechanical interlocking effect between the adherend and FED, joints with 20% SGF/PP FED also had a surprisingly excellent weld quality. Welding area analysis indicated a significantly positive correlation between the lap shear strengthⅠand the welded area for the joints with FED. Based on real-time temperature curves, thinner FED had an improvement on the initial temperature
rate and the most temperature curves leveled off at the onset melting temperature (Tonset) of the FED after a time-lapse of about 0.4 s. Morphology analysis showed that the melting and flow of matrix at the interface started at the edges of the overlap; the melting area and morphology of the interfaces with 1% EG/PP FED and 20% SGF/PP are much bigger and coarse. And failure mechanisms of the joints with FED are a combination of adhesive failure, cohesive failure, and fiber-matrix debonding failure.

These tractions might initiate cracks and delamination, which can lead to a device failure due to loss of electrical contact. If a crack is not nucleated, the device may fail due to overheating. Therefore, thermal and mechanical stress plays a crucial role to determine the device failure and thereby the lifetime modelling of the device. Finite Element simulation is used to analyse heat transfer and mechanical problems in SPS.
ANSYS is the FEM simulation tool which is used to perform the electrical, thermal and mechanical simulations. Electro-Thermal simulation is initially carried out in a 3D model of the SPS for various electrical pulses and as a result, the thermal stress in the model is analysed. Thermo-Mechanical chip simulation is performed with the thermal stress as loading conditions and the mechanical stress across the model is analysed. Microscopic stress simulation of the SPS sub- model is performed to analyse the stress in power metal. The electrical, thermal and the mechanical problem are solved using the FEM method in ANSYS.

This document describes a molecular dynamics study of carbon nanotube sheet scrolled fiber composites to investigate their effects on mechanical properties like compressive strength and interfacial shear strength. The study found that composites with carbon nanotube sheets wrapped around fibers at angles of 0 and 90 degrees relative to the fiber direction showed around 25% and 22% higher compressive strength, respectively, than the baseline epoxy/carbon fiber interface without nanotubes. This improvement is due to the nanotubes enhancing the load transfer between the fiber and matrix and preventing micro-buckling under compression. Future work will model the system over a range of strain rates and integrate nano, micro, and macro scale models.
Composite domes under low velocity impact loading
Under repeated impact composite domes subjected 6 J energy, changes locally with
increasing drop height. The action of the dynamic load generates reactions at the
support and bending moments at points on the surface of the composite. The peak loads
were noted to increase and stabilise about some mean value; and the 150mm diameter
shell was more damage tolerant compared to the 200 mm diameter one.
Experimental composite dome under low velocity impact load

The research in this paper is an essential part of a bigger effort to develop ultrasonic welding using flat energy directors (FED) in thermoplastic composites. It mainly focused on assessing the effect of the changes in thickness and viscosity of FED on welding strength and welding strength stability. Furthermore, the welding and failure mechanisms were investigated by monitoring the real-time temperature evolution at the interface and analyzing the welding area (WA) and the macro and
microfracture surface. From the experimental results, the use of FED with thinner thickness (0.1-0.2 mm) and slightly higher viscosity greatly improved weld strength and weld strength stability. Due to the effect of glass fibers forming a mechanical interlocking effect between the adherend and FED, joints with 20% SGF/PP FED also had a surprisingly excellent weld quality. Welding area analysis indicated a significantly positive correlation between the lap shear strengthⅠand the welded area for the joints with FED. Based on real-time temperature curves, thinner FED had an improvement on the initial temperature
rate and the most temperature curves leveled off at the onset melting temperature (Tonset) of the FED after a time-lapse of about 0.4 s. Morphology analysis showed that the melting and flow of matrix at the interface started at the edges of the overlap; the melting area and morphology of the interfaces with 1% EG/PP FED and 20% SGF/PP are much bigger and coarse. And failure mechanisms of the joints with FED are a combination of adhesive failure, cohesive failure, and fiber-matrix debonding failure.
