This document discusses right-sizing disaster recovery capabilities for organizations. It recommends determining an organization's current disaster recovery capabilities, getting business buy-in to establish appropriate priorities, and separating wants from needs. The document outlines a three-phase process for disaster recovery scoping: 1) assess current IT capabilities, 2) establish and validate business wants, and 3) align IT capabilities with business needs. It provides tips for getting business buy-in and measuring the costs and impacts of downtime to help organizations determine appropriate recovery objectives.
Over the past five years, companies of all sizes have been under increased pressure to improve IT efficiency and effectiveness.
IDC customer-based studies show that each year, the average midsize company experiences 15–18 business hours of network, system, or application downtime. Causes of downtime vary, but aging systems can have components or software that fail, while network connections and power grids can fail at any time because of external causes (e.g., weather, construction work, or natural disaster). Outages occurring during business hours result in revenue loss, as orders are dropped, customers move on, and employees cannot access critical applications. IDC research found that revenue losses per hour averaged $75,000. However, the adoption of best practices has allowed midsize companies to reduce downtime significantly in recent years. Solutions that improve system management, protect data assets from loss and unauthorized access, strengthen network security, and ensure availability directly reduce these losses at customer sites.
The allure of incredibly powerful, easy-to-use handheld devices, constant global connectivity, and an app for everything have given rise to a stunning consumer-driven transformation of the IT landscape.

The termination of extended support for Windows XP SP3, which will happen on April 8, 2014, is looming large for many enterprise organizations, and this deadline has motivated many customers to accelerate their migration activities. However, for some segments of the industry, significantly less effort is being applied to formal migration initiatives, and Windows XP continues to be perceived as a solution that works sufficiently for existing needs, whether it is supported or not.
Finding the value in byod capgemini consulting - digital transformationRick Bouter
This document discusses the benefits of a Bring Your Own Device (BYOD) program for employees and businesses. While BYOD was initially thought to primarily save costs by reducing hardware and software expenses, the document argues the main benefits are improved employee satisfaction, productivity and mobility. BYOD allows employees to use their personal devices for work, increasing flexibility and satisfaction. It also enables increased productivity through greater mobility and availability of employees outside traditional working hours. While security and support costs can reduce savings, the employee and business benefits of BYOD are greater than just cost reduction. The document provides recommendations for developing an effective BYOD strategy including defining the program scope, establishing security policies, selecting appropriate solutions, and implementing support structures.
The document summarizes a study conducted by IDC on the return on investment of deploying Windows Mobile solutions in large enterprises. Some key findings:
- The average payback period was 12 months and the average 3-year ROI was 309%.
- Annual benefits per 100 users averaged $888,536, while costs averaged $615,922 over 3 years.
- Benefits came from increased user productivity, reduced IT costs, improved business operations, and increased IT staff productivity.
- Two case studies showed improved sales and customer relationship management at a brewing company and more efficient field services at a property management company through the use of Windows Mobile solutions.
Bring Your Own Device It’s all about Employee Satisfaction and Productivity, not Costs!
BYOD is becoming more popular globally. For instance, a survey indicated that about 28% of the global workforce in 2011 used personal devices for official purposes. This growth of BYOD is creating doubts in the minds of CIOs. Most focus on BYOD has primarily been from a cost savings perspective, however, our analysis indicates there are more important reasons for CIOs to consider.

Climate Impact of Software Testing at Nordic Testing DaysKari Kakkonen
My slides at Nordic Testing Days 6.6.2024
Climate impact / sustainability of software testing discussed on the talk. ICT and testing must carry their part of global responsibility to help with the climat warming. We can minimize the carbon footprint but we can also have a carbon handprint, a positive impact on the climate. Quality characteristics can be added with sustainability, and then measured continuously. Test environments can be used less, and in smaller scale and on demand. Test techniques can be used in optimizing or minimizing number of tests. Test automation can be used to speed up testing.

Observability Concepts EVERY Developer Should Know -- DeveloperWeek Europe.pdfPaige Cruz
Monitoring and observability aren’t traditionally found in software curriculums and many of us cobble this knowledge together from whatever vendor or ecosystem we were first introduced to and whatever is a part of your current company’s observability stack.
While the dev and ops silo continues to crumble….many organizations still relegate monitoring & observability as the purview of ops, infra and SRE teams. This is a mistake - achieving a highly observable system requires collaboration up and down the stack.
I, a former op, would like to extend an invitation to all application developers to join the observability party will share these foundational concepts to build on:
Removing Uninteresting Bytes in Software FuzzingAftab Hussain
Imagine a world where software fuzzing, the process of mutating bytes in test seeds to uncover hidden and erroneous program behaviors, becomes faster and more effective. A lot depends on the initial seeds, which can significantly dictate the trajectory of a fuzzing campaign, particularly in terms of how long it takes to uncover interesting behaviour in your code. We introduce DIAR, a technique designed to speedup fuzzing campaigns by pinpointing and eliminating those uninteresting bytes in the seeds. Picture this: instead of wasting valuable resources on meaningless mutations in large, bloated seeds, DIAR removes the unnecessary bytes, streamlining the entire process.
In this work, we equipped AFL, a popular fuzzer, with DIAR and examined two critical Linux libraries -- Libxml's xmllint, a tool for parsing xml documents, and Binutil's readelf, an essential debugging and security analysis command-line tool used to display detailed information about ELF (Executable and Linkable Format). Our preliminary results show that AFL+DIAR does not only discover new paths more quickly but also achieves higher coverage overall. This work thus showcases how starting with lean and optimized seeds can lead to faster, more comprehensive fuzzing campaigns -- and DIAR helps you find such seeds.

A well-managed environment consistently outperforms an inconsistent or poorly
managed environment, and a well-managed environment will result in better uptime,
lower cost of management, and
fewer help desk calls. Fewer
problems lead to happier — and
more productive — end users. IDC
research finds that companies
investing in tools that allow a PC
environment to be better managed
and kept more secure and well
prepared for a recovery — should it
become necessary — have lower
operational costs and can
experience a significant return on
investment (ROI) associated with
their management tools.
Such is the case when using the
Microsoft Desktop Optimization Pack
(MDOP), a primarily client-side
management suite that offers six discrete solutions to help personalize the user
experience, simplify application deployment, and improve application compatibility
with the Windows operating system. In addition, MDOP includes products that help
manage, monitor, and deploy key Windows features such as BitLocker and Group
Policy. Using MDOP shifts desktop repair from reactive to proactive, saving time and
removing challenges associated with troubleshooting and repairing system failures.
IDC found that a PC that uses all six MDOP solutions can realize annual IT
productivity savings as high as $194 per year per managed PC, or a 36% reduction in
annual cost, compared with a PC that is not using the MDOP suite. In addition, end
users see a productivity gain, with a cost savings associated with improved user
productivity calculated at an additional $290 per PC per year. Together with savings
realized by the elimination of third-party software, hardware, and additional software
licensing costs, operational cost savings can reach a combined total of up to $508 per
PC per year.
