VerticalMovements
This project is based in Marfa, Texas and the objective was to design a space to display Donald Judd’s unfinished works. The
two driving forces behind this intervention are light and views. Both of the forces are created through the use of the apertures. These
simple vertical apertures are the main focus of the building. The apertures run vertical along the intervention creating a wrapping
effect that allows a complete view from earth to sky. The vertical apertures created a view that is different from the basic horizontal
views seen on the site. The site is a desert landscape surrounded by mountains and is next to Judd’s unfinished works at the Chinati
Foundation. The main views from the apertures are of Judd’s unfinished works, but the surrounding desert landscape can also be seen.
The vertical apertures also allow a good bit of light into the space. Being in the desert, it is important to not have too much direct sun-
light coming into the spaces, so the apertures are mainly located on the north side of the intervention so the light allowed in is not the
harsh light from the south and the west. The combination of light and views helped bring this intervention to life.

VerticalMoments
Grand Isle, Louisiana is an interesting place full of history and unique qualities. It was once a place rich with agriculture but
now there is only remnants of what used to be. Grand Isle was home to several plantations that grew sugarcane and cotton all across
what is now the marsh areas of the island. After the plantations, individual farms grew cucumbers and cauliflower and there main cash
crops. The island was full of growth where the soil was rich but over time it has lost most of it nutrient value needed to produce crops
due to salt inundation. Grand Isle is in need of these fresh vegetation again because there is not any available on the island.
Through the use of vertical farming, fresh vegetation can be brought back to the residents of the unique barrier island. Vertical
greenhouse will allow the residents to grow more vegetation in a smaller area through the use of aquaponics. Since the soil does not
contain enough nutrients to grow healthy crops, aquaponics is used to bring nutrients to the plants and the plants clean the fish tanks
the fish are kept in. The vertical greenhouses will be located across the island on arpent like sites that resemble the way the island
was divided up after the plantations stopped producing crops. Having several greenhouses across the island will allow every resident
to have easy access the vertical gardens without having to travel far. There will be a place where the permanent residents, or born on
islanders, of the island can come together and tend to the gardens and have fresh vegetation. Not only will these structures allow resi-
dents to grow crops within smaller areas to sustain a diminishing population, this set of community oriented activity spaces also provide
strategic views to the island’s history.

17. RevivingtheCanal
This urban planning project is located on Constitution Ave. in Washington, DC. In 1791, Pierre Charles L’Enfant drew the map
that the city’s layout is based. In this map, there is a canal that goes down what is currently Constitution Ave. This canal was used for
years, but was eventually filled in and turned into a street. The main driving force behind this urban planning project was to bring back
the canal in a way that will keep people on Constitution Ave. instead of just visiting the museums and leaving because there is nowhere
to sit, relax, or eat. The street also acts as a harsh diver between the museums and the federal buildings. Not only were the water
features added on the museum side, but the concrete planters that acted like barriers were removed from the federal side. Each water
feature is unique to the block it is on and offers different experiences. The sidewalk is widened and one lane of the street is blocked off
to accommodate food trucks and to slow the traffic down. The canal was a key feature in the city’s past and these water features will
bring people back to the area and allow them to stay and enjoy there time as they travel from museum to museum and visit the city.

ReconcilingthePast
The project requirements for the project was to design a restaurant and training facility that works with the local at risk and
under privileged youths and adults at the foot of Canal Street in New Orleans. The concept comes from the restaurant, Café Reconcile,
which helps teach and train the young adults in the food service industry to help them be able to get jobs in the future. Along with the
restaurant, the program includes a day-care for the employee’s children, training areas, offices, classrooms, a maritime museum and a
dock for the ferry boat.
From the site research, a great deal of the site’s history was discovered and incorporated in the design of the project. Spanish
Plaza used to be Eads Plaza, named after the man that dredged the Mississippi River to help restore the shipping industry that was
decreasing due to the fact that large ships could not access the river because of the sediment buildup. Eads Plaza was unique in the
fact that it was one of the few location in New Orleans where one could see the Mississippi River since most of the river was overrun
with warehouses. The wall that is still standing is the shell of the old ferry terminal that was built in the 1930s. This wall has survived
through nearly a hundred years as the surround site was changing. Instead of demolishing the wall, it becomes an important part of
the design. The wall acts as a divider of public and private, much like it did in the past. The different programs wrap around the mas-
sive wall to bring it down to a more human scale, while also making it more welcoming to the people that just want to pass through.
The green roof also provides a place for people to go and relax and enjoy the Mississippi River, away from the busy city below.

The objective was to design a gallery space for the unique watercolor sketches of the architect, Steven Holl. It is located in the warehouse district
adjacent to the Highline. Since the museum is dedicated to Steven Holl, his design concepts were used to design a gallery space that pays tribute to his unique
design style. Lighting and circulation were the two main factors of the design that were brought together in the exterior stairs that make up the southern face of
the gallery. The stairs provide access to all the public levels while also allowing as much natural light possible into the galleries.
Steven Holl’s watercolor sketches are rarely larger then 5x7 because they are all done is a small sketchbook. Because of this, the drawings could not
simply be displayed on the wall. They are displayed on partitions that are no taller then a handrail, allowing the viewer to look down on them one at a time, privid-
ing a more intament feel in the gallery. The partitions are set up in a way that provides a more organic circulation through each gallery, enjoying the unique water-
color sketches. The museum provides a unique experience in a unqiue location off of the Highline, where one can enjoy the views of the city and the architecture.
